Seaweed-derived alginate can be formed into fibres, but the evidence available does not establish commercially available jackets made from “super long” seaweed fibres. The phrase “growing fibres” is misleading here: the documented processes extract alginate from seaweed or form alginate material from a solution. A small biofabric experiment and a designer’s waterproofing research show promising directions, not a finished, jacket-grade textile.
What “seaweed fibre” means
Alginate is a polymer derived from seaweed. It can be processed into fibre, but that does not mean a finished textile grows directly in the seaweed or that every alginate sample is suitable for clothing. Fibre formation and jacket construction are separate material and manufacturing challenges.
A 1978 US patent describes one route: mill and wash seaweed, treat it with alkali and water to make a crude alginate solution, then extrude the solution through a spinneret into aqueous calcium chloride. Calcium ions cause water-insoluble calcium alginate to precipitate in fibrous form. The patent concerns alginate fibres used to make paper sheets; it is evidence of a fibre-forming process, not proof of modern, garment-scale production or of unusually long fibres. What the seaweed biofabric experiment demonstrates
Science Buddies’ 2023 activity makes small alginate biofabric samples. Each recipe combines 4 g sodium alginate with 200 mL liquid, while varying glycerin: one sample uses 8 g, another 4 g, and a third none. The procedure specifies a 10% calcium chloride solution made from 10 g calcium chloride in 100 mL water. It sprays that solution onto an alginate mixture and fabric support, forming a membrane-like calcium alginate layer. These are recipe quantities, not measured jacket-performance results. How to compare sample recipes
For a useful prototype comparison, keep the support fabric and application method consistent, then assess each sample for tensile strength, flexibility and bending, response to twisting, sewability, drying shrinkage, and adhesion to its backing. Record observations under the same conditions. The activity does not provide jacket-grade pass/fail thresholds, so these comparisons can show how recipe changes affect samples—not whether a material will withstand outdoor wear.
How to make a small sample
The activity is a hands-on prototype, not a method for producing a complete jacket. Follow the full Science Buddies procedure for preparation and handling details.

- PREMIUM QUALITY FABRIC: Made of high quality and durable waterproof polyester fabric with internal lining. Any random splashes of liquid/food can be easily wiped off with a damp cloth. Easy to clean
- Size: 14.6*11.2*17 inches
- FINE CRAFTSMANSHIP: Neat stitching will effectively extend the life of the blender/coffee maker. We recommend it to anyone who wants to keep their kitchen aids dust-free
- Prepare separate alginate mixtures using 4 g sodium alginate in 200 mL liquid. Use the activity’s three glycerin amounts—8 g, 4 g, or 0 g—to make the comparison samples.
- Make the specified calcium chloride solution by dissolving 10 g calcium chloride in 100 mL water.
- Apply the mixture to a fabric support and spray with the calcium chloride solution as directed, forming a membrane-like layer.
- Let the samples dry as directed, then compare their strength, bending and twisting response, sewability, shrinkage, and adhesion.
The listed materials include sodium alginate, calcium chloride, a fabric support such as canvas, a wooden embroidery hoop, an immersion blender, a spray bottle, and testing tools. This is a small-scale experiment; its ingredients and equipment do not establish a route to manufacturing a wearable jacket.

What has been explored for outdoor clothing
Falmouth University’s 11 July 2025 profile describes textile designer Alice Selwood’s postgraduate exploration of seaweed natural polymer for waterproofing outdoor clothing. It reports research and her ambition to continue developing processes toward larger-scale manufacturing. It does not report a commercially launched jacket, a validated durability result, or a garment made from long alginate fibres. Falmouth University’s profile of Alice Selwood

Selwood also emphasizes that sustainability involves supply-chain traceability, not just the material itself: “The key to sustainable production is traceability; understanding where your fabric and fashion comes from – all the way back to the farmer that grew the cotton – is just as important as the maker who sews on the buttons, and the sales tactics used to sell the garment.”

Turning an alginate solution into fibre establishes only one step. A jacket material also needs to be processed into a usable textile and perform in its intended conditions. A Chinese patent describes challenges in seaweed-fibre processing, including wet strength, dyeing, and demanding spinning and weaving. Those points are assertions in patent literature, not independently verified performance data for a particular jacket fabric. CN102505270A (2012)

No verified fibre length described as “super long,” commercial-market statistic, or controlled jacket-durability result is established by these sources. The defensible conclusion is narrower: alginate can be made into fibres, sample biofabrics can be prototyped, and seaweed-derived materials have been explored for outdoor-apparel waterproofing. Those facts do not yet demonstrate a commercially available jacket built from long seaweed fibres.
