Subway air can contain elevated levels of fine particulate matter, and general evidence links fine-particle exposure with respiratory and cardiovascular harm. But pollution levels vary sharply between systems and locations, and the evidence does not show that a particular subway ride will make a passenger ill.
Is subway air pollution bad for your health?
It can be a health concern, but “subway air” is not one uniform exposure. Concentrations differ by transit system, station design, ventilation, train frequency, season and passenger activity. A person waiting on a platform may experience different conditions from someone riding in a train, and measurements from one city should not be treated as a prediction for another.
Health Canada’s Guidance for improving subway air quality (March 2022) reports these platform PM2.5 estimates from its Urban Transportation Exposure Study:
| System | Estimated platform PM2.5 concentration |
|---|---|
| Toronto | 106 µg/m³ |
| Montreal | 36 µg/m³ |
| Vancouver | 40 µg/m³ |
These are estimates for the named Canadian systems reported by Health Canada in 2022, based on Van Ryswyk et al. (2017); they are not current readings for every station or a universal subway range. Health Canada also estimated that subway commuting accounted for 11% to 21% of daily PM2.5 exposure in those systems. In a separate study of 115 stations, it reports observed PM2.5 concentrations ranging from 10 to 125 µg/m³, a study-specific range rather than a benchmark for all subways.

Other local studies also show why a single number can mislead. A 2015 study of Barcelona platforms reported average PM2.5 concentrations during operating hours of 20–51 µg/m³ in the warmer period and 41–91 µg/m³ in the colder period. The study found that most particulate matter in underground stations originated within the system. Its results describe the measured Barcelona conditions, not all metro networks (study abstract).
What is the dust in subway stations?
The main air-pollution concern in the reviewed subway guidance is particulate matter, especially PM2.5: particles with aerodynamic diameters below 2.5 micrometres. Rail, wheels, brakes and electrical components can generate particles as trains operate and parts wear. Outdoor air can contribute too.

Some subway particles are iron-rich, consistent with mechanical wear in the rail system. The mix and amount depend on the system and conditions. In Barcelona, the 2015 study found that abrasion and wear from rails, wheels and braking pads accounted for much of the underground-station particulate matter.
Can subway air pollution cause asthma or heart disease?
Fine-particle exposure is associated with serious health effects in the general population. Health Canada says inhaled PM2.5 can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream; its guidance lists asthma, lung cancer, coronary disease, heart attacks, stroke and reduced life expectancy among the adverse health effects associated with PM2.5. That general evidence does not establish that a specific passenger’s subway trip caused asthma, heart disease or another condition, nor does it quantify the long-term health consequences of subway travel itself.

The World Health Organization’s technical brief on air-pollution health effects, dated 21 June 2026, describes effects across respiratory, cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, reproductive and metabolic systems, and identifies children, pregnant people, older people, people with chronic disease and people in lower socioeconomic groups as more vulnerable to air pollution overall. The brief concerns air pollution generally, not subway exposure. WHO’s estimate of about 6.6 million deaths worldwide each year from air pollution, with close to 84% of those deaths attributed to noncommunicable diseases, is likewise a global estimate—not a count of deaths caused by subway air.
The UK Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants (COMEAP) published a statement specifically about particulate pollution exposure among people travelling on the London Underground. Its 2019 landing page identifies that scope and links technical papers; it does not, by itself, support a precise risk estimate or a definitive conclusion about passenger health.

Why does exposure differ between stations and trains?
Particle levels reflect both what a system generates and how it moves or removes air. In a 2021 study of Stockholm underground platforms, train frequency, train type, passenger flow, outdoor background pollution and maintenance were associated with platform particulate levels. The study model estimated that ventilation could notably decrease PM, but that finding is not a universal estimate of the reduction another system would achieve (study).
A 2014 Barcelona study found that platform PM10 15-minute averages ranged from 33 to 332 µg/m³ across the stations and conditions it measured. Narrow, single-track stations depended more on forced ventilation, while spacious, double-track stations were less affected when ventilation was shut down. These local results illustrate why ventilation changes should be evaluated for the station involved, rather than applied as a blanket operating rule (study).

Platform screen doors were associated with lower PM2.5 on newer Barcelona lines in the 2015 study. The authors cautioned that ventilation, train frequency and design could also account for the difference, so the observation does not isolate the doors’ effect.
What can transit systems do to improve subway air?
Health Canada describes six areas for action: “There are six key areas that have been identified in scientific literature as options to improve subway air quality: ventilation, filtration, air quality monitoring, reducing subway PM emissions, vacuuming and washing, and platform screen doors (PSDs).” The measures differ in whether they prevent particles at their source or remove them after they are generated:
| Measure | How it may help | What systems need to assess |
|---|---|---|
| Air-quality monitoring | Identifies where and when concentrations are elevated and tracks changes. | Use local measurements to assess conditions and confirm whether interventions work. |
| Ventilation | Moves or dilutes air through forced mechanical systems. | Optimize operation against schedules and measured indoor and outdoor PM; outside air quality matters. Effectiveness varies by station design. |
| Filtration | Removes particles from air after they are airborne. | Health Canada says in-train filtration may reduce commuter exposure more effectively than platform filtration, since riders spend much of their subway time aboard trains and station-wide filtration could require many units. |
| Source reduction | Limits particles generated by train operation. | Options include reducing friction-brake use and considering more durable brake materials. |
| Vacuuming and washing | Remove accumulated dust that could otherwise be disturbed. | Cleaning approaches need to suit the location and maintenance operation. |
| Platform screen doors and particle removal | Screen doors may alter exchange between platforms and tracks; magnetic removal targets iron-rich particles common in subway PM. | Evaluate local effectiveness and operational constraints rather than assuming the same result across networks. |
Health Canada advises testing strategies where they are implemented because their effectiveness varies among locations and systems. Monitoring is therefore part of the intervention, not just a way to describe the problem. Ventilation and filtration also need to be assessed in their actual operating context, including outside-air conditions and system constraints.

The reviewed evidence supports system-level measures, not a particular passenger product or personal device as a proven subway-specific protection strategy. A consumer PM sensor can measure local air but does not reduce exposure, and the available guidance does not establish such a sensor as necessary. The evidence reviewed here also does not establish portable or wearable air purifiers or respirators as effective controls for subway exposure.
