Yes—MacBook Pro models introduced in 2016 or later can charge through USB-C, provided the power adapter or display supports USB Power Delivery (USB PD). The right wattage depends on your Mac’s size and generation; a lower-wattage compatible source may still charge it, but more slowly. “USB” here means USB-C charging, not any port or charger with USB in its name.
What you need for USB-C charging
Apple says a Mac laptop that charges over USB-C can use a USB-C power adapter or display that supports USB Power Delivery. The connector’s shape alone does not show whether a charger supports USB PD or supplies enough power. Apple also advises that third-party adapters and displays comply with applicable regional and international regulations and safety standards. - Mac: A MacBook Pro introduced in 2016 or later supports USB-C charging.
- Power source: Use a USB-C adapter or display with USB PD.
- Wattage: Check the recommendation for your exact model. Apple recommends at least the model’s listed minimum for the best charging experience.
- Cable: Use a suitable USB-C charge cable, or a USB-C-to-MagSafe 3 cable if charging through MagSafe 3 on a compatible Mac.
Which adapter wattage does your MacBook Pro need?
Apple’s adapter guidance groups recommendations by screen size and introduction year. These are model categories, so confirm your Mac’s exact configuration rather than treating one wattage as universal.

Apple’s current MacBook Pro guide describes 70W and 96W adapters for 14-inch models and a 140W adapter for 16-inch models. The 96W adapter is listed for fast charging compatible 14-inch models, while the 140W adapter is listed for fast charging compatible 16-inch models. Not every adapter associated with a model line provides the same fast-charge capability.

To check an adapter’s wattage, read its certification label. You can also hold Option while choosing Apple menu > System Information, select Power, and look under AC Charger Information. Apple’s adapter guidance gives these steps.
USB-C, MagSafe 3, and charging from a display
USB-C port
On supported MacBook Pro models, connect a USB-C charge cable from the adapter to a USB-C or Thunderbolt port. Apple notes that the USB-C charge cable is sold separately in its MacBook Pro guide.

MagSafe 3
If your Mac has MagSafe 3, you can connect a USB-C adapter to the MagSafe port with a USB-C-to-MagSafe 3 cable. USB-C and MagSafe are alternative charging routes; the Mac charges through only one port at a time and uses the source providing the most power. Connecting a second source does not combine their output or increase charging speed. See Apple’s Mac charging instructions.

A compatible display can charge a MacBook Pro if it supplies power over USB-C or Thunderbolt. Check the display’s delivered wattage against the recommendation for your Mac; the connector type by itself does not establish how much power the display provides.

Will a lower-wattage USB-C charger work?
It may. Apple says USB-C-charging Macs can charge from a compatible adapter or display with output above or below the recommended rating, but recommends at least the listed minimum for the best charging experience. A lower-output source can charge more slowly and may prompt the Mac to show “Slow Charger.” Apple advises using a solution that delivers more power to charge more quickly. When does MacBook Pro fast charging work?
Fast charging is limited to particular MacBook Pro models and Apple-listed adapter-and-cable combinations. Apple says compatible configurations can reach about 50 percent charge in around 30 minutes, but this is not a guaranteed charge time for every Mac. Its fast-charge guidance includes the supported combinations and testing details.

- 16-inch models introduced in 2021 or later: Apple lists a 140W adapter with MagSafe 3.
- 16-inch models introduced November 2023 or later: Apple also lists a 140W adapter with a 240W USB-C charge cable.
Apple cautions that charging time varies with settings and environmental factors, and actual results vary. Check the fast-charge page for your model’s exact combination rather than assuming that a higher-wattage adapter or any USB-C cable will provide fast charging.
Why might charging pause or seem slow?
A slow-charger alert may mean the source is supplying less power than the Mac needs for the best experience. An apparent pause does not necessarily mean the adapter is faulty: Apple says “Charging On Hold” can relate to Optimized Battery Charging, and a charge limit can stop charging below 100 percent. Check the Mac’s battery settings and the adapter’s output before replacing a charger. Apple describes these cases in its charging guidance.
