Yes, railway systems can have cybersecurity weaknesses—but a 2015 research disclosure does not show that every train is vulnerable or that researchers remotely caused a crash. Sergey Gordeychik, Alexander Timorin, and Gleb Gritsai of SCADA StrangeLove reported issues in specific train-control, signaling, communications, and network devices. Their findings were published by SecurityWeek on December 29, 2015, and do not establish whether the equipment or configurations remain exposed in 2026.
What the 2015 report found
SecurityWeek reported that the SCADA StrangeLove team examined real-world railway installations and identified security issues in several train-control and interlocking devices, as well as more than 10 transport-network devices. The report did not provide a total count for the train-control or interlocking categories, a prevalence rate across railways, or a complete device-by-device vulnerability inventory.
The researchers’ public work involved operators and organizations including ENISA. The article also said that some research conducted for railway companies was confidential. Their work with operators had lasted three years at the time, according to researcher Sergey Gordeychik; that describes the engagement, not the duration of one test.
The report discussed several connected parts of railway operations:

- Onboard train protection and control: The story described a Siemens SIBAS configuration using a WinAC RTX controller and reported concerns including unauthenticated device control and XML-over-HTTP communications.
- Trackside signaling: Computer-based interlocking (CBI) is intended to prevent conflicting routes. The researchers discussed the potential consequences of unauthorized access, including unsafe switch or route changes, blocked controls, false information, and reliability problems if communications failed.
- Railway communications: The report covered GSM-R links between trains and control centers, including possible disruption, SMS-based device management, and over-the-air management concerns. Researchers said a default PIN was often unchanged in the devices they discussed and raised the possibility that a compromised modem could affect a connected host.
- Transport-network and passenger-facing equipment: The story mentioned devices from multiple vendors, along with passenger information and entertainment systems, intercoms, IP cameras, and wireless access points. Reported concerns included hardcoded keys, remote administration, default credentials, remote-code-execution issues, and USB autorun.
These are categories and examples from the researchers’ 2015 account, not a comparative risk ranking or evidence that every railway uses the same equipment.
How the reported weaknesses could matter
The potential consequences varied with a component’s role and an attacker’s access. Weakness in a passenger-facing or network device does not by itself prove access to train controls. The report described possible routes and impacts, not a demonstrated chain of attack ending in a train crash.

| System role | Access or weakness described in the report | Potential impact discussed |
|---|---|---|
| Train protection and control | Unauthenticated device control and XML-over-HTTP communications in the SIBAS/WinAC RTX example | Potential safety or operational consequences if control were misused; the report did not describe a researcher-caused crash |
| Computer-based interlocking | Possible access through physical access or social engineering | Unsafe route or switch changes, blocked controls, false information, or reduced reliability |
| GSM-R and related devices | Potential communications disruption, weak SMS-based management, over-the-air management concerns, or a compromised modem | Disrupted communications or effects on a connected host |
| Transport-network and passenger-facing devices | Examples included hardcoded keys, default credentials, remote administration, remote-code-execution issues, and USB autorun | Potential service disruption, broader network exposure, or effects on passenger-facing systems |
The report raised safety, service, economic, and reliability concerns. Those were potential impacts, not claims that the researchers caused an incident or proved that a particular railway had suffered one through the cited weaknesses.
What the report does not establish today
The findings are historical. The reviewed reporting does not verify current patch status, whether the named equipment is still deployed, whether the same configurations remain in use, or whether the cited issues can still be exploited in 2026. It should not be treated as a current vulnerability alert or as a comprehensive assessment of railway cybersecurity.

SecurityWeek noted that railway-system software was generally not publicly available and that assessing it required specialist railway-automation knowledge and a testbed. Together with the confidential portions of the work and limited public device-level detail, that means the account is not a reproducible test report or a full vulnerability inventory.

Railways rely on multiple digital systems, and weaknesses in particular components can create risks to safety or operations depending on access and system connections. The 2015 report is evidence that researchers found issues in selected real-world installations; it is not evidence that all trains are easy to hack, that any named system remains vulnerable today, or that a successful remote attack caused a crash.
