Smart wound dressings can be designed to detect changes in a wound that may be associated with infection, but current evidence does not establish them as routine, proven early-infection tests. A sensor reading is a signal for assessment—not a diagnosis. The technology is promising, but many systems remain at the preclinical or early-feasibility stage.
What is a smart wound dressing?
“Smart dressing” describes a range of wound-care designs, not one standard product. Some are intended to monitor conditions in or around a wound. Others combine sensing with a responsive material or a function such as releasing an agent. Their readouts may be visible, electronic, or both.
The intended purpose matters: sensing a wound-related change is different from preventing infection, treating a wound, or diagnosing infection. A dressing that contains an antimicrobial material, for example, is not necessarily an infection detector.
How do infection-detecting wound dressings work?
Researchers are developing dressings that track signals associated with wound state. These can include pH, temperature, bacterial activity or enzymes, metabolites, reactive oxygen species, and moisture. Some designs monitor more than one parameter, with the aim of giving a fuller picture than a single measurement.

A measured change may be associated with infection or another change in healing. It does not prove that infection is present: a sensor detects its target signal, and a clinician must interpret that signal in context.
How do the main sensing approaches differ?
| Approach | Typical readout | Potential advantage | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Colorimetric | A visible color change in response to a target such as pH, bacterial enzymes, metabolites, or reactive oxygen species | Can provide an accessible visual indication without requiring a complex readout at the point of use | A color change alone does not diagnose infection or establish that the design is clinically accurate |
| Electrochemical | An electrical measurement associated with a sensed target | Can be designed for sensitive measurement | Sensitivity in a design or study does not by itself show improved diagnosis or patient outcomes |
| Fluorescence | A fluorescence signal linked to a target | Can offer molecular specificity, depending on the sensing design | Specificity at the sensor level does not prove that a dressing can reliably diagnose infection in clinical use |
These are design tradeoffs, not a proven ranking. The reviews do not establish that one approach is clinically superior across wound types, and modality-by-modality diagnostic accuracy has not been established across those settings.

Can a smart dressing tell if a wound is infected?
Not on the evidence currently described in these reviews. The strongest reason for caution is the gap between detecting a biological signal and validating a diagnosis in patients. A positive reading could prompt a clinician to assess the wound, but it should not be treated as a stand-alone diagnosis or as a substitute for care.
A 2024 scoping review focused on smart dressings for surgical site infection in arthroplasty identified 16 eligible studies and grouped the technologies into colorimetric, electrochemical, and fluorescence or photothermal responses. Six devices monitored more than one parameter. The review reported that none of the included dressings had been tested in humans with wound infections. That finding limits claims about early detection in routine patient care, particularly beyond the review’s arthroplasty-focused scope.

- Calcium Alginate Dressing size: 4in x 4in, 10 individually sterile package.
- Highly absorbency: Gel is rapidly formed when in contact with wound exude which provides moist wound healing environment and delivers calm and sooth sensation to the patient.
- Provide moist environment: Enhanced wet and dry strength for easy apply and remove.
- Conforms to the wound shape: Can be cut and shaped for wound bed, and be layered for deep wounds and packed for cavities.
- Scope of application: intended for moderate to heavily exuding wounds like partial and full thickness burns, donor sites, diabetic foot ulcer, leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, cavity wounds and most other granulating wounds.
How far along is the clinical evidence?
Validation varies by device. The 2026 review by Sarpong and coauthors describes some systems with limited human observational evidence, while many remain preclinical or at early feasibility stages. Studies often assess whether a sensor can measure its target rather than whether using it improves clinical diagnosis or patient outcomes.
That distinction is important when evaluating claims:

- 5 PACK UPGRADE SILVER ALGINATE DRESSING - It is a sterile, single-use dressing composed of calcium alginate and Silver-Infused Alginate agent
- HIGH ABSORBENT & CLEAN - The dressing absorbs wound exudate and release silver ions within the dressing in the presence of wound fluid to provides effeinfectionctive wound management within the dressing for up to seven days
- FORM AN OPTIMAL WOUND HEALING ENVIRONMENT - As wound exudate is absorbed, the alginate forms a gel (they didn't really stick to the wound & were comfortable), which assists in maintaining a moist environment for optimal wound healing, and allows intact removal.
- PAIN FREE DRESSING CHANGE- The alginate pad doesn't stick to the wound, and keeps the wound area clean. It can be cut and folded easily, use to fill the cavity, promote granulation growth
- SCOPE OF APPLICATION - Silver Alginate Dressing is indicated for the management of moderate to heavily exuding partial to full thickness wounds, including, postoperative wounds, trauma wounds, leg ulcers, pressure ulcers, diabetic ulcers, graft and donor sites. And it can use as first aid pad to help in minor abrasions, minor cuts, minor lacerations, minor scrapes, minor scalds and minor burns
- Sensor performance: Does the device detect or display the intended signal under the tested conditions?
- Clinical validation: Does the signal reliably identify infection in the intended patient group and wound setting?
- Clinical benefit: Does using the device improve decisions or patient outcomes?
Evidence at one level does not automatically establish the next. The 2026 review authors note: “Despite significant progress, clinical translation remains limited by challenges related to long-term biocompatibility, scalable manufacturing, and regulatory validation.”

The reviews describe an emerging research category, but they do not establish routine consumer availability of a dressing validated to detect wound infection early. Availability, validation, and regulatory status can differ by specific device and setting; the evidence summarized here does not identify a named consumer product that meets the title’s infection-sensing claim.

There are marketed dressings with other purposes that can be mistaken for this technology. FDA records describe securement dressings placed over vascular or percutaneous devices to anchor, cover, and protect an insertion site. Chlorhexidine-containing versions may be intended to reduce microbial colonization and catheter-related bloodstream infection risk. Those functions are not the same as sensing infection in a general wound.
For example, FDA’s 510(k) record identifies 3M Tegaderm CHG as a securement dressing and records a substantial-equivalence decision dated July 11, 2017. That regulatory record is not evidence that the product detects a wound infection signal.
What should a reader make of a sensor signal?
For any particular dressing, the useful questions are what it measures, how it reports a result, and what kind of testing supports its intended use. A color shift or electronic alert should be interpreted according to the device’s validated instructions and clinical context—not assumed to mean infection.
- Check whether the device is designed to sense infection-related changes or has a different purpose, such as covering, securing, or reducing microbial colonization.
- Look for the validation setting: laboratory or animal testing, human feasibility or observational use, or evidence tied to clinical diagnosis and outcomes.
- Determine whether a clinician is expected to interpret the reading and what follow-up the manufacturer’s instructions specify.
Those distinctions help separate a promising monitoring concept from a clinically established diagnostic tool.
