Not yet in people. A hierarchical helical carbon-nanotube (CNT) fiber has shown bone integration and restored movement in rabbit and sheep models, but those preclinical results do not establish that it is safe or effective as a human ACL replacement. The study is a promising materials-engineering result, not a treatment patients can currently rely on.
What the twisted CNT ligament is designed to do
In a study published online on 4 May 2023, Wang and colleagues assembled aligned carbon nanotubes into a hierarchical helical fiber with channels at the nanoscale and microscale. The design is intended to combine mechanical properties needed for a ligament-like scaffold with a structure that can integrate with bone.
The authors describe their work as introducing “an artificial ligament that has the required mechanical properties and can integrate with the host bone and restore movement in animals.” That statement refers to their experimental construct and animal findings; it is not evidence of a human implant’s performance. PubMed’s indexed abstract and record identify the paper as “Hierarchical helical carbon nanotube fibre as a bone-integrating anterior cruciate ligament replacement,” published in Nature Nanotechnology.

What the animal study found
The researchers tested the CNT fiber as an ACL replacement in rabbits and sheep. After an implantation period of 13 weeks, they performed pull-out testing and reported bone integration. They also reported that the animals could run and jump normally. These are findings in the studied animal models, not proof of long-term durability, safety, or restored function in human patients.

The 13-week period is the reported interval before pull-out testing; it should not be read as a human recovery timeline or as evidence of how the implant would perform over years of activity.
How this differs from other CNT ligament research
“Carbon-nanotube ligament” can refer to different experimental designs. The studies below are not head-to-head comparisons, and their results should not be combined as if they tested the same implant.

Does this mean CNT grafts are ready for ACL surgery?
No. The cited studies describe preclinical research. They do not establish human effectiveness, regulatory approval, routine clinical use, or long-term outcomes in people. The hierarchical all-CNT fiber, the CNT-wrapped polyester composite, and the CNT/collagen-coated PET fiber are research constructs—not interchangeable commercial grafts.
