You can find ways to install Windows 11 on a PC that fails its hardware checks, but bypassing TPM 2.0 does not make the PC eligible or the installation Microsoft-supported. First check whether TPM is present but disabled; if the computer still fails Windows 11’s requirements, weigh the risks against Microsoft’s supported alternatives before proceeding.
Check whether TPM is really the problem
Windows 11 lists TPM 2.0 among its minimum system requirements. On a consumer Windows 10 PC, Microsoft points users to PC Health Check or Windows Update to check eligibility. Run one of those checks and note the exact requirement reported as failing: a TPM warning does not establish that TPM is the only issue.
If TPM is the reported problem, consult the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s documentation. The system may have a supported firmware setting to enable TPM, or the manufacturer may specify whether the board supports a compatible TPM module. Compatibility depends on the particular system and board, so do not assume a generic module will work.
If the PC meets the requirements, use the supported upgrade
Once the eligibility check confirms that the PC meets Windows 11’s minimum requirements, follow Microsoft’s supported upgrade guidance and back up important files first. Microsoft says the Windows 11 upgrade is free for eligible devices. Using Microsoft installation media from a USB drive is another documented installation or upgrade method; it does not make hardware that fails the requirements eligible.

What bypassing the requirement means
Microsoft says installing Windows 11 on a device that does not meet minimum system requirements is not recommended. An installation on ineligible hardware is unsupported: compatibility problems may occur, Microsoft support is not available for the device, and updates—including security updates—are not guaranteed. Do not treat a successful installation, if one occurs, as proof that the PC is supported or will keep receiving updates.
Microsoft also warns that an unsupported installation may display a watermark. These are meaningful trade-offs if the computer is used for important work or connected to the internet. A USB installer is a way to install or upgrade Windows, not an endorsement or a workaround for the eligibility rules.

If unsupported Windows 11 is already installed and causes problems
Microsoft’s unsupported-device guidance recommends returning to Windows 10 if problems arise. For a limited time after an upgrade, use Settings > System > Recovery > Go back. Microsoft says this option is available for 10 days after upgrading; after that period, the files needed for the rollback are removed.
Alternatives for a PC that cannot meet Windows 11 requirements
- Consumer Extended Security Updates: Microsoft recommends this program for eligible Windows 10 users who need to continue using their device. Enrollment and coverage depend on the program’s applicable conditions.
- Replace the computer: Microsoft also recommends replacing a device that cannot meet Windows 11 requirements with one that can.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Consider the computer’s remaining useful life and replacement cost alongside whether it qualifies for Consumer Extended Security Updates; the best choice depends on your device and circumstances.
