Yes—sorghum is a promising diversification option for some European farms facing hotter, drier conditions, particularly where maize is exposed to heat and water stress. But drought tolerance is not a guarantee of a successful crop: local maturity, moisture at sowing, variety, intended use and market access all matter. The evidence supports considering sorghum where it fits, not replacing maize across Europe.

Why European farmers are considering sorghum

European agriculture faces increasing pressure from heat, drought, floods, pests, diseases and declining soil health, according to the European Commission’s climate-change overview. Southern Europe is especially exposed to heat and water shortages. Warmer conditions may make some warm-season crops more viable farther north, but those potential gains do not cancel out losses in more vulnerable regions.

The European Commission’s heatwave guidance identifies sorghum as more tolerant of high temperatures than maize. The European Research Council (ERC) also describes the crop as tolerant of drought and heat, and reports that it is playing a growing role in European crop rotations. These are reasons to assess sorghum as one adaptation option—not evidence that it will outperform maize on every farm.

What the European uptake figures show

An ERC feature published on 13 March 2025 reports a 57% increase in total European sorghum production over the preceding decade. It also reports 103,000 hectares of grain sorghum in France in the previous year, and more than 100,000 tonnes produced in Catalonia in 2023, over 90% of which went to animal feed. The feature does not specify the exact start and end years behind the decade-long increase or identify the underlying statistical dataset, so these figures are best treated as reported indicators of uptake, not a complete EU statistical series.

Sweet Sorghum Seeds 300pcs – Easy Growing, High Yield, Non-GMO, Ideal for Home Gardens & Outdoor Planting
  • Easy Growing: Sweet sorghum seeds thrive in various climates and soil conditions, making them perfect for both novice and experienced gardeners to cultivate successfully
  • High Yield Potential: Each pack contains 300 premium seeds that can produce abundant sweet sorghum stalks, offering excellent value for home gardeners
  • Non-GMO Quality: Pure, naturally-sourced sweet sorghum seeds without genetic modifications, ensuring authentic and traditional crop characteristics
  • Versatile Uses: Sweet sorghum can be grown for multiple purposes including syrup production, animal feed, or as an attractive ornamental grass in your landscape
  • Garden Ready: Seeds are carefully selected and packaged to maintain optimal viability, ready for immediate planting in your home garden or outdoor growing space

Sorghum has uses beyond animal feed, including human food. Grain intended for food and grain intended for feed are distinct products, with different handling and market requirements; a farmer’s likely buyer or processing route is therefore part of the crop decision.

Where sorghum may be preferable to maize—and where it may not

In a field where high temperatures and water shortages pose a significant risk to maize, sorghum’s heat and drought tolerance may make it a useful alternative or rotation crop. However, the reviewed European sources do not establish an EU-wide yield advantage over maize, nor do they provide a comparable European farm cost table. The Joint Research Centre’s 2026 outlook forecasts summer-crop risks in general; its figures are not sorghum-specific. It would be misleading to turn that broader outlook into a numerical claim about sorghum yields.

  • Heat and drought exposure: Is the field’s main risk the kind of heat or water stress for which sorghum may be better suited?
  • Growing window: Can the crop mature before late-season stress or other local constraints?
  • Establishment moisture: Is there enough soil moisture for germination and early stand development?
  • Intended output: Is the crop for grain, forage or feed, and does the variety suit that use?
  • Seed and market access: Are locally adapted varieties and a realistic buyer or processing route available?

Drought tolerance still depends on a successful start

A crop can tolerate drought better than another and still struggle when it is sown into dry soil. An EU CAP Network practice abstract for Rhineland-Palatinate describes sorghum as drought-tolerant but warns that low soil moisture can reduce germination and hamper stand development. In the warm sites below 300 metres described in that regional example, it says early-ripening varieties are needed. That maturity guidance belongs to the conditions in the example; it should not be treated as a rule for every European region.

Sorghum Seeds: 150 PCS Premium Annual Seeds – Drought-Resistant, Multi-Use for Gardens, Livestock Feed & Crop Cultivation
  • Premium Seed Count: Includes 150 high-quality sorghum seeds per package, providing ample quantity for establishing substantial garden plots, experimental cultivation areas, or multiple planting seasons to ensure successful germination and crop establishment
  • Drought-Resistant Variety: These hardy annual sorghum seeds thrive in challenging growing conditions with minimal water requirements, making them ideal for regions with limited rainfall or water conservation practices while maintaining robust growth and productivity
  • Multi-Purpose Cultivation: Versatile seeds suitable for diverse applications including ornamental garden displays, nutritious livestock feed production, grain harvesting for human consumption, and sustainable crop rotation systems to enhance soil health and farm productivity
  • Annual Growth Cycle: Fast-growing annual plants that complete their full life cycle within one growing season, allowing for flexible planting schedules, quick harvest turnaround, and the opportunity to experiment with different varieties each year
  • Garden & Farm Applications: Perfect for home gardeners seeking unique ornamental grasses, small-scale farmers developing sustainable feed sources, or agricultural enthusiasts exploring alternative grain crops with excellent adaptability to various soil types and growing conditions

For a farm considering the crop, the practical implication is to assess sowing conditions and local maturity requirements alongside drought tolerance. A locally adapted certified variety and advice from a qualified regional agronomist are more relevant than a generic seed listing.

What current climate figures do—and do not—say about sorghum

The European Commission’s 2026 heatwave guidance says crop losses caused by droughts and heatwaves have tripled over the past 50 years. The Joint Research Centre’s 2026 summer-crop outlook places the worst end of its EU yield forecasts at 14% below the five-year average. The latter is a broad summer-crop forecast, not a sorghum estimate; neither figure demonstrates a specific yield response for sorghum.

Hit List Seed® Grain Sorghum Food Plot Seeds for Deer [Annual Mix] - Deer Food Plot Seed - Sorghum Seeds for Planting - Deer Plot Seed Mix - 100% Grain Sorghum - Summer & Spring Planting - 5 lbs
  • Drought & Heat Resistant: Great for those in hot climates and little to no watering ability!
  • Annual Warm Season Grass: This is a great food source for deer and upland birds, and the deer normally do not eat Grain Sorghum in it’s early stages!
  • Deer Bedding & Upland Birds: Grain Sorghum is a great food source for deer and upland birds, and a great source for bedding and cover for deer during the Fall
  • Late Fall & Winter Food Source: Since deer do not normally eat Grain Sorghum in it’s early stages, it makes a great late fall & winter food source for both deer and upland birds!
  • Beginners & Veterans: Great food plot seed for seasoned veterans and beginners alike - this germinates quickly can be planted with minimal equipment.

Together, these sources establish the climate pressure behind crop diversification and explain why a heat- and drought-tolerant crop merits attention. They do not establish how much sorghum would improve yields, profitability or resilience on a particular European farm. Those outcomes depend on local conditions and management.

Seed rules and local compliance

EU law sets isolation distances for sorghum seed production. Farmers producing seed should consult the consolidated EU seed law and applicable national rules for current compliance requirements. Those seed-production rules are separate from the agronomic question of whether sorghum is a suitable crop for a particular field.
