Whiskey droplets can form distinctive web-like patterns as they dry—but the reported 90% brand-identification result is a laboratory finding, not proof of a reliable counterfeit-bottle test. The technique is a promising research idea that would need further validation before it could be used for routine authentication.
How whiskey droplets form web-like patterns
In experiments reported by Chemistry World, microlitre droplets were left to evaporate on glass. Neat whiskey dried into a relatively uniform film. When researchers diluted it with water to about 20–30% alcohol content, the residue instead developed web-like structures.
The proposed explanation begins with hydrophobic compounds in the whiskey. Adding water encourages these compounds to gather into micelles. The micelles move toward the droplet’s surface and join into a thin film. As evaporation shrinks the droplet, the film wrinkles and buckles, leaving a pattern. Differences in whiskey composition affect the film’s mechanical properties and, in turn, the motifs it forms.

The team compared patterns from dozens of whiskeys and correctly identified their brands 90% of the time, according to the 2020 report. That is the result of those comparisons; it is not a universal accuracy guarantee, an independently replicated error rate, or a measure of performance on unknown counterfeit samples. The researchers saw a need for more statistical work to understand how flavour chemicals relate to pattern formation.

Why this is not yet a counterfeit-bottle test
Recognizing a brand from prepared samples is different from establishing whether a bottle is genuine. The report presents anti-counterfeiting as a possible future application, not a method shown to work in routine enforcement or deployed by manufacturers or authorities. It does not establish reliable separation of authentic whiskey from counterfeit whiskey.
Practical use would require validation beyond the reported experiment. For example, a method would need to show that results are reproducible across batches and laboratories, and distinguish genuine samples from counterfeit ones under controlled conditions. It would also need a suitable reference library and a preparation procedure that accounts for sample variation. These are requirements for evaluating an operational test, not outcomes established by the reported study.

What the researchers said about wider use
Burak Eral, described as a hydrodynamics and soft-materials researcher at Delft University of Technology, said: “Complete physical understanding of film and crack formation processes in the presence of different congeners may open extension of the finding beyond American whiskey,” as quoted in the Chemistry World report. Stuart Williams called the work “a nice blend between science and art” that attracts attention because whiskey is involved.

The underlying study by A. D. Carrithers and colleagues appeared in ACS Nano in 2020: https://doi.org/10.1021/acsnano.9b08984. Its glass-surface droplet experiment makes microscope slides relevant for laboratory demonstrations, but does not turn glassware into an authentication product for consumers.
