Yes—researchers have developed a waterborne wood coating from compounds extracted from birch and spruce bark. In a laboratory test on spruce, a coating with 90% birch-bark suberinic acids and 10% spruce-bark polyphenols absorbed 100 g/m2 of water after 72 hours, outperforming an alkyd emulsion in that test. The result is promising, but it does not establish outdoor service life, decay protection or a product you can buy.
What the bark-based coating is made from
The coating pairs hydrophobic suberinic acids from birch outer bark with polyphenols extracted from spruce bark. The researchers describe the formulation as fully bio-based and waterborne. It takes inspiration from bark’s role as a natural barrier, but the material is an engineered coating rather than a simple application of bark extract.
Suberinic acids are wax-like, viscous and insoluble in water, which makes them difficult to spread evenly in a water-based formulation. Spruce-bark polyphenols—a complex mixture that includes lignin and tannins—help stabilize the suberinic acids in water as hybrid particles. This lets the suspension be applied to wood. The authors describe the approach in their 2024 study, “Fully bio-based water-resistant wood coatings derived from tree bark”.

The study used solvent exchange to create the dispersion, followed by thermal curing to form the coating. During curing, the polyphenols become embedded in the coating network and act as nanofillers. Adjusting their proportion can change mechanical and other film properties, so the blend is part of the material’s performance—not merely an additive that makes the mixture spread.

This formulation process matters when interpreting claims that the suspension is easy to apply. The paper reports a research formulation and experimental process, not a consumer safety assessment or a validated do-it-yourself recipe. Its ingredients and processing conditions require controls that are not established as suitable for home use.
What the 72-hour water test found
Wang and colleagues reported that a blend containing 90% suberinic acids and 10% polyphenols absorbed 100 g/m2 of water after 72 hours when applied to spruce wood. The paper says this result was better than that of an alkyd emulsion in the same reported exposure test. The figure describes water absorption under that test’s conditions; it is not a standardized certification or a measure of years of outdoor protection.

Water resistance is only one part of timber-coating performance. The study does not establish long-term outdoor weathering, UV resistance, adhesion over service life, fungal or insect protection, or field performance. Those need their own tests. A 2024 review by Kirker and colleagues on natural wood protectants notes more broadly that extractive composition, distribution and efficacy can vary, and that natural durability mechanisms are not fully understood. That review provides context about standardization challenges, not a direct assessment of this specific bark coating: “Critical Review on the Use of Extractives of Naturally Durable Woods as Natural Wood Protectants”.

The available sources describe an experimental formulation, not a marketed finish, and do not identify a verified retail supplier. That means there is no supported basis for recommending a commercial stain, bark extract or other product as equivalent. The findings show a research direction, not a ready-to-buy alternative to conventional timber coatings.

What researchers still need to establish
A practical comparison with other wood coatings would need more than water absorption. Relevant questions include:
- Film performance: How well does the coating adhere, and does it remain intact as the wood moves?
- Curing: What thermal conditions are required, and can those conditions be used consistently at production scale?
- Outdoor durability: How does the coating hold up to UV exposure, rain cycles and other weathering?
- Biological protection: Does it resist fungi or insects, and under which test conditions?
- Consistency and scale: Can bark-derived ingredients be sourced and formulated consistently, and can the process be scaled commercially?
The study addresses the formulation and reports a water-exposure result, but it does not answer all of these questions. Wang and colleagues also write that the European Union produces 23 million metric tonnes of bark per year. That is the figure stated in the 2024 article, which cites an underlying source; it should not be treated as an independently verified current estimate without checking that reference.
