No tropical fruit has been shown in the evidence reviewed here to treat obesity on its own. Whole fruit can fit into a weight-management eating pattern, especially when it replaces a more energy-dense food, but simply adding fruit to an unchanged diet is not an established weight-loss treatment. Small trials of mango and tamarind did not show significant weight loss; African mango seed extract is a separate supplement with limited evidence and reported side effects.
How whole fruit may fit into weight management
A 2019 systematic review of randomized trials found moderate-certainty evidence that eating whole, fresh fruit can support weight maintenance or modest weight loss over study periods of 3–24 weeks. The review found limited evidence specifically for high fruit intake and weight loss in people with overweight or obesity. It also found that fruit eaten before a meal or instead of a more energy-dense food tended to reduce energy intake. These findings support substitution as a practical approach, not fruit as a stand-alone obesity treatment. Read the systematic review.
A separate 2014 systematic review and meta-analysis included seven studies that met all or most of its criteria. It concluded that the evidence did not support recommending increased fruit and vegetable intake as a weight-loss treatment unless people also reduced intake of other energy sources. In other words, adding fruit without changing the rest of the diet has not been established as a reliable way to lose weight. Read the review and meta-analysis.
What human studies found about mango and tamarind
Trials of particular tropical fruits have not established that they cause meaningful weight loss. Their small samples and short durations also limit how confidently their findings can be applied to people more broadly.

Mango
In a 2014 pilot study, 20 adults with obesity, ages 20–50, consumed 10 g per day of ground, freeze-dried mango pulp for 12 weeks. The study reported no significant changes in body weight or body composition. Its authors reported improvements in blood glucose, but that result does not establish mango as an obesity treatment. Read the mango pilot study.
A separate 2017 study involving 20 adults with obesity used the same reported intake—10 g per day for 12 weeks—and found no impact on obesity-related inflammation, body measurements, or blood lipids. These findings do not support claims that mango supplementation reduces body weight or body fat. Read the inflammation study.

Tamarind
In a randomized trial published in 2020, 40 participants completed six weeks of study. The intervention group was instructed to consume 10 g of tamarind fruit pulp twice daily, or 20 g per day. The authors found no significant benefit versus the control group for body weight, waist measurement, blood lipids, glucose, or blood pressure. The trial therefore does not establish tamarind as a way to reduce weight or belly fat. Read the tamarind trial.

“African mango” refers to Irvingia gabonensis, a different plant from the mango fruit commonly eaten fresh. Supplements made from its seeds should not be treated as equivalent to ordinary mango or whole-fruit foods.

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements describes the human evidence for African mango supplements as limited. Its health-professional fact sheet notes possible modest reductions in weight and waist circumference, while the consumer fact sheet says African mango “might help you lose a very small amount of weight.” The consumer fact sheet also says safety has not been well studied. Reported adverse effects include headache, difficulty sleeping, flatulence, and gas. NIH health-professional fact sheet; NIH consumer fact sheet.
That evidence is not a reason to assume a supplement is proven, risk-free, or interchangeable with products used in a study. The cited sources do not establish a dependable weight-loss effect or a recommended supplement dose.

A practical way to think about tropical fruit
- Choose whole fresh or frozen fruit as food if you enjoy it; the cited studies do not establish mango or tamarind as weight-loss treatments.
- If weight management is your goal, consider whether fruit is replacing a more energy-dense food rather than simply adding calories to your usual eating pattern.
- Do not confuse ordinary mango with African mango seed extract, and do not treat supplement claims as equivalent to evidence about whole fruit.
- For obesity care, discuss appropriate options with a qualified health professional rather than relying on one food or supplement.
