Silencing an AirTag may make it harder to find by sound, but it is not the same as disabling the tracker—and the available evidence does not show that a silent AirTag is automatically invisible to phone alerts. AirTags can be misused for stalking or abuse, while unwanted-tracking alerts and locating features have limits. If you think a tracker is following you, take the alert seriously and consider your safety before changing settings, confronting anyone or removing the device.
What “silencing” an AirTag does—and does not—mean
People use “silencing” to mean different things: stopping an AirTag from making a sound, or disabling it so it no longer reports its location. Those are not interchangeable. Apple’s support instructions explain how to disable an AirTag through on-screen instructions, but do not document every way someone might physically mute its speaker. The available guidance does not establish that a muted speaker disables tracking, nor that muting the speaker alone prevents a compatible phone from detecting the tracker.
So the title’s causal claim needs qualification: a silenced AirTag could be harder to locate by sound, but the available evidence does not establish that silencing invariably enables stalking, or quantify how often AirTags are used in domestic abuse. A phone alert, a sound from the tracker and the tracker’s ability to send location updates are separate things.
How unwanted-tracking alerts work
Apple says an alert may appear when an AirTag or other supported tracker is separated from its owner and is seen moving with someone over time. A sound may also be emitted. Alerts are subject to device compatibility, software versions, settings and detection conditions; they should not be treated as a guarantee that every tracker will be detected promptly.

- Apple’s support guidance lists iOS or iPadOS 14.5 as the minimum for its tracking notifications, and iOS or iPadOS 17.5 or later for compatible Bluetooth trackers.
- For Apple notifications, its checklist calls for Location Services and Significant Locations to be on, Bluetooth to be on, Tracking Notifications to be enabled, and Airplane Mode to be off.
- In May 2024, Apple and Google announced cross-platform unwanted-tracker alerts: Apple said its implementation was in iOS 17.5, while Google said its was launching on Android 6.0 and later. Their announcement is a dated baseline, not a guarantee that all phone-and-tracker combinations offer identical features.
For current device and feature availability, consult Apple’s Detect unwanted trackers support guidance and the relevant Android settings or support information. A tracker alert is a reason to assess what is happening, not proof by itself that a particular person is stalking you. A borrowed item or another benign explanation may account for an alert; if you remain concerned, treat the situation seriously.
If your phone says an AirTag is moving with you
Choose a response based on both immediate safety and what you need to preserve. If you feel in immediate danger, move to a safer place and contact local emergency services. You do not have to confront the person you suspect or investigate alone.

Disable the AirTag—not just phone settings—to stop updates
Apple says turning off Bluetooth, Location Services or Find My on your phone does not stop the AirTag owner from receiving location updates. To stop updates, the tracker itself must be disabled. Apple’s support instructions say to follow the alert’s “Instructions to Disable” steps for an AirTag. Read those instructions on your device because the available steps may depend on the device and software you are using.

Disabling has a consequential trade-off: Apple says the owner will no longer get current-location updates, but you will also no longer receive unwanted-tracking alerts about that item. If alert history or further documentation matters, consider recording what is available before proceeding, provided doing so is safe. Do not assume that changing your phone’s settings has disabled the tracker.

Document an item without assuming it identifies the owner
Apple says an NFC-capable smartphone can scan an AirTag found by the user. The page that appears can show the AirTag’s serial number and the last four digits of the phone number used to register it. Apple’s instructions say you can take a screenshot to document that information.
Those details do not necessarily reveal a person’s full identity. Apple says law enforcement can request available information from Apple and may need the device and its serial number; that is not a promise that information will be available or that a request will identify someone. Avoid handling or keeping an item if doing so could put you at risk.

Why domestic-abuse safety planning matters
Apple’s Get Safe guide, published in October 2024, warns: “IMPORTANT: Before making changes or deleting information, consider potential impacts to your safety and privacy.” Its guidance for people considering leaving an unsafe relationship addresses device and account access, location and unwanted trackers, and points readers toward advocacy organizations. The practical point is that a technical fix may have safety consequences in a particular relationship. An abrupt change, a confrontation or an account change should not be treated as universally safe advice.

For jurisdiction-specific context, the NSW Government reported in 2026 that 82 per cent of offenders charged by the NSW Police Force with unlawfully using a tracking device were committing domestic violence offences during 2010–2023. This is a statistic about charged offenders in New South Wales and that offence category—not the prevalence of AirTag misuse, all domestic abuse or all tracking.

- Elsewhere: Contact a local specialist service or emergency services as appropriate. Use a device and account you believe are safe if you need to look for support.

What independent testing says about alert and locating limits
A 2025 USENIX Security paper by Dańiel Gerhardt, Matthias Fassl, Carolyn Guthoff, Adrian Dabrowski and Katharina Krombholz evaluated unwanted-tracking notifications and tracker-locating features. Its alert-reliability evaluation included 50 fully informed participants; a separate deception study involved 19 participants, alongside a hidden-tracker locating task.
In those studies, alerts were significantly more reliable and timely on iOS than Android. The researchers also found that effective and safe responses depended on prior knowledge or awareness of technology-facilitated abuse; some participants disregarded unobtrusive warnings, and the Find My interface made locating a tracker harder than necessary. They recommended clearer, more urgent alerts and guided identification and disablement. This is evidence from one 2025 study, not a universal test of every current phone, tracker or real-world case.

What to remember when a tracker alert appears
- A silent speaker and a disabled tracker are different states; do not assume that muting alone stops location updates.
- Alerts depend on compatible devices, software, settings and detection conditions, so their presence or absence cannot settle every question about tracking.
- Apple says disabling an AirTag stops its owner’s current-location updates, but also stops unwanted-tracking alerts about that item.
- If a change could affect your safety, consider documenting available details and contacting a trusted person or specialist service before acting, when it is safe to do so.
