Sometimes, in specific settings—but PARO has not been proven to relieve pain generally. The strongest direct evidence is a small randomized pilot in long-term-care residents with dementia and chronic pain: people who interacted with PARO showed less researcher-rated pain behavior and used fewer as-needed medications than people receiving usual care. Staff ratings did not show a significant pain difference, and the trial authors say larger, longer studies are needed.
What the strongest chronic-pain trial found
A 2020 pilot randomized controlled trial by Pu, Moyle, Jones, and Todorovic studied 43 people aged 65 or older with dementia and chronic pain in three Australian long-term-care facilities. For six weeks, the PARO group had individual, nonfacilitated 30-minute sessions five days a week; the comparison group received usual care.
The primary measure was researchers’ observation of pain behavior before and after sessions. After statistical adjustment, the PARO group had a lower observed-pain estimate than the usual-care group: −0.514 (95% confidence interval −0.774 to −0.254; P < .001). This is a reported group estimate, not a percentage reduction. The study also found fewer as-needed medications in the PARO group (−1.175; 95% CI −2.205 to −0.145; P = .025).

Staff-rated pain did not differ significantly between groups. Neither did agitation, anxiety, depression, or regularly scheduled medication use. The researchers’ observations therefore suggest a possible benefit, but the difference was not consistent across pain assessments or all outcomes.

The trial authors concluded, “PARO shows promise in reducing pain and medications for individuals with dementia and chronic pain in long-term care facilities.” They also wrote, “Larger randomized controlled trials with longer time frames are needed to identify further and test the use of PARO in long-term care settings.” Those are the authors’ conclusions from a pilot, not an independent guideline or regulator endorsement.
How the other pain studies compare
These studies ask different questions and use different populations and measures. An experiment that changes pain ratings briefly in healthy volunteers cannot establish treatment of ongoing pain in care-home residents; a short hospital observation cannot show that a benefit lasts.

What dementia research says beyond pain
A 2017 cluster-randomized trial across 28 Australian long-term-care facilities included 415 people aged 60 or older with dementia. It compared PARO with a look-alike plush toy whose robotic features were disabled, as well as usual care. PARO participants were more verbally and visually engaged than plush-toy participants. Some video-coded mood and agitation outcomes favored PARO over usual care, but the Cohen-Mansfield Agitation Inventory–Short Form showed no difference among the groups. These findings support particular engagement and mood signals, not a broad conclusion that PARO treats dementia symptoms.

A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis covered 12 articles and 1,461 participants. It reported a moderate pooled effect on medication use and small effects on anxiety, agitation, and depression; the pooled effect on total sleep time was negligible. Its narrative synthesis suggested reduced apathy and increased sociability, which are separate from the pooled results. The review rated overall evidence quality low across outcomes because of methodological limitations, small samples, and wide confidence intervals.

What PARO is—and what buying information is established
PARO is a physical, interactive therapeutic robot shaped like a baby harp seal. Sense Medical’s product description says it has sensors for touch, posture, light, and audio direction; a microphone; and a voice that imitates a baby harp seal. The seller also describes it as rechargeable and says its fur can be cleaned with sanitising wipes. These are seller-provided product details, not independently validated engineering specifications or cleaning guidance.
As of 5 October 2026, Sense Medical lists PARO at £6,000 excluding VAT and says it is available in the UK and Republic of Ireland exclusively through that seller. That is a regional seller offer, not a price that can be assumed elsewhere. The available information does not establish that Amazon currently stocks PARO.
