Someone can see information from your iPhone without installing anything on it, but almost always through access they already have: a location share you turned on, your Apple Account or another online account, a linked device, or, in rare cases, a sophisticated targeted attack. “Without installing software” does not mean “without any access at all,” and no single rule covers every possible method.
This guide explains each pathway, shows you how to check the ones you can control on your iPhone, and explains what to do first if you think someone may be monitoring you.
What “without installing software” does and doesn’t mean
Most people asking this question are worried about a partner, an ex, a family member, or an employer seeing their messages, location, or photos. In those cases, the access usually comes from something that was set up earlier and never revisited: a shared location, a password that someone else knows, a signed-in session on a computer, or a forwarding rule in email.

It is designed to evade detection. Sources such as the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describe it as hard to spot, which is why an absence of obvious signs does not prove a phone is clean.

Given that range, no blanket claim is accurate. Remote viewing of an iPhone is not always possible, and it is not always impossible. What matters is which pathway is in play.
The five pathways, compared

Most cases the average person encounters fall in the first three rows. Those are the ones you can check with built-in controls.
Start with Safety Check
Safety Check is Apple’s built-in review for people, apps, and devices that have access to your information. It is available on iPhones running iOS 16 or later. Before you start, confirm your version:

- Open Settings, then tap General, then About. Look at the Software Version line.
- If your version is iOS 16 or later, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check.
- Confirm that your Apple Account is signed in and uses two-factor authentication. Safety Check depends on this.
- Tap Manage Sharing & Access. Review the tabs for people you share with, apps with access, shared information, devices, and verification numbers.
- Remove any access you do not recognise or no longer want, and update your Apple Account password and security settings where prompted.
- Use Emergency Reset only if you understand it. It quickly stops sharing with people and apps, which may be noticed, so read the section below about safety before using it.
Safety Check reviews only what Apple controls. Run it, then continue with the checks below.
What Safety Check does not cover
Apple states that Safety Check cannot review or change some non-Apple accounts and passwords, social-media sharing, or information shared from another device. That leaves a meaningful gap. Check these separately:
- Email accounts, including forwarding rules, auto-replies, and signed-in sessions on computers or other phones.
- Messaging apps and their linked-device lists.
- Social-media accounts, including tagged locations, friend lists, and third-party app permissions.
- Cloud storage accounts and shared albums or drives.
- Any other device that receives your messages, calls, or photos.
Changing a password on one account does not reset sessions in another, so review sign-ins for each service after you change credentials.

Review location sharing in Find My and elsewhere
Location sharing is the most common ordinary way someone sees where you are. It can appear in several places: the Find My app, Maps, Contacts, and Messages. Apple’s guidance is to review who can see your location and which devices are connected to your Apple Account.

- Unusual battery drain that you cannot otherwise explain.
- Unusually high data use.
- Another person knowing private details that you have not shared with them.
These signs are not proof. Battery drain and data use have many ordinary causes, and the signs can be absent when monitoring is present. A single quick check that finds nothing does not establish that a phone is clean. If the signs persist, or if someone’s knowledge of your activity is hard to explain, treat the question as open and move to the safety steps.

FTC consumer guidance puts safety first. If the phone may be monitored, consider the following before changing settings or deleting anything:
- Make a safety plan. Think about where you can go and who you can contact if the person reacts badly to a change.
- Contact a domestic-violence advocate or local law enforcement from a different device that the person cannot see, not the one you suspect.
- Preserve evidence where appropriate, such as screenshots of messages or notes about what you have noticed. Do not wipe the phone just yet.
- Avoid abrupt changes. Deleting apps, changing sharing, or resetting the phone can alert the person monitoring it.
Once you are safe, you can run Safety Check, review accounts, and consider a clean device or new accounts. An advocate can help you decide the order.

When Lockdown Mode or a threat notification applies
Lockdown Mode
Lockdown Mode is an optional, extreme protection that Apple describes for people who believe they may be targets of highly sophisticated cyberattacks. It restricts some functionality, which is the trade-off. It is not a routine fix for a shared location or a compromised account, and it is not a spyware scanner.
Apple threat notifications
Apple sends threat notifications to users it believes were individually targeted by mercenary spyware. A notification is a specific alert, not a general scan result. Apple says genuine notifications do not ask you to click a link, install software or profiles, or disclose credentials. If you receive one, follow Apple’s official advice and seek expert assistance rather than trying to resolve it alone.
