Yes. If Find My was enabled before the theft, you can mark your iPhone as lost to lock it remotely. You can also contact your wireless carrier to report the theft and ask it to disable your account. These steps are different: Apple’s guidance does not promise that every carrier can remotely block the handset itself.
What “blocking” a stolen iPhone means
Apple’s main remote protection is Lost Mode in Find My. It locks the iPhone with its passcode, lets you display a contact message, and suspends Apple Pay cards and passes. It is not the same as asking a carrier to disable your wireless account or block a handset. Apple’s instructions advise contacting your carrier about the account but do not describe a universal carrier process for blocking a phone by its IMEI.
Find My must have been enabled before the iPhone was stolen. If it was off, Apple says the device will not appear in Find My, so you cannot mark it as lost or erase it remotely there. See Apple’s instructions for a stolen iPhone or iPad.

What to do first
- Mark the iPhone as lost. Use Find My on another Apple device, or go to iCloud.com/find. Apple says you do not need a verification code to sign in there for this action, which can help if the stolen iPhone was your trusted device. Select the iPhone and choose the option to mark it as lost. Add a contact message if you want someone who finds it to reach you. If the phone is offline, the request remains pending; Lost Mode takes effect when it is turned on and connects to Wi-Fi or a mobile network.
- Report the theft to your wireless carrier. Ask the carrier to disable your account or service for the missing phone. Ask what handset-blocking options it offers, but do not assume that disabling service also blocks the device itself.
- Check your Apple Account. From another trusted device or at account.apple.com, review your account details, devices, contact information, and recovery methods. If you see unfamiliar changes, change your Apple Account password.
- Decide whether to erase the iPhone. Remote erase cannot be undone. Consider it if recovery seems unlikely or protecting the data takes priority. Keep the iPhone in Find My after erasing it; removing it can remove Activation Lock and make resale easier.
- Check any Theft and Loss coverage. If you have AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, follow Apple’s claim process. Keep the iPhone in Find My and linked to your Apple Account until the claim is approved. Coverage is not available in every region.

For most people, Lost Mode is the first step because it locks the phone while leaving the recovery option open. Erase remotely when protecting the data outweighs the possibility of recovery.

How Activation Lock helps
Activation Lock is tied to Find My. Apple says the Apple Account password is required to turn off Find My, erase, or reactivate a protected device. Remote erasure does not by itself remove Activation Lock; removing the iPhone from Find My does. Details are in Apple’s Activation Lock guidance.
What Stolen Device Protection can—and cannot—do
Stolen Device Protection adds safeguards for certain sensitive actions, such as requiring Face ID or Touch ID, and can impose a delay for some security changes. It may also require biometrics to turn off Lost Mode. It requires iOS 17.3 or later and must be enabled before the iPhone is lost or stolen; it cannot be switched on afterward to secure a missing phone.
