Possibly as an experimental project, but the available sources do not establish a tested, reproducible LEGO maglev vehicle. Arduino projects describe magnetic-levitation concepts, and separate tutorials show Arduino control of conventional LEGO trains. Those are useful starting points, not a validated set of instructions for combining the two.
What an Arduino-controlled LEGO maglev vehicle would need to do
A working model would have to address three distinct jobs: keeping the vehicle stably suspended, moving it along a guideway, and controlling the system safely. LEGO bricks could potentially form a vehicle body or track structure, but that is an adaptation idea—not a documented LEGO maglev application.
- Levitation: magnets and electromagnetic forces would need to support and stabilize the vehicle.
- Propulsion: a separate arrangement would need to move it along the track.
- Control: a microcontroller and suitable sensors and drivers would need to monitor and actuate the system.
The sources below address pieces of this challenge independently. None supplies a complete, verified design that brings them together.

What the Arduino maglev projects actually document
Arduino Project Hub: a preliminary concept
The 2018 Arduino MagLev Train project lists an Arduino Leonardo, a Hall-effect sensor, and a Grove electromagnet. It also discusses permanent magnets for a proposed track arrangement. Crucially, the project describes itself as still being in the “theory and thinking phase.” Treat its parts and arrangement as ideas, not as a tested bill of materials or build recipe.

A separate Arduino model maglev
An Arduino Blog article from 2013 describes a remote-controlled model maglev with electromagnetic propulsion built by the Antipodes girls robotics team in Pacifica, California. It identifies an Arduino UNO and Wireless Protoshield and reports that the project received Maker Faire’s Editor’s Choice blue ribbon. The account shows Arduino in a model-maglev context, but does not document a LEGO vehicle or provide evidence that LEGO construction was part of the design.
What LEGO and Arduino train tutorials establish
Arduino-controlled LEGO trains are documented, but the cited examples use conventional motorized trains rather than levitation.

| Source | What it covers | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Arduino Lego Trains: “Tutorial: Getting Started” (2015) | Arduino control of classic 9V or 12V LEGO trains. Listed requirements include an Arduino, L298N motor controller, 12V DC supply, Technic 9V cable, and compatible train set. | Magnetic levitation; the tutorial explicitly excludes Power Functions and RC trains. |
| Arduino Project Hub: “Arduino and LEGO Power Functions” (2016) | Arduino control of a LEGO Power Functions train; the listed board is an Arduino Uno Rev3. | A levitating LEGO vehicle or maglev track. |
The O’Reilly contents for Arduino and LEGO Projects include a chapter on controlling LEGO trains with Arduino and an appendix of parts. The available contents do not show coverage of magnetic levitation, so it is background for train control rather than a verified maglev manual.
Are LEGO train sets maglev kits?
No. LEGO’s official instructions list the 211-piece LEGOLAND Train, set 40166 (2016), and the 284-piece High-Speed Train, set 40518 (2022). They are train products, not identified maglev kits. Their bricks might be adapted for a project’s body or guideway, but that would be the builder’s own design rather than a manufacturer-supported application.

Which parts are plausible starting points?
The preliminary Arduino maglev concept names a Leonardo, Hall-effect sensor, and electromagnet, and discusses permanent magnets. A separate Arduino model maglev account names an UNO. These are candidate components for exploration, not a validated LEGO vehicle parts list.
- Arduino board: An Uno is a reasonable board to investigate because it appears in the model-maglev account and in adjacent LEGO train-control examples. The right board depends on the final circuit, sensor interface, and power design.
- Hall-effect sensor: It is named in the preliminary maglev concept, but that source does not validate its placement, control logic, or compatibility with a LEGO build.
- Electromagnet and permanent magnets: Both appear in the proposed maglev approach. Their specific arrangement and performance are not established by the cited concept.
- LEGO construction: Bricks or train pieces could be considered for the body or guideway, but neither cited LEGO train set is a maglev kit.
Do not infer that an Arduino Uno, sensor, or magnet module alone will make a vehicle levitate. A viable design must solve the complete mechanical, magnetic, electrical, and control problem.

What is still missing for a reproducible build
The available accounts do not establish a complete LEGO maglev design with validated instructions and a tested bill of materials. In particular, they do not provide a verified combined build covering the levitation arrangement, LEGO-compatible vehicle and guideway, propulsion, sensor feedback, circuit and power requirements, or reliable operating procedure.
That distinction matters: conventional LEGO train-control instructions can help explain motor control, while Arduino maglev concepts can suggest components. Neither source type proves that the systems can be combined into a stable, working LEGO maglev vehicle. Until a complete design is documented and tested, this topic is best treated as an experimental build concept—not a ready-to-follow project.
