You can change your Windows 11 account picture in Settings, but an animated GIF is not a supported picture for a Microsoft account. Microsoft does not specify whether Windows’ local-account picture chooser rejects a GIF or displays it as a still image, so do not expect it to animate. For a dependable result, choose a static image.
Which Windows account picture are you changing?
The steps and GIF support depend on the account type. A local Windows account picture is set on the PC. A personal Microsoft account picture is managed through your Microsoft account and can appear in apps and devices that use that account. Work or school profile pictures may be controlled by your organization.

Change a local Windows 11 account picture
- Open Settings.
- Select Accounts > Your info.
- Under Adjust your photo, select Choose a file > Browse files, then select the picture you want. If your device has a camera, choose Open camera to take a photo.
- To reuse a recent picture, select one of the pictures shown on the Your info page. Windows remembers the last three pictures used.
Microsoft’s Windows account-picture instructions cover Windows 11 and Windows 10 but do not list supported file formats or explain what happens if you choose a GIF. The documented steps change the picture; they do not establish that an animated GIF will play.
Change a personal Microsoft account picture
Use the picture controls on your Microsoft account dashboard rather than assuming the local Windows chooser updates your online profile. Microsoft Support says: “You can use most static image files on PC, macOS, iOS and Android, but HEIC and animated GIFs are not supported, sorry.” A changed picture may take up to 24 hours to appear everywhere it is used.

If you are preparing a static portrait or landscape photo, Microsoft recommends using an image-editing app to add borders and make the image square so the full picture can display. This is only a crop or framing aid; it does not enable GIF animation.
Change a work or school profile picture
Try the picture controls in your organization’s My Account portal. If there is no edit option, or the change is blocked, your organization may have restricted profile updates. Microsoft notes that administrators can prevent editing personal details; contact your IT or HR team to ask about the policy.

Remove an older local account picture
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:UsersyournameAppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsAccountPictures, replacingyournamewith your Windows account name. - If you cannot see
AppData, turn on View > Show > Hidden items. - Delete the picture file you no longer want.
Windows also lets you switch among the three most recently used pictures from Settings > Accounts > Your info.
