Yes—wireless tire-pressure monitoring sensors can expose a car’s movement patterns when their persistent identifiers are collected repeatedly. A 2026 study reports real-world monitoring that observed at least 20,000 cars, but that figure does not mean every car was successfully tracked or identified. The findings demonstrate a privacy capability, not proof that every vehicle is vulnerable or that drivers are being actively monitored.
Can someone track my car through its tire pressure sensors?
Potentially, by listening for recurring wireless signals from direct tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) sensors. If a sensor transmits an identifier that remains stable, an observer can recognize its signal at different times and places. Linking repeated sightings can reveal movement patterns even if the broadcast does not contain the driver’s name.
A 2026 study, “Can’t Hide Your Stride: Inferring Car Movement Patterns from Passive TPMS Measurements”, reports a ten-week measurement campaign. The authors say they verified 12 cars and observed at least 20,000 cars. Those are different measures: the observation total is not evidence that all those cars were tracked to a known identity. The study describes equipment costing as little as $100 per receiver and says a malicious actor could scale collection to several thousand cars. That cost is for receiver equipment, not a tracking service or a recommended consumer product.

Neither source establishes that a driver’s name is directly broadcast.

What do tire pressure sensors transmit?
In direct TPMS designs, sensors in or at the tires transmit readings wirelessly to the vehicle. A transmission may include pressure and temperature information as well as an identifier. The identifier matters for privacy: if it persists, observers can link signals over time even though pressure and temperature are not themselves a person’s identity.
Implementations vary. A 2017 study examined radio propagation across three vehicle classes and describes direct TPMS sensors transmitting readings with a static unique identifier; it does not establish that every vehicle uses the same design or sends identical data. See “TPMS Sensor Radio Frequency Measurements for Privacy Concerns.”

Does this affect every car?
No model-by-model vulnerability list is established by the cited sources, so the findings should not be generalized to every make, model, year, or TPMS implementation. The 2026 field study demonstrates that passive collection and movement-pattern inference are feasible in its measurement setting; it does not prove that every car is trackable, that every observed car was successfully followed, or that anyone is currently tracking a particular driver.
Earlier studies show this is not a newly recognized class of concern, but their results apply to the systems and vehicles they evaluated:

- 2010: Rouf and coauthors reported eavesdropping at roughly 40 meters, static 32-bit identifiers, and remote spoofing in the systems they studied. Those findings are historical study-specific results, not a current fleet-wide guarantee. Read the USENIX Security Symposium paper.
- 2021: Vaszary and coauthors demonstrated tracking uniquely identifiable sensors up to 40 meters using an off-the-shelf software-defined radio and proposed identifier randomization. This is separate research from the 2026 field campaign, not a range measurement from that study. Read the 2021 paper.
Can I turn off or block TPMS?
The cited sources do not establish a safe owner-installed fix, a model-specific way to disable the system, or a consumer blocker that prevents tracking. TPMS is a safety feature, and blocking its signals may interfere with the vehicle’s ability to monitor tire pressure. Do not disable it or buy an alleged privacy shield on the strength of these findings.
Identifier randomization is a proposed system-level privacy measure in the 2021 research, not a demonstrated retrofit that owners can install. If you are concerned about a particular vehicle, ask its manufacturer or a qualified service professional whether its TPMS design can be identified and what, if anything, the manufacturer supports. The cited studies do not identify a current consumer provider or verified product that resolves the privacy risk.
