But these were distinct research projects—not one cheap, accurate, commercially available Wi-Fi device. The best-known Wi-Fi prototype, Wi-Vi, detected moving people by filtering out reflections from stationary surroundings; other headline figures belong to different systems.
What MIT’s Wi-Vi system could detect
Developed by Dina Katabi and graduate student Fadel Adib at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Wi-Vi used low-power Wi-Fi signals to detect movement behind walls or closed doors. MIT described it as a radar-like system: it transmitted radio signals, received their reflections, and processed changes in those reflections to infer movement.
A wall and the objects in a room produce much stronger reflections than a person behind the wall. Wi-Vi addressed this by using two transmitting antennas and one receiver. It arranged transmissions so reflections shared by stationary objects canceled, while reflections that changed because a person moved remained detectable. The system could also estimate the number and relative locations of people in a closed room and recognize simple gestures, according to the MIT report on Wi-Vi and the project paper and materials.
The research paper describes a prototype operating in the 2.4 GHz ISM band on a 20 MHz Wi-Fi channel. Researchers implemented it with USRP software-defined radios (SDRs), not an ordinary off-the-shelf router. The reported results therefore do not establish that a standard home Wi-Fi setup can reproduce Wi-Vi’s sensing capabilities.

Wi-Vi was not the same system as MIT’s other radio experiments
Several MIT projects are sometimes compressed into a single claim about seeing through walls, locating people, and measuring vital signs. Their tasks and results differ:

The WiTrack measurement is described in MIT’s 2013 report; the heart-rate result appears in MIT CSAIL’s 2014 report; and the RF-Pose result is in MIT’s 2018 report. These numbers measure different tasks and should not be read as competing measures of one device’s accuracy.

Can Wi-Fi detect a heartbeat through a wall?
MIT reported a separate wireless vital-sign system that inferred heart rate from tiny movements of the chest. Its 99 percent accuracy figure was reported by MIT CSAIL in 2014; it is not a Wi-Vi specification. The cited account does not establish that this system was a clinically validated or currently marketed medical monitor.
MIT later described exploring passive radio monitoring with Novartis for clinical-trial research. The account characterized the work as a proposed research collaboration, with patient informed consent and medical confidentiality protections stated as conditions. It is not evidence of an approved medical product or of product-level privacy safeguards today. See MIT CSAIL’s account of the collaboration.

What the research does—and does not—mean in practice
MIT and the Wi-Vi paper discussed potential uses including search and rescue, safety applications, gesture interfaces, and gaming. Those are proposed applications, not proof of deployed consumer, rescue, or security products. The paper documents an experimental build using SDR hardware; the cited sources do not establish a turnkey detector, consumer price, or current retail availability.
Radio sensing can raise privacy concerns even without a camera: it may infer someone’s presence, movement, gestures, posture, or health indicators from reflections. For any real-world use, consent and clear governance matter. The cited Novartis account describes consent for its proposed research collaboration, but it does not establish safeguards for other systems or applications.
