Usually, no: knowing your iPhone’s phone number is not enough to secretly read its messages or control its apps. Remote exposure is more likely to involve access to your Apple Account or information you already share. Stalkerware generally has to be installed on the device, while highly sophisticated spyware can sometimes attack remotely—but Apple describes those attacks as rare and aimed at a small number of people.
A Bluetooth location tracker is a separate possibility: it may reveal where you are without giving anyone access to your iPhone’s contents. The right check depends on which kind of exposure you’re concerned about.
What “spying without access” can mean
“Without access” can mean no one has the phone in their hands, or that nobody has permission to use the phone or account. Those are different situations. A person may see information through account access or an existing sharing arrangement without having installed spyware. Conversely, software described as stalkerware is installed on a device without its owner’s knowledge, according to the Federal Trade Commission.

Can someone see your iPhone messages through iCloud?
Apple Account access can expose information associated with the account, but that does not mean that anyone who knows your email address or phone number can automatically read every message. What is available depends on the person’s access and the account’s settings. Apple’s account and device access checklist and Safety Check guide are useful for reviewing connected devices and sharing.

Look for access you do not recognize rather than assuming that a particular app or service is being monitored. A device listed under your Apple Account, a trusted phone number, or a sharing relationship may explain exposure without spyware having been installed on the iPhone.
How to check your iPhone safely
If it is safe for you to inspect the phone, begin with account access and sharing. Apple says Safety Check is available on iPhones running iOS 16 or later. Its options may be reduced when Screen Time restrictions or mobile device management (MDM) are present.

- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check.
- Choose Manage Sharing & Access to review information shared with people and apps. Use Emergency Reset if you need to stop sharing quickly and it is safe to do so.
- Review devices associated with your Apple Account and remove any you do not recognize. Check trusted phone numbers, then update your Apple Account password and iPhone passcode if doing so will not put you at risk.
- Inspect Face ID or Touch ID for appearances or fingerprints you did not add.
- Check for an unexpected configuration profile. Employers, schools, and other organizations often use profiles for legitimate management, so an unfamiliar profile warrants investigation but is not, by itself, proof of spying. Apple’s access checklist covers this check.
Battery drain, a warm phone, or ordinary glitches are not reliable proof of spyware. Likewise, not finding anything suspicious in settings does not rule out a sophisticated compromise.

If you suspect an AirTag or other location tracker
An unwanted-tracking alert concerns a physical location tracker, not remote access to your messages or apps. Apple documents prerequisites for these notifications, including Bluetooth, Location Services, and Tracking Notifications; Airplane Mode prevents notifications. Check Apple’s instructions for what to do when an AirTag, AirPods, Find My network accessory, or compatible Bluetooth tracker is detected with you. If you feel unsafe, consider your personal safety before confronting anyone or changing your routine.

If you fear stalkerware or an abusive person
Do not automatically delete apps, change passwords, or reset the phone. The FTC warns that investigating or removing stalkerware, or changing access, may alert an abusive person and increase danger. If possible, use a safer device to contact a trusted advocate or local support service and make a safety plan before changing anything.
In the United States, the FTC lists the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE and text START to 88788. Elsewhere, contact a local support service. The FTC’s stalkerware guidance explains the safety risks of investigating or removing this software.

What to do about an Apple threat notification
Apple threat notifications are intended to alert people who may have been individually targeted by mercenary spyware. An alert means Apple detected activity consistent with that kind of targeting; it is not, by itself, forensic confirmation that spyware was successfully installed. Amnesty International explains that forensic analysis is needed to confirm compromise in its guidance on what Apple threat notifications mean.

- Verify the notification by signing in to account.apple.com directly. Do not rely on links in an email or text claiming to be from Apple.
- Do not install a profile or disclose your Apple Account password or verification codes in response to a message. Apple says genuine threat notifications do not ask you to do those things.
- Contact a specialist. Apple recommends the Access Now Digital Security Helpline for people who receive a threat notification.
- Ask about Lockdown Mode if your circumstances suggest a credible targeted threat. Apple describes it as an optional, high-protection measure for the small number of people who may face sophisticated attacks; it restricts some features and changes normal device behavior. Apple says most people are not targeted by attacks of this nature. That does not make account or sharing checks unnecessary, but Lockdown Mode is not a routine fix for ordinary concerns about phone access.
