A 2014 laboratory study proposed using sunlight and an iron-oxide catalyst to damage Aedes aegypti eggs and larvae. It tested a floating porous block—not sunlight alone—and its results do not show that dengue virus or dengue disease can be eradicated.
How the sunlight-activated approach is supposed to work
The material described by researchers was a floating, porous block made with autoclaved porous brick or aerated concrete and carrying dispersed iron oxide. When exposed to sunlight, the catalyst was proposed to generate hydroxyl radicals, highly reactive species that can oxidize organic matter and harm living tissue. The researchers’ theory was that this chemistry could affect mosquito larvae directly and reduce organic material that serves as larval food.
The study identified hematite (α-Fe₂O₃) as the predominant iron phase using Mössbauer spectroscopy. It also reported evidence for hydroxyl species based on characteristic mass-to-charge values obtained by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Those findings support the proposed material and reaction pathway; they are not evidence of disease prevention.

What the reported experiment found
In a controlled test summarized by Chemistry World on 11 December 2014, beakers containing mosquito larvae and catalytic blocks were exposed to irradiation for one week. The report gave these outcomes:
#1 Best Overall
- The only product with bti, bacteria toxic only to mosquito larvae
- Lasts for 30 days and treats 100 square feet of surface water
- Non-toxic to all other wildlife, pets, fish and humans
- Labeled for organic gardening by the usepa
| Irradiation in the reported one-week test | Reported larval outcome | What the result establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Sunlight | 20% of larvae survived | An outcome in the described controlled beaker experiment; not a field-effectiveness result. |
| Artificial UV light | 100% of larvae died | An outcome under the experiment’s artificial-UV condition; it does not show that outdoor sunlight produces the same result. |
The paper also reported a deleterious effect on hatching of Aedes aegypti eggs and said larval proliferation became unfeasible under the tested photocatalytic process. These are experimental findings about mosquito life stages, not measurements of dengue infections or human health.
Why “dengue eradication” overstates what was shown
Dengue is a viral disease transmitted by mosquitoes. The study’s target was mosquito-vector proliferation, specifically eggs and larvae. It did not demonstrate eradication of dengue virus, prevention of human infections, or a reduction in dengue cases. The headline’s use of “eradication” refers to the researchers’ intended vector-control aim, not a proven eradication of dengue as a disease.

The available reports do not establish how reliably the blocks would work in outdoor water with varying sunlight, temperature, water chemistry, organic matter, or other environmental conditions. Nor do they provide field efficacy data or establish current regulatory or commercial availability. A beaker experiment is not a basis for treating household water or substituting this material for established public-health guidance.

In the 2014 Chemistry World report, researcher Jadson Belchior estimated that preparing 800 small blocks would cost less than US$0.30 and claimed the blocks remained effective for more than two months. These are attributed historical claims, not current prices, independently verified durability measurements, or specifications for a product available today. The sources describe a research material and do not establish that the tested formulation is sold to consumers or that ordinary iron oxide or building blocks would reproduce it.

The study and its source
The study, “A photocatalytic process for the eradication of dengue through ˙OH generation in the presence of sunlight and iron oxide,” was written by Geison V. Pereira, Victor A. Freitas, Henrique S. Oliveira, Luiz C. A. Oliveira, and Jadson C. Belchior. It appeared in RSC Advances, volume 4, issue 109, pages 63650–63654, in 2014. The Royal Society of Chemistry article record provides the study description and abstract. The contemporary experimental summary and attributed claims appeared in Chemistry World’s report; the Royal Society of Chemistry blog post confirms the paper citation.
