No official statement from Soulframe Liang, and no verified playthrough, confirms that Phantom Blade Zero can be completed with a wooden sword. The claim appears in a summary on an unofficial fan database, which attributes it to the director without linking to an original source. What is documented is Liang’s stated approach to kung fu combat, the weapon and difficulty systems described in the official PlayStation Blog, and enough context to judge how seriously the claim should be taken.

Where the wooden-sword claim comes from

The claim traces to a summary on Phantom Blade Zero DB, an unofficial fan guide to weapon upgrades, materials and reforging that was last verified on September 24, 2026. The summary refers to a director statement that a player could finish the game with a wooden sword, but it does not provide the original statement. Neither the PlayStation Blog posts nor Liang’s published interviews contain this wording.

The “childhood sword” detail and the idea that the game is “theoretically” beatable are framing that we could not trace to a primary statement. The table below separates what is documented from what is not.

What Liang has said about kung fu combat

The wooden-sword story makes more sense against the design philosophy Liang has described on the record. Liang is the founder and CEO of S-Game, and his statements below are attributed to that role.

Kungfupunk and the cinematic reference point

In a May 24, 2023 PlayStation Blog post, Liang described Phantom Blade Zero as a spiritual rebirth of the earlier Rainblood game. The story places protagonist Soul in the Phantom World, where Chinese kung fu, machinery reminiscent of steampunk, occult arts and other influences meet. He named the overall look: “We call this overall art direction ‘Kungfupunk’.”

In a December 2025 interview with RPG Site, Liang defined “kung fu punk” as traditional kung fu and Chinese culture combined with modern fashion elements such as steampunk and cyberpunk. He said the team was trying to establish a new action subgenre, which he called “Kung fu action game” or “Wuxia action games.”

Simplified inputs and handcrafted animation

Liang’s 2023 explanation of combat points to the rapid, elaborate action of 1990s kung fu films as a reference. He said the team drew on its experience simplifying inputs in mobile games, so that a player can execute long move chains with fewer button presses on a controller. He also credited action director Kenji Tanigaki with demonstrating designed moves for the animation team’s reference.

Liang’s view on animation is direct: “Combat moves in Phantom Blade Zero have to be made with handcrafted animation, because motion capturing can’t do it justice.”

Translating sword technique into game rules

A UCG Media interview with Liang, conducted in Chinese, goes further into how martial tradition maps onto game rules. Liang said traditional Chinese sword and blade techniques often blur attack and defense into an exchange of blades, which makes them hard to translate directly into familiar mechanics. He described the studio’s effort to reflect wuxia logic in systems such as blocking, and to give individual weapons movement styles suited to their cultural background. The page we accessed does not show a publication date, so treat its timing as unconfirmed.

Weapons, Phantom Edges and difficulty

The official August 17, 2026 PlayStation Blog post describes a wide combat toolkit. It lists more than 30 main weapons and 25 secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. Players can upgrade weapons, combine them with accessories, and reforge a weapon to recover its upgrade materials. Liang’s description of the setting adds context: “The Wulin, our dark wuxia world, is a place rife with conflict and intrigue.” Side quests may also open story paths.

Difficulty modes

The same post lists three difficulties. Their descriptions are summarized below.

Difficulty Official description Best fit, as described
Wayfarer Story-focused play Players who want to follow the narrative
Hellwalker More advanced and adaptive enemies Players seeking a harder fight
Sixty-Six Days A more punishing challenge Players seeking the greatest difficulty

Weapon variety and difficulty are separate levers. The official post does not say whether any weapon meaningfully lowers the challenge, and it does not address whether the game can be completed with a particular weapon. A wooden sword, if it exists in the game, would be a balancing question that no official source has answered.

Release timing

The official August 17, 2026 post gives an October 29, 2026 release date, with October 28 in the US and select regions. As of October 9, 2026, the game has not launched, so no playthrough from release players is available to test the claim.

What would confirm or rule out the claim

  • A direct quote from Liang, with the interview or post, date and language, that mentions a wooden sword.
  • A developer or publisher statement on difficulty or weapon balance, published through the PlayStation Blog or S-Game’s own channels.
  • A recorded playthrough from after launch that shows the run, with the weapon and difficulty setting visible.
  • Fan databases and guides, which are useful for mechanics but should be checked against official sources before you treat a quote as established.

Until one of these appears, the most accurate reading is that the wooden-sword idea is a secondhand, unverified claim sitting next to a well-documented design philosophy that treats martial technique seriously.
