Sometimes, but not always, and the answer depends on what is playing the disc. On a Mac, Apple’s Mac DVD Player can ask you to change the drive’s region when you insert a disc coded for a different one, but the drive only allows five region settings, counting the original, and the fifth one is permanent. Many standalone DVD players cannot be changed at all. Some Sony players, for example, are documented as unable to override their region code.

What a region code does

DVD region coding assigns each disc and each player a region number. A player is set to the region where it is sold, and it is designed to play only discs carrying a matching code. Sony describes its players this way and states that a player will not play a disc coded for another region. Apple states the same requirement for computers: the DVD and the Mac’s drive region must match for playback.

The commonly used region numbers are:

  • Region 1: the United States, Canada and U.S. territories.
  • Region 2: Europe, Japan, the Middle East and South Africa.
  • Region 3: Southeast Asia and East Asia, including Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea.
  • Region 4: Latin America, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific islands.
  • Region 5: Russia, most of Africa, the Indian subcontinent and parts of Central Asia.
  • Region 6: China.
  • Region 0 or “All”: discs not restricted to a region. Sony says its covered players support these discs, so check your player’s documentation to confirm.

Region is only one of two playback checks. The second is video format. NTSC and PAL are different television standards, and a player must support the format on the disc as well as its region. Sony’s U.S. support article says its covered players support Region 1 and NTSC only, and do not support PAL or SECAM. That is a statement about those specific products, not about DVD players in general.

Can you change the region on a Mac?

Yes, within a strict limit. Apple’s Mac DVD Player instructions say you can set the region code for your DVD drive only five times, including the original setting. After the fifth setting, the drive stays locked to that region.

Also includes RCA AV output for older TVs and a coaxial digital audio output for connection to a multi-channel home audio system (coaxial cable not included).

The process, as Apple describes it, works like this:

  1. Insert a DVD coded for a region different from your drive’s current setting.
  2. When Mac DVD Player prompts you to change the drive’s region, accept the prompt.
  3. Play the disc. Each accepted change uses up one of the five settings.

Treat the change as a one-way decision. Because the limit includes the original factory setting, the drive may have fewer changes left than you expect, and a disc you insert later could play only if its region matches the last setting. Apple’s instructions do not describe a way to reset the count.

External DVD drives

An external USB drive connected to a Mac is not automatically region-free. Transcend, a drive maker, states in its external DVD FAQ that region code changes are not supported on macOS 10.14 and later, in the context it describes. Whether the same limit applies to your model, and whether its firmware allows region changes at all, should be confirmed with the manufacturer before you buy or rely on one.

Standalone DVD players

Standalone players vary more than computer drives. Sony’s U.S. support article states that its covered players cannot be overridden: “There is no way to override the region code or make the player support a different video format.” That statement applies to the products listed in that article, and it should not be taken to describe every brand or model.

The table below shows the checks to make before relying on a player for a particular disc.

How to decide before you buy or play

Work through these checks in order:

  • Find the disc’s region code on its packaging, and note whether it says Region 0 or All.
  • Find the disc’s video format. A PAL disc needs a player that supports PAL.
  • Identify the exact device model, not just the brand, and read its region and video-format specifications.
  • If the device is a Mac drive, check whether Mac DVD Player has already changed the region, because each change counts against the five-setting limit.
  • If the device is an external drive, confirm the macOS version it runs on and the maker’s region policy.

Region-free or multi-region players are a real product category, but this article did not verify any particular model, seller or listing. If you are shopping for one, the model’s own specifications are the only reliable check on whether it plays your discs.

Limits of what is established

The clearest evidence comes from Apple and Sony, and both apply only to the products they describe. The five-setting limit is an Apple rule for Mac DVD Player and Mac drives, and it has not been shown to apply to every drive or operating system. Sony’s statement covers only the products named in its support article. Transcend’s FAQ covers its own external drives. Outside those cases, assume a region lock is in place and check before you rely on a player.
