More detailed CGI skin can make a digital face feel more human, but it cannot by itself prove that the uncanny valley has been crossed. A controlled 2021 study found that participants rated higher-fidelity MetaHuman faces as more humanlike and less eerie than lower-fidelity versions. The result is encouraging, but it applies to that experiment—not to every audience, game, film, or digital-human workflow. Skin is only one part of the impression; facial movement, lighting, representation, and practical performance limits matter too.
What makes detailed CGI skin look believable?
Real skin is not simply a high-resolution color texture. Its appearance comes from interacting visual cues: surface roughness, highlights, fine pores and wrinkles, and light scattering beneath the surface. A face can have plenty of detail and still look artificial if those cues do not fit one another—or if they do not suit the face’s age, lighting, viewing distance, or apparent skin condition.
Epic Developer Community’s Unreal Engine 5.8 documentation puts the challenge plainly: “Getting Human skin to look correct when rendered is a very complex topic with no single perfect solution for getting correct results.” The guide treats skin as a set of related material and rendering decisions rather than a single magic setting.
Surface response and fine detail
Epic suggests about 0.4 as a starting roughness value, to be tuned for factors such as scale, distance, age, and whether the skin is meant to look wet or dry. It gives 0.35 as a specular starting value based on measured real-world specular values. These are production starting points in Epic’s guide, not universal constants or results from an independent perception test.

- Includes Geralt’s silver sword, steel sword, sheath, Griffin head trophy, Igni fire blast, and base
- Figure may vary as ultra rare Chase Figure may be received
- Showcased in The Witcher themed window box packaging
The same documentation recommends putting wrinkle detail in a face normal map and using a separately tiling texture for pores. Detail also needs to hold up at different viewing distances: pore patterns that look plausible in a close-up may become distracting or disappear when a character is small on screen. Roughness and texture detail may need to change across viewing scales and mip levels.
What the uncanny-valley study actually found
In a 2021 study, Higgins, Egan, Fribourg, Cowan, and McDonnell compared MetaHumans at two fidelity levels. The researchers presented 24 clips, varied positive and negative emotional valence, and asked 20 participants—10 male and 10 female—to rate human-likeness, eeriness, attractiveness, and emotion. Identity, motion, voice, lighting, and rendering conditions were aligned between the fidelity versions.

- Designed with Ultra Articulation with up to 22 moving parts for full range of posing

Within that setup, participants rated the higher-fidelity faces as more humanlike and less eerie. That is evidence that greater fidelity helped in the comparison the researchers tested. It does not establish a general threshold at which CGI stops seeming uncanny, nor does a 20-person sample represent all viewers. The authors also noted that the facial animation used real-time tracking and solving with only minimal cleanup; they suggested that higher-quality facial animation could further affect eeriness.

Viewers see a face move, speak, and react—not just sit under ideal lighting. A convincing pore texture cannot compensate for expressions that arrive late, shift unstably, or fail to match speech. The face’s surface and its motion have to work together.

Research presented at SIGGRAPH 2025 addresses finer-scale facial movement, including local expression, skin furrowing, and wrinkles. EA’s account of its 2024 SIGGRAPH Asia paper, “A Theory of Stabilization by Skull Carving,” makes a related point: separating rigid skull motion from facial expression is important for controllable, natural-looking animation. Together, these approaches illustrate why believable digital skin involves both how a surface is rendered and how it deforms.
Does the result work equally well across faces and audiences?
That cannot be assumed. A 2023 study by Victor Araujo, Angelo Brandelli Costa, and Soraia Raupp Musse examined virtual-human stimuli with dark and white skin colors. In that experiment, participants perceived the dark-skin characters as less realistic but more comfortable than the white-skin characters. The authors discussed rendering and illumination as possible influences, and the finding is specific to their stimuli and study—not a universal verdict about viewers or any particular production pipeline.

The practical implication is to evaluate a range of faces and skin tones under representative lighting, expressions, and viewing conditions. A result for one face or complexion is not enough to establish that a system renders people consistently well.
What current digital-human methods can—and cannot—show
Epic describes MetaHuman as a framework for creating and animating digital humans, with workflows involving presets, scans, sculpted meshes, and refinements such as skin. That makes it a relevant production example, but the availability of a creation workflow is not independent evidence that its characters will read as realistic to every viewer.

SIGGRAPH 2025 proceedings describe research methods aimed at specific challenges: ScaffoldAvatar for local expression and fine-scale facial motion, and TeGA for retaining detail while representing localized movement and high-resolution skin wrinkling. The same proceedings describe SqueezeMe as addressing the memory and compute costs of Gaussian-avatar rendering. Its reported demonstration ran three Gaussian avatars at 72 frames per second on a Meta Quest 3. That is a method-specific result, not a performance guarantee for other devices, scenes, or production workloads.

A useful evaluation should separate perceptual quality from technical feasibility. Compare characters under conditions that resemble their intended use rather than relying on a still close-up or a single polished demo.
- Close-up appearance: Check whether pores, wrinkles, highlights, and shading remain plausible at the distances where viewers will actually see the character.
- Expression and speech: Watch dialogue and emotional changes for stable, well-timed movement, not only a neutral pose.
- Target hardware and pipeline: Measure memory and compute demands on the actual platform. A film final-render workflow and a real-time game have different constraints.
- Range of faces and lighting: Test varied faces and skin tones across the lighting and expressions expected in the finished work.
- Viewer response: If the uncanny effect is a concern, collect reactions to the relevant characters and scenes rather than treating technical detail as a proxy for audience comfort.
These criteria do not rank every commercial system, and the available studies do not establish one universal benchmark for crossing the uncanny valley. They do clarify why a detailed material alone is an incomplete test.
