Partly. Samsung widgets can put routine information and a few shortcuts on your home or lock screen so you don’t have to open a separate app for every glance. But Samsung’s official One UI 9 material does not show that widgets can replace specific productivity apps, and it does not measure any gain in output. Whether this works for you depends on which apps you use, which features your phone supports, and what those apps do that a widget cannot.
Where One UI 9 stands right now
Samsung announced on September 16, 2026 that the official One UI 9 rollout had begun with the Galaxy S26 Ultra, S26+, and S26. The company says One UI 9 had earlier debuted on the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Z Fold8, and Z Flip8, and that the update will reach other Galaxy devices gradually. Samsung’s release does not give a schedule for individual models, so the practical answer to “is my phone getting it?” depends on your exact model, market, and carrier. Check under Settings > Software update on your device.

Widgets are not new in One UI 9
Placing widgets on the home and lock screens is an established part of One UI. Samsung’s official One UI feature page, accessed October 7, 2026, describes that customization, but its relevant content covers One UI 8.5, not One UI 9. If you read “widgets” as a One UI 9 feature, you are mixing two things: the widget workflow that already exists, and a short list of One UI 9 changes that sit on top of it.

The underlying widget workflow
This is the part that works the same way across recent One UI versions, although menu labels can shift by model and software build:

- Long-press an empty area of the home screen.
- Tap Widgets.
- Choose a widget, then place it where you want it and resize it if the option appears.
- Repeat on the lock screen if your device offers lock-screen widgets.
The One UI 9 changes Samsung highlights
Samsung’s September 16 release names a few features that are relevant to a widget-first setup:
- Editable Now Brief cards. You can change which cards appear in the Now Brief summary.
- Context-aware Now Nudge suggestions. These are prompts that Samsung says adapt to context.
- Document scanning and a structured Voice Recorder summary, which reduce trips into other apps for those specific jobs.
Two conditions apply. Samsung says some Now Brief data requires app access or an internet connection, and that Personal Data Intelligence must be turned on. If either is off, the cards you expect may be missing or incomplete.

Which routine tasks widgets can cover
Widgets work best for information you check repeatedly and for actions that take one tap to start. They are weaker for tasks that need a full editing surface, long documents, or features that exist only inside the app. A practical way to sort your own workflow is below. This is an editorial framework, not a measured result.
- Good widget candidates: calendar glances, upcoming tasks, reminders, a short summary of the day, and shortcuts that open the next step quickly.
- Keep the app: writing or spreadsheet editing, file management, team comments and sharing, offline storage you rely on, and any feature the widget does not expose.
- Test carefully: anything that depends on notifications, sync timing, or data that only appears when the underlying app has permission to access it.
How to test the swap on your own phone
If you want to try a widget-first setup, run it as a trial rather than deleting apps on day one.

- Confirm your model is on One UI 9 under Settings > Software update.
- Turn on Personal Data Intelligence if you want Now Brief and Now Nudge to work.
- List each app you think you could replace and the single task you use it for.
- For each task, add the matching widget or shortcut and keep the app installed for at least a week.
- Record how often you still open the app, how many taps or app switches the task takes, and whether the widget information was current when you needed it.
- Remove an app only if the widget covered the task without a workaround.
What “got more done” would need to mean
A claim that a change made you more productive is only checkable if it says which apps were replaced, how long the test lasted, and what was measured. Official One UI 9 material does not provide a productivity figure, and no independent test in the sources reviewed here measures output for this setup. A personal account of this kind is best read as reported experience. It can be useful for ideas, but it is not evidence that the same change will produce the same result on another phone.
The measures that matter are task coverage (how many of your app-based tasks the widget actually handles), friction (taps and app switches per task), freshness (whether widget data was up to date), setup effort, and whether a standalone app still provides a feature you cannot do without.

Limits and trade-offs
- Availability is uneven. Rollout started with specific Galaxy models and continues gradually. Market and carrier can also affect timing.
- Widgets depend on the underlying app. If an app changes its data or permissions, the widget can lose information.
- Some features need connectivity or permissions. Now Brief content that relies on app access or the internet will not appear otherwise.
- A widget is a surface, not a workspace. It shows and triggers; it rarely replaces the full editing environment.
For most readers, the realistic outcome is fewer app openings for routine checks, not a clean swap of four apps. Start with the phone you already have, confirm it supports One UI 9, and judge the change on your own task list.
