Yes, small amphibious robots can disturb wildlife or affect wetland habitat, but current evidence does not show that they routinely cause lasting harm. The closest freshwater field study observed individual birds moving out of a robot’s path; its authors could not quantify the effect. The risk depends on the robot’s propulsion, contact with plants or sediment, proximity to animals, and how often and where it operates.
What has been observed in the field?
The most directly relevant published field study tested SailMAV, a research vehicle that can sail on water and fly, on Lake Vrana in Croatia. In 2024, Lawson and colleagues reported 12 successful autonomous sailing missions covering 32.2 km in total. The routes included areas near waterbird flocks and reed-bed canals in a protected ornithological reserve.
The researchers saw the robot sail close to and sometimes through bird flocks. The only behavioral changes they observed were individual birds moving out of its path. They described the apparent effect as small, but said they could not quantify it and called for further study of how unmanned vehicles affect biodiversity. That is evidence of a possible short-term behavioral response—not proof that all birds were unaffected or that the robot caused no stress.

Nor does a surface-sailing robot represent every amphibious design: a vehicle with propellers, wheels, legs, or other parts that touch vegetation or the bottom may present different risks. How could a robot disturb animals or habitat?
Potential impacts depend on the design and deployment. A 2020 field-applications study of underwater unmanned vehicles describes concerns raised by water managers and operational issues, but does not quantify wildlife injury or wetland damage attributable to small amphibious robots. Read the field-applications study.
- Movement and proximity: A visible vehicle or close approach may cause birds or other animals to move away or change their activity. In the SailMAV study, individual birds moved out of the robot’s path, but the effect was not quantified.
- Sound and water motion: Propellers and other moving parts can create sound or turbulence. Those may affect animals and can also complicate acoustic monitoring. In the SailMAV study, underwater recordings picked up splashing over the hydrophone when the vehicle moved quickly, while surface recordings included some mechanical sound.
- Contact with plants or sediment: A vehicle can snag vegetation or lose maneuverability in dense growth. Contact with the bottom could disturb sediment or organisms. The 2020 study reports concerns about propellers being blocked by vegetation and vehicles contacting bottoms or other objects; it does not measure resulting habitat injury.
- Repeated activity: Frequent close passes, operation near nesting or resting animals, or repeated launches and recoveries may warrant extra caution. The sources do not quantify cumulative effects.
- Access at the shoreline: A mobile robot may reduce the need for people to enter difficult-to-reach bankside habitat. That potential benefit does not mean the robot itself causes no disturbance.
How to assess a design or deployment plan
There is no universally established safe distance, speed, sound level, or number of passes for operating these robots in wetlands. Compare the specific design and plan against site conditions rather than treating any one configuration as inherently harmless.

| What to assess | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Propulsion and sound | Does it use a propeller, pump-jet, vibrating fin, or sail? What sound and wake does it produce under the planned conditions? |
| Habitat contact | Does it travel only on the surface, or do wheels, legs, or other parts contact vegetation or the bottom? Can it maintain clearance from plants, sediment, and animals? |
| Wildlife exposure | How close will it come to animals, at what speed, for how long, and how many times? Can the route avoid or pause near wildlife? |
| Vegetation and maneuverability | Could it snag in reeds or shallow channels, block a propeller, or collide with objects? |
| Launch and recovery | Will people or equipment need to enter fragile bankside habitat, and can access be reduced? |
| Monitoring | Can operators record animal responses and collect baseline and post-operation observations? Would sound or turbidity measurements help answer a specific question? |
A hydrophone can measure underwater sound; it cannot by itself establish that animals were harmed. In the SailMAV study, researchers suspended a hydrophone 30 cm below the surface to manage drag and recording conditions. That is a study-specific setup, not a safety threshold.

Precautions for wetland managers
Before deploying a robot, assess the site and the species likely to be present. Where feasible, avoid sensitive locations or periods, use a route and propulsion setup that minimize contact, and monitor animal responses during operation. If animals repeatedly move away or another disturbance becomes apparent, stop or modify the deployment.

Small amphibious robots can plausibly disturb wildlife and affect habitat, particularly if they approach animals closely, create noise or turbulence, snag vegetation, or contact the bottom. A freshwater field study documented birds moving out of one sailing robot’s path, but could not quantify the response. The sources do not demonstrate routine lasting harm, nor do they establish that such harm never occurs.

Other research platforms illustrate the range of designs but do not fill this evidence gap: a 2026 Society for Science project abstract describes a sealed robot intended to measure pH and turbidity in shallow, muddy, vegetation-dense settings, while a 2012 conference contribution describes Aquapod, a small robot for subsurface water sampling. These project descriptions are not ecological impact assessments.
