A 2017 research team reported detecting whether urinary tract bacteria responded to antibiotics in under 30 minutes, measured from loading a urine sample to the diagnostic readout. The result came from a specialized microfluidic chip and microscope—not a consumer test—and the strongest clinical comparison covered ciprofloxacin susceptibility in 49 uropathogenic Escherichia coli isolates.
What the under-30-minute result means
The study demonstrated a rapid laboratory approach to antibiotic susceptibility testing (AST): it measured how bacteria grew after antibiotic exposure and compared that response with untreated bacteria. It did not directly visualize a resistance marker or identify a resistance gene. The authors described the finding as a proof of concept for determining whether a urinary tract infection was caused by resistant bacteria within 30 minutes of loading a urine sample. The 2017 PNAS paper is the source for that result.
The time depends on what is being counted. The paper reported bacterial response measurements in 3 to 11 minutes across nine UTI antibiotics, depending on the drug. Its under-30-minute figure included sample loading through diagnostic readout. Those are study measurements, not a promise that every organism, antibiotic, specimen, or clinical workflow will produce an answer on the same schedule.

How imaging detects a response before colonies appear
The custom microfluidic device had two rows of 2,000 cell traps. After bacteria from a dilute sample were captured, one row received antibiotic-free reference medium and the other received medium containing the antibiotic under assessment. Time-lapse phase-contrast images tracked cell extension. Researchers compared the treated cells’ normalized growth response with the untreated reference.

Because the readout was a change in growth behavior, the method did not have to wait for bacteria to multiply into visible colonies. The microscope was measuring a biological response to the drug, rather than looking for a visual feature that itself signified resistance.
What the clinical-isolate comparison established
For its blinded clinical-isolate comparison, the team classified ciprofloxacin susceptibility in 49 uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) isolates. All 49 classifications agreed with the hospital’s disk-diffusion results within 10 minutes. A 50th collected isolate did not grow during preparation and was excluded.

This is complete agreement in that study set, not a population-wide sensitivity or specificity guarantee. The comparison was specifically for ciprofloxacin and UPEC; testing response times across nine antibiotics does not mean every organism–drug combination received the same clinical validation. The paper also reported supplementary work involving additional UTI pathogens, but that does not broaden the 49-isolate comparison.

How it compares with a later microscopy approach
A separate 2024 study described a multipad agarose plate method for measuring minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) from microcolony growth rates. Its authors reported results within three hours of antibiotic incubation under their study conditions, using E. coli K-12 MG1655 monocultures and a nine-antibiotic test set. This was a distinct laboratory method, not a replication of the 2017 microfluidic-chip result. The Journal of the Royal Society Interface paper describes that approach.

Headline times are only comparable when the timing definition, specimen and organism, antibiotic panel, interpretation method, sample size, comparator, and workflow are also considered.

The 2017 experiment required a specialized microfluidic chip, fluid handling, microscopy, and image analysis. It was not an off-the-shelf home test, and a research result does not establish routine clinical deployment or suitability for every patient.

There is a commercial translation associated with Sysmex Astrego and the PA-100 AST System. Sysmex Astrego’s technology page says its AST technology is based on microfluidics and image-analysis methods developed at Uppsala University. A Uppsala University announcement dated March 27, 2026 describes translation to the fully automated PA-100 system. Neither source, as cited here, establishes current regulatory authorization or market availability in every jurisdiction.
For historical context, a Uppsala University article dated November 15, 2022 said the test was expected to launch. That is a past expectation, not confirmation of present availability. Patients and clinicians should rely on local clinical laboratories and current jurisdiction-specific product information rather than infer access from the research result or development announcements.
