There is no evidence here that Windows Recall is “easily hacked” as a general rule. Microsoft says the opt-in feature stores periodic screen snapshots locally and protects access with Windows Hello, encryption, and other safeguards. Those protections do not make a searchable archive of screen activity risk-free, and a 2026 report raised a concern about a data-transfer path that is not independently established in the sources available. If you do not want Recall saving snapshots, check its setting and turn it off.
What is Recall, and does it record everything?
Recall is an optional feature for eligible Copilot+ PCs. When a user opts in, it periodically takes snapshots when screen content differs from the previous snapshot, then analyzes and indexes them on the PC. Users can browse a timeline or search past material, including text and images, with natural-language queries. Microsoft says Recall does not record continuous video or audio. Recall is not available on every Windows PC. Microsoft Learn lists these minimum requirements: a Copilot+ PC meeting the Secured-core standard, a 40 TOPS NPU, 16 GB of RAM, eight logical processors, and 256 GB of storage capacity. At least 50 GB free is needed to enable Recall; automatic saving pauses when free space falls below 25 GB. These are device and storage requirements, not measures of security or likelihood of compromise.
Can Windows Recall be hacked?
The evidence supports a more careful answer than the headline: Recall collects sensitive screen context, so it merits scrutiny, but the cited material does not establish that it is generally easy to hack. A Windows Central report published April 20, 2026, described researcher Alexander Hagenah’s concerns about a Recall data-transfer path and said Microsoft did not regard the issue as a bug. The report is a concern worth noting, not proof of a broadly exploitable vulnerability; the available sources do not establish a primary disclosure, technical reproduction, or Microsoft response that would settle the claim.

Microsoft documents safeguards rather than a guarantee against every attack. It says snapshots and the associated vector database are encrypted, with keys protected through the TPM and a Virtualization-based Security (VBS) Enclave. Access requires Windows Hello authentication, and Microsoft describes just-in-time decryption. Its security architecture is explained in the Windows Experience Blog’s September 27, 2024 update; current user and management controls are documented in Microsoft Support and Learn.
Local storage means snapshots are not routinely uploaded to Microsoft for Recall processing, according to Microsoft. It does not mean they could never be exposed: a local archive can still have consequences if a device or authenticated user access is compromised. That is a general security consideration, not a claim that Microsoft has documented a Recall breach. No breach rate or statistic establishing how often Recall is compromised is provided in the cited sources.

What Recall protections do—and do not—cover
Opt-in, authentication, and device security
Microsoft says snapshot saving is off until a user opts in. Check the actual PC rather than assuming it is off: the Recall system-tray icon indicates when saving is active, paused, or filtering, and is absent when saving is off. Microsoft Learn says biometric Windows Hello enrollment is required. Use Windows Hello and keep device encryption or BitLocker enabled as security prerequisites, but do not treat them as proof that every compromised session, malicious program, device attack, or export scenario is prevented.
Sensitive information and app or website filters
Sensitive-information filtering is on by default and helps reduce capture of detected information such as passwords, national ID numbers, and credit-card numbers. It is not a guarantee that such information can never be saved. Users can also exclude apps and supported websites. Website filtering depends on browser support and factors such as which tab is in the foreground; Microsoft warns that portions of a filtered site may still appear, including embedded content or browser history.

Microsoft lists Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Chrome for specified-site and private-browsing filtering. Other Chromium-based browsers version 124 or later may filter private browsing but not specific sites. Microsoft says private-browsing activity in supported browsers is not saved, and DRM-protected content is not stored. These protections apply within their stated scope; they should not be taken to mean other apps or screen-capture tools are covered.
Remote sessions, diagnostics, and export
Microsoft lists supported remote desktop clients whose sessions are filtered. A session in another client may be saved unless that client implements screen-capture protection; check the client’s policy and consider adding an app filter.

Some diagnostic data may be sent depending on Windows privacy settings. Separately, Microsoft warns that sending feedback with screenshots can send Recall data to Microsoft. That user-triggered feedback route is distinct from ordinary Recall snapshot processing.
Microsoft documents snapshot export for the European Economic Area (EEA), with policy controls for managed devices. Exported content may be shared with apps or websites the user trusts, creating a separate copy outside Recall’s local controls. Microsoft says the export code is shown only once during setup and cannot be recovered if lost. Resetting Recall does not remove files already exported or data saved by a third party. How to check or turn off Recall in Windows 11
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots.
- Check whether Save snapshots is on. Switch it off if you do not want new snapshots saved. You can also pause saving from the Recall system-tray control.
- Review filtering options and exclude apps or supported websites where appropriate. Verify that your browser is supported before relying on website exclusions.
- Use the Recall controls to delete existing snapshots and adjust retention and storage limits. Turning off saving is not the same as deleting snapshots already saved.
- If you do not want the feature on the device, remove Recall through Windows optional-feature settings.
On commercially managed devices, Microsoft says Recall is removed and disabled by default. Organizations that allow it can use policy controls for feature availability, saving, storage, filtering, data loss prevention (DLP), and EEA export.
Who should leave Recall off?
If having a searchable history of screen activity would create an unacceptable privacy or security risk, leave snapshot saving off. If you choose to use it, decide based on the device’s actual settings, Windows Hello and encryption status, the apps and browser activity you need excluded, your retention and storage choices, and whether an organization manages the PC. No cited source supports buying security software or a hardware add-on as a specific fix for a Recall vulnerability.
