A 2025 study reported evidence that sunlight can drive nitrous oxide (N₂O) formation in oxygen-rich surface-water samples through a proposed abiotic process called photochemodenitrification. The finding offers a possible additional explanation for oceanic N₂O, but it does not show that this pathway caused a global surge or establish how much it contributes to emissions.
What is the newly reported mechanism?
Nitrous oxide is the gas at issue—not methane. In a study identified by DOI 10.1126/science.adq0302, researchers reported that irradiated water samples could form N₂O without the process being suppressed by a biocide. The Georgia Institute of Technology’s summary describes the proposed pathway as light-induced, abiotic N₂O production in oxic fresh and marine surface waters.
The name photochemodenitrification describes a chemical transformation associated with light. It is distinct from microbial N₂O production, though the reported result does not rule out or replace biological sources.

In the experiments summarized by Chemistry World, researchers incubated water from multiple Spanish locations and the Baltic Sea in quartz vials. N₂O production tracked ultraviolet irradiation intensity, and adding a biocide did not suppress the effect.

- THE ORGINAL DIY BACTERIA TEST KIT that is certified accurate by Good Housekeeping Labs, American Red Cross, Underwriter Labs, and Merck Labs. Designed and developed by our EPA certified scientists. Made in the USA.
- PATENTED TECHNOLOGY: Detects 50 different species of coliform bacteria (including E. coli), as low as 1-organism. Test any freshwater supply.
- 3RD PARTY STERILIZATION: Every Safe Home kit is sterilized by a certified facility (see attached certificate) and guaranteed to be “free from bacteria” before you test. This process assures zero “false positive results” from product contamination, as may be experienced with other kits who skip this sterilization process.
- FAST RESULTS- Get results as quickly as 6 hours. May take up to 72 hours based on incubation conditions, and concentrations of bacteria in the water being tested.
- YOUR PURCHASE MAKES A DIFFERENCE in people’s lives. Safe Home donates a portion of every test kit sale to clean water initiatives around the globe. See attached images with this listing, to learn more.
The team also added nitrate and nitrite labeled with nitrogen-15 and detected labeled N₂O. That result supports the proposed conversion of those nitrogen compounds under irradiation. Together, the irradiation response, biocide result and isotope tracing are evidence for an abiotic pathway in the sampled water; they do not by themselves measure how much N₂O the process produces in the ocean at large.
How does this compare with microbial sources?
Microbes are established candidates for N₂O production in different aquatic conditions. The Chemistry World report contrasts microbial production during ammonia oxidation in oxygenated water with N₂O formation during nitrate reduction in oxygen-poor water. The newly proposed process instead concerns light-exposed, oxygen-rich surface water and does not require biological activity in the reported experiments.

As Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution researcher Scott Wankel put it in the Chemistry World report: “For a long time we’ve known that whatever nitrous oxide was getting out into the atmosphere was made in the upper [ocean] layer, and we thought that was nitrification by ammonia-oxidising bacteria and archaea – but they don’t like light,”

Does this explain a mysterious global surge?
No. The reported experiments suggest a previously underappreciated source mechanism, not a demonstrated cause of a global increase. The Chemistry World report says researchers were still trying to determine precise figures, and the available reporting provides no quantified share of oceanic or global N₂O emissions attributable to photochemodenitrification.

Jennifer Glass, a professor of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Georgia Tech, said in the report: “This just goes to show that sometimes it’s not biological.” The point is that chemical processes may also matter—not that microbial production has been disproven or that the new pathway explains all ocean N₂O.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why does nitrous oxide matter?
N₂O is a potent greenhouse gas and an ozone-depleting agent. If sunlight-driven production occurs widely enough in surface waters, it could add to the sources scientists need to account for. Whether it makes a substantial contribution beyond the experimental samples remains unresolved in the cited reporting.
