A belt file is a narrow abrasive-belt tool for focused sanding, grinding, filing, and deburring, including work in tight spaces. But the available information does not document a particular belt file built from an old mixer and salvaged parts. Without the mixer model, drive arrangement, belt dimensions, or construction details, it is not possible to give a reliable parts list or build instructions. The practical starting point is to identify the actual machine and verify its belt and safe operation before choosing consumables or using it.
What a belt file does
A belt file uses a narrow moving abrasive belt to reach corners, edges, and other confined areas that are awkward for a wider sander. Commercial models vary in their intended materials and tasks: Einhell describes its TC-BF 500 E for grinding, filing, and deburring metal and wood, while FEIN describes the BF 10-280 E for corners and edges in stainless-steel machining. Those examples explain the tool category; they do not establish what an improvised mixer build can do.
What is—and is not—known about the old-mixer build
The title suggests a DIY project, but no project source or parts list establishes the mixer model, motor, transmission, salvaged components, fabrication method, belt tracking or tensioning arrangement, finished belt size, guards, or measured performance. A commercial belt-file manual or product page cannot fill in those details. In particular, neither a belt size listed for a commercial tool nor its safety instructions confirm that the same belt or setup suits an unidentified build.

Commercial belt files illustrate why dimensions matter
These manufacturer specifications describe two different commercial tools and intended uses. They are not a head-to-head test, and their figures are not independent test results.

Einhell lists a matching belt-set accessory for its TC-BF 500 E, but its 13 × 457 mm specification does not establish compatibility with a homemade tool. Match a belt to the machine’s measured dimensions and intended use rather than assuming that a belt for a commercial model will fit. Safety guidance is useful, but not a certification
The Silverline 247820 manual gives precautions for that named commercial tool. They are sensible hazards to consider around an abrasive belt, but they do not certify an improvised machine or show that it has equivalent safeguards.

- Unplug the tool before changing a belt or adjusting its file arm.
- Check that the belt is the correct size, centered, and seated; the manual says to rotate it by hand to check seating.
- Secure the workpiece, keep hands away from the moving belt, and wait for the belt to stop before setting the tool down.
- Use eye, respiratory, hearing, and hand protection. The manual also recommends a suitable dust extractor when possible.
- For that Silverline tool, the manual advises starting at the lowest speed and replacing a clogged or worn belt. Its grit examples are 60 (coarse), 80 (medium), 120 (fine), and 240 (extra-fine); these are not tested recommendations for the unidentified build.
The manual says the Silverline 247820 has no user-serviceable parts and directs repair to an authorised service centre. That limitation applies to the Silverline product only; it does not establish whether any mixer-based build is serviceable. Choosing between a documented tool and an unverified build
If the goal is a belt file for a known task, a commercial model offers stated belt dimensions and manufacturer-described capabilities to compare with the work. The Einhell example is documented for metal and wood and lists dust extraction; the FEIN example is aimed at stainless-steel corners and edges and specifies several belt widths. Neither product page establishes which is suitable for every job, and neither is evidence about the mixer project’s performance.
If the goal is to recreate the old-mixer build, first obtain its source or a complete description of the actual machine. Until its drive, belt dimensions, tracking and tensioning, and safeguards are known, recommending a motor, pulley, belt, or construction method would be guesswork.
