Shortcut can be a useful Excel assistant, especially for interactive spreadsheet work and financial modeling, but it is not one product with one level of access. Its Excel add-in works on the workbook open in Excel, while its desktop and command-line tools, browser app, and API run in different environments. Choose based on where your files live, whether you need VBA or desktop Excel features, and whether a person needs to supervise the work.
What is Shortcut AI for Excel?
Shortcut describes its product as an AI agent for spreadsheet work, available as an Excel add-in, a command-line interface (CLI) and desktop app, a web app, and a Platform API. The forms share an agent, but they do not share the same access to workbooks or the computer they run on. Shortcut’s product overview positions the add-in for interactive work in an open workbook, local desktop tools for local files and desktop Excel workflows, the web app for browser-based work, and the API for server-side or batch tasks.
The add-in can help with formulas, formatting, charts, and analysis in Excel, according to Shortcut’s documentation. It is designed to work on the workbook in front of you, so you can review its changes and continue saving and sharing through Excel. That makes it a more natural fit for someone collaborating with an agent while working in a spreadsheet than for someone who needs unattended access to a collection of local files.
What can the Excel add-in access?
The add-in opens as a panel in Microsoft Excel and works with the open workbook through Microsoft’s Office add-in interface. Shortcut describes that access as structured rather than unrestricted: the add-in does not freely browse the computer, launch programs, search every file in a cloud-storage account, or control every desktop Excel feature. Macros and VBA
The add-in cannot run VBA. A macro-enabled workbook keeps its macros in Excel, but copies exported for processing are macro-free .xlsx files. If a task depends on running macros or automating desktop Excel features, Shortcut points users to its CLI and desktop app on Windows rather than the add-in. The CLI and desktop guide describes those options.
Excel compatibility
The add-in requires a supported Excel version with Microsoft’s ExcelApi 1.17 feature set. Compatibility may vary by Excel version and platform, so confirm the current requirements in Shortcut’s documentation before relying on it in a particular deployment.

How strong is the evidence that Shortcut improves spreadsheet work?
Shortcut publishes favorable performance figures, but the available figures are vendor-reported rather than independent validation. Treat them as claims about the stated evaluations and customer examples, not guarantees for your workbook or workflow.

- Benchmark: In July 2026, Shortcut reported scores of 76% for Shortcut, 66% for Claude for Excel, and 59% for Microsoft Copilot. Shortcut says its evaluation covered 20 real-world tasks in finance, private equity, and hedge funds, with three runs per task. The figures and methodology are reported by Shortcut on its homepage; the cited material does not establish independent validation.
- Cost within that evaluation: Shortcut reported average token expenditure of $5.09 per completed finance task for Shortcut and $8.17 for Claude for Excel, using the same tasks in its 20-task internal evaluation. This is not a general software price comparison or a prediction of what a user will spend.
- Customer outcome: Shortcut’s homepage reports 25–35% efficiency gains in modeling review during a 45-day TresVista pilot, with some workflows 5x faster. The underlying study is not included in the cited material.
- Model-building example: The same homepage reports that investment banking teams built a full LBO model with more than 400 linked formulas in 45 minutes, compared with about five hours by hand. This is vendor-reported customer evidence, not a controlled independent study.
Those numbers may be useful context if your work resembles the stated finance tasks, but they do not establish how Shortcut will perform on another spreadsheet, industry, or set of instructions. Shortcut also provides tutorials that can help you understand its documented workflows.
Should you use the add-in or the desktop app?
Start with the workbook and the job, not the AI label. Use the add-in if you want help in the workbook already open in Excel and can work within its supported add-in access. Consider the CLI or desktop app if the task needs local files, synced folders, local tools, VBA, or desktop Excel automation on Windows. Choose the web app for browser-based spreadsheet work that does not need desktop access, or the API when files can be sent to a cloud workflow that should run unattended.

Is Shortcut your new best friend in Excel?
It could be a useful assistant if your workflow matches the right version—particularly interactive spreadsheet work in an open workbook or finance modeling where an agent can help with repetitive construction and review. The Excel add-in is not a general-purpose desktop controller, and its documented limits matter for macros, local files, and unsupported Excel features. The published performance figures are encouraging vendor claims, not independent evidence that Shortcut will outperform alternatives on your own work.
