Yes. A trucker who holds the required amateur-radio license can use ham radio as a mobile hobby, but it is not a replacement for CB: the services have different purposes, equipment and operating requirements. CB is commonly associated with truck-to-truck highway communication; amateur radio can add local repeater contacts, position reporting through APRS, and— with suitable HF equipment and conditions—long-distance contacts. None guarantees coverage along an entire route.
How ham radio differs from CB in a truck
CB and amateur radio are separate radio services, not interchangeable settings on the same system. The FCC describes CB as an individual low-power mobile or base-station service in the 27 MHz band, a service used by long-haul truck drivers. Its 2017 order says CB stations typically communicate five to fifteen miles by direct-wave propagation; that is a general description, not a promised range for a particular truck or road. FCC 17-57
Amateur radio, often called ham radio, is a licensed technical hobby. A driver might keep CB for familiar highway and work-related chatter while using a separate amateur setup for radio contacts, experimentation or digital functions. The two systems should not be treated as substitutes, and the amateur setup does not automatically give access to CB channels.
What mobile amateur radio can do on the road
Direct VHF/UHF contacts
Mobile amateur radios commonly operate on bands such as 2 meters and 70 centimeters. These VHF/UHF signals are generally constrained by line of sight, so terrain, buildings, antenna placement and the positions of other stations affect whether a direct contact is possible. A radio being installed in a truck does not itself create long-range or route-wide coverage.

Local and linked repeaters
A repeater receives a signal and retransmits it, which can make contacts possible beyond the range of a direct radio-to-radio path. Some repeaters are linked, allowing a conversation to reach additional areas. But the driver must be within reach of a repeater, and the radio must be configured for it; repeaters are unevenly distributed, with gaps particularly possible on rural routes. A linked network is not evidence of continuous nationwide coverage.
APRS position reporting
APRS is a digital protocol that can send a station’s position to a network and display it on a map. For a mobile operator, that can make a vehicle’s location visible to other users when the setup and network path support it. Position reporting depends on suitable compatible equipment and access to APRS-capable infrastructure; a radio alone does not guarantee that a position report will reach the network.

- MENUS THAT MAKE SENSE. 1,000 MEMORIES. 10 NAMED ZONES. Built for amateur operators who want organized analog control. Use clear English menus and the full keypad for common changes; group home, travel, club, event, simplex, and receive channels as your plan grows.
- SCAN THE ZONES THAT MATTER. Choose which named zones scan together. Temporarily skip a busy channel without changing your saved scan list. Scanning is for conventional analog channels; it does not decode DMR/digital or trunked systems.
- MORE INFORMATION AT A GLANCE. Choose Name + Frequency in the two-channel view. Dual Watch alternates one receiver between the two displayed channels. Turn Dual Watch off and enable Single Watch for a full-screen view of one channel's name, zone, and frequency. Approximate dBm adds signal context.
- START ON THE RADIO. BUILD LARGER PLANS ON A COMPUTER. Make common changes from the keypad. For larger plans, use BTECH CPS or supported CHIRP-next with the separately sold PC03. Firmware updates require BTECH CPS, the PC03, and BTECH's matching instructions. USB-C charges the battery.
- TRI-BAND AMATEUR TRANSMIT. RECEIVE-ONLY LISTENING. Valid amateur authorization is required to transmit on amateur frequencies in the U.S.; use only supported amateur bands within your privileges. Airband AM, NOAA weather, and broadcast FM are receive-only.
HF for longer-distance contacts
HF operation offers a different possibility from local VHF/UHF: radio waves can interact with the ionosphere and support contacts over much greater distances. Results depend on conditions and operating setup, so HF should not be thought of as dependable dispatch or emergency coverage. A 2016 Hackaday overview describes mobile HF antennas shortened for vehicle use, including band-specific “hamsticks.” That is useful context, not a current model comparison or installation evaluation. | Option | What it is suited to | Coverage mechanism | Main considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| CB radio | Truck-to-truck highway communication and work-related chatter | Direct communication in the 27 MHz CB service | Separate service from amateur radio; FCC describes typical direct-wave distances of five to fifteen miles, not a guarantee |
| Mobile VHF/UHF amateur radio | Local voice contacts and repeater use | Direct line-of-sight contacts or access to fixed repeaters; linked repeaters may extend reach | Requires amateur operating privileges and reachable repeaters for repeater contacts; coverage varies by route |
| Mobile APRS | Digital station-position reporting | Compatible equipment sends position through an APRS-capable network | Requires compatible equipment and network access; specific device compatibility is not established here |
| Mobile HF amateur radio | Longer-distance hobby contacts | HF propagation, including ionospheric paths | Band-specific antenna choices, vehicle mounting and electrical capacity need consideration; the cited overview dates to 2016 |
A sensible starting point is to decide whether the goal is local voice contacts, position reporting or HF experimentation. A dual-band FM transceiver is the type of equipment discussed for local repeater work and APRS; HF calls for a different radio and antenna arrangement. These are categories, not recommendations for current models: the 2016 overview does not test or verify products currently on sale.

Installation and road-use considerations
Mobile equipment has to work in a moving vehicle without obstructing the driver or interfering with safe operation. The transceiver needs an appropriate mounting location, and antennas must suit the intended bands and the truck’s mounting options. A shortened mobile HF antenna is a band-specific compromise; antenna fit and installation cannot be inferred from the word “hamstick.” The Hackaday article notes that a truck cab may offer mounting locations and electrical capacity advantages over a smaller passenger vehicle, but those advantages depend on the individual truck and are not an installation assessment.
- Check that the radio and antenna arrangement is compatible with the bands you intend to use.
- Assess mounting, cable routing, antenna clearance and the truck’s electrical capacity for the specific vehicle and equipment.
- For APRS, confirm that the radio, GPS or interface components work together; the general APRS use case does not establish compatibility for a particular accessory.
- Keep operation subordinate to driving. The available sources do not establish comprehensive current rules for operating while driving, state distracted-driving requirements or safe installation practices for a particular truck. Verify applicable federal, state and equipment guidance before operating.
What to expect from coverage
Coverage is a function of the operating mode and what is reachable where the truck is, not simply the radio’s advertised capability. Direct VHF/UHF is limited by the path between stations; repeaters can extend that path where they are available; linked repeaters can connect more areas but leave gaps; APRS needs a working route into its network; and HF can support longer-distance contacts without promising continuous or dependable connectivity. If route-specific contacts matter, check current repeater and APRS availability for the planned corridor rather than assuming a nationwide footprint.
