No smartphone app can diagnose sleep apnea or reliably rule it out on its own. Apps can record snoring, breathing sounds, movement, or signals from connected devices and may flag possible risk. Treat those observations as information to discuss with a healthcare professional—not as a diagnosis or an all-clear.

What sleep apps can detect

Phone-only apps generally use the microphone to record snoring and other breathing sounds, or use motion sensors to track movement during sleep. Some apps work with connected wearables that add pulse or oxygen-related measurements. What those signals can suggest depends on the particular product, its sensors, and how its algorithm interprets the data.

A snoring recording can document when and how loudly someone snores; it does not establish why the snoring happens or whether breathing repeatedly stops. A risk score is likewise an estimate, not a clinical finding. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) warns that accuracy varies substantially among consumer products. Most also cannot tell obstructive sleep apnea apart from central sleep apnea or other sleep-related breathing problems.

Why an app result is not a diagnosis

Screening and diagnosis answer different questions. A screening tool may flag a reason to seek evaluation. A diagnosis requires a medical provider to assess the person and interpret appropriate testing. In its advisory adopted January 10, 2025, the AASM stated: “Self-screening and risk assessment apps and devices are unable to diagnose sleep apnea or confirm its absence.” The AASM also says only a medical provider can diagnose conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and primary snoring.

EMAY Sleep Breathing Monitor for Airflow Tracking | Record Breathing Continuously On the App | Monitor Sleep Quality and Respiratory Events | Generate Professional Sleep Report with Data Analysis
  • As a home-use personal sleep monitor with breathing airflow recording capability, the device gives you an affordable and efficient way to measure your sleep condition. The advanced AI algorithm will have in-depth analysis on the collected data and generate a professional respiratory report.
  • Built-in three sensors in a probe to measure, record and analyze airflow to accurately monitor breathing. It starts to work right after you put it on with real-time monitoring. The appearance of the smooth waveform implies a normal breath, while any anomaly of the waveform indicates that a respiratory event is occurring and being analyzed.
  • Check the sleep information through the app to analyze your nighttime breathing and see the way it changes after waking up in the morning. Understand all your sleep details in a clear way to monitor the occurrence of respiratory events and improve overall sleep health.
  • The mask is made of food-grade silicone and is designed to achieve a perfect facial fit using three sizes of high elastic straps for all-night comfort. The small size and lightweight (10g) make it easier to wear and carry. Convenient to use at home or while traveling.
  • IMPORTANT NOTES Before Purchasing: 1. Can not be used with C-P-A-P mask at the same time. 2. Designed to monitor nasal breathing, not recommended for mouth breather. 3. Not for SpO2 / Pulse Rate recording. 4. Monitor your sleep breathing data (flow, AHI, snoring, etc) only, not helping you to breathe. 5. Can not replace doctor's diagnosis.

That distinction matters in both directions: a concerning app score does not prove apnea, and a reassuring score or quiet recording does not show that apnea is absent. A microphone may miss relevant breathing changes, and measurements from different products are not interchangeable. Do not use a consumer app score by itself to decide whether to start, stop, or change treatment.

What “FDA-cleared” means for sleep apps

The AASM technology review names Drowzle, SleepCheck Rx, and AcuPebble SA100 as FDA-cleared for prescreening or home screening of adults suspected of OSA. That intended use is narrower than diagnosing sleep apnea: the AASM says people at risk should seek medical attention and be tested with FDA-cleared diagnostic tools rather than rely on prescreening alone. Clearance for a screening purpose does not make a product a substitute for a clinician or diagnostic test.

Regulatory status and intended use are specific to a product and jurisdiction, and can change. Before relying on a named product, check its current status in the FDA database and read what population and purpose its clearance covers. The presence of FDA oversight does not mean every sleep tracker or snoring app is a medical diagnostic device.

The FDA’s mobile-software guidance explains that software may qualify as a medical device when it performs patient-specific medical analysis and a failure could pose a safety risk. Its examples include using a mobile accelerometer to collect motion information for sleep-apnea monitoring. That example explains why some software functions may receive medical-device oversight; it does not establish that any particular phone app can diagnose apnea.

How to compare apps without mistaking a score for proof

Star ratings do not show whether an app can detect sleep apnea accurately. If you are deciding whether to use one as a symptom log or screening aid, check what it is designed to do and what evidence supports that purpose.

  • Intended use: Is it a snoring log, a general risk screen, or a regulated prescreening tool? These are not the same as diagnosis.
  • Signals used: Does it analyze microphone audio, movement, pulse, oxygen-related data, or a combination? A signal source alone does not establish diagnostic accuracy.
  • Validation: Does the product describe how it was evaluated against polysomnography or a home sleep apnea test (HSAT)? Look for evidence relevant to the product’s stated use, rather than assuming one app’s results apply to another.
  • What it can distinguish: Check whether it has evidence for the condition it claims to screen for, and whether it can distinguish obstructive apnea from central apnea or other breathing disorders. Most consumer products cannot make that distinction.
  • Regulatory status: Verify clearance or authorization for the specific product, intended use, and country. Do not assume a claim in an app listing means it is cleared to diagnose.
  • Data and review: Read the privacy policy and find out whether you can access or share recordings and measurements with a clinician. An app report is useful context, but does not replace professional interpretation.

What to do if an app flags possible apnea

  1. Record the observations. Note the app’s result alongside symptoms such as loud snoring, pauses in breathing witnessed by another person, gasping during sleep, or daytime sleepiness. Treat the app’s output as an observation, not a diagnosis.
  2. Discuss it with a healthcare professional. Share the symptoms and any useful app records. A clinician can decide whether evaluation is appropriate; do not self-diagnose from a score.
  3. Complete testing if it is recommended. For an appropriate adult without complicating conditions, a provider may order an HSAT. Polysomnography remains the standard diagnostic test when indicated. The provider—not an app’s automatic score—must interpret the findings.
  4. Use a clinician-reviewed result. The AASM says raw HSAT data must be reviewed and interpreted by a qualified physician, even when software supplies an automatic score. Automatically scored results alone should not determine diagnosis or treatment.

When to seek care promptly

Do not wait for an app to confirm a problem if you have severe daytime sleepiness, a safety-critical driving risk, or concerning breathing symptoms. Seek prompt medical attention. If sleepiness could impair driving, avoid driving while impaired and contact a healthcare professional about the risk.
