Sometimes. Whether you can add RAM depends on your laptop’s exact model and configuration: it may have removable memory modules, soldered memory plus an open slot, or only soldered memory that cannot be replaced. Check the manufacturer’s specifications and service guide before buying a module.
How to check whether your laptop can take more RAM
Follow these checks before choosing a memory module. A product-family name such as “IdeaPad,” “Inspiron,” or “Pavilion” is not enough: configurations within the same family can differ.
- Identify the exact laptop. Find its full model name and, where available, product number, machine type, or service tag. Use that identifier on the manufacturer’s support site. ASUS directs owners to check the model’s official technical specifications; HP points users to the matching product support page.
- Open the specifications and service guide. Search for terms such as “memory,” “system memory,” “maximum memory,” “memory module,” “soldered,” “SO-DIMM” or “SODIMM,” and “slots.” HP recommends consulting the product’s Maintenance and Service Guide or Hardware Reference Guide. Lenovo also advises searching the user guide for memory and soldered-memory details.
- Find out what is physically replaceable. Look for wording such as “soldered,” “onboard,” “integrated,” or “non-removable.” Some laptops combine soldered memory with a removable module slot. If the documentation lists a slot, check whether it is free or occupied; adding memory may require replacing an existing module rather than inserting another one.
- Check the limits. Record the maximum memory supported by the laptop and its installed capacity. HP also recommends checking the operating system’s maximum; use the lower applicable limit. The difference between installed and maximum capacity does not by itself tell you what to buy—the number of slots and their configuration matter too.
- Match the module to the laptop. Confirm the supported memory type or generation, form factor, speed or data rate, capacity per slot, and any configuration restrictions. Dell’s general guide identifies SODIMM as a laptop module form factor, but the laptop’s own documentation determines what its system board supports. Do not assume every laptop uses SODIMM or a particular DDR generation.
- Cross-check with a compatibility tool. Crucial offers an Upgrade Selector and System Scanner to help identify possible compatible upgrades. Treat the result as a buying aid, and compare it with the manufacturer’s model-specific limits if the two disagree.
- Choose an amount only after checking the fit and limits. If there is no user-replaceable slot or module, a memory stick is not an option. If the laptop has a supported slot, select a compatible capacity within the documented total and per-slot limits.
What to verify before buying laptop RAM
Collect these details from the specifications or service guide before comparing modules:
- Exact laptop model and configuration.
- Whether memory is soldered, removable, or a combination.
- Number of slots, which are occupied, and whether a module must be replaced.
- Official maximum total capacity and any per-slot limit.
- Supported memory type or generation, form factor, and speed.
- Installed capacity and the operating system’s applicable memory limit.
- A compatibility-tool result checked against the manufacturer’s documentation.
When more than one option is supported, compare the total capacity each would provide, whether it uses one module or a matched kit, and whether existing memory must be removed. A module advertised at a higher speed is not guaranteed to run at that speed: the laptop’s supported speed and configuration govern. Compare current prices and warranties separately, since availability and prices change.

Can Windows or another software tool tell you?
Windows Settings or system-information screens can help you identify how much memory is installed, but installed capacity alone does not establish that the memory is upgradeable or show the manufacturer’s supported maximum. Lenovo says Task Manager can provide slot information, which can be a useful clue; do not treat a reported free slot as proof that a physical, usable slot is present. Cross-check slot and soldered-memory details in the model’s service guide.
What soldered memory means
Memory soldered to the system board cannot be swapped like a removable module. HP Support warns: “In some computers, the memory is soldered to the system board and cannot be upgraded.” That does not rule out an upgrade in every laptop with soldered memory: a model may also have a replaceable slot. Check the complete configuration and service documentation for your exact machine.

- Actual memory speed may vary depending on the system, CPU, motherboard, BIOS settings, and supported memory configuration. DDR4 3200MHz modules may operate at lower speeds such as 2933MHz or 2666MHz when supported by the host system. Please check your device specifications and compatibility before purchase.

If you decide to install the memory yourself
Do not start with a generic teardown guide. Laptop cases, battery designs, and service procedures vary by model. Use the laptop’s own service documentation, and follow its instructions for accessing and handling internal components.

- Shut down the laptop and disconnect external power.
- Follow the model-specific instructions for disabling or disconnecting the internal battery.
- Use electrostatic-discharge precautions and install the module as directed.
- Stop if the module does not align or fit as described, or if it requires excessive force.
If you are not comfortable following those steps, consider a qualified repair service. Do not open the laptop until you have located its model-specific service instructions.

Does adding RAM guarantee a faster laptop?
No universal speed improvement can be promised. Whether more memory helps depends on the laptop and how you use it; the compatibility guidance establishes what the computer can support, not how much a particular workload will improve. First confirm that memory capacity is the constraint you need to address.
