Yes, crops and solar panels can share land, but the evidence here is a single-season proof of concept—not a demonstration that rose-tinted panels are ready for broad farm use. In a 2024 Swedish trial, broccoli grown beneath semi-transparent magenta cadmium telluride (CdTe) panels had a similar reported harvest to broccoli in full sun, but took 25 days longer to mature.

What the rose-tinted solar panel study tested

Published in Cell Reports Physical Science on 2 October 2026, the study evaluated broccoli cultivation with semi-transparent colored CdTe thin-film photovoltaic panels. Researchers Silvia Ma Lu and colleagues ran the experiment at Kärrbo Prästgård farm in Sweden during the 2024 growing season. The Cell Press announcement describes two 20 m by 20 m systems, one with 50% transparency and one with 70% transparency, alongside a full-sun comparison.

The panels consist of photovoltaic strips embedded across glass. Changing the strips’ spacing or density changes how much light passes through to plants and how much the cells intercept to generate electricity. The setup therefore tests a trade-off: giving crops more light can mean intercepting less for power generation, while denser strips can restrict crop light.

How broccoli performed beneath the panels

Harvest and time to maturity

The broccoli under both panel configurations had similar reported harvest outcomes to the full-sun comparison, but reached maturity 25 days later. That delay matters: a similar harvest mass does not mean the crop took the same time to produce, or that the same result would hold for other crops, sites, or seasons.

There is useful development context, but it is preliminary. A two-year conference abstract in the Mälardalen University DiVA repository reports significantly lower broccoli yield under the panels in 2023, when the structure did not provide enough light. Raising the structures in 2024 increased light availability; yield differences that year were not statistically significant. The 2023 abstract is not the same level of evidence as the published 2026 study, but it illustrates why mounting height and light access can affect results.

Radiation-use efficiency is not a yield increase

The study reported radiation-use efficiency—how effectively plants use the light they receive—at 4.5 times the full-sun comparison under the 50%-transparency system and 2.8 times under the 70%-transparency system. These figures do not mean that broccoli yield was 4.5 or 2.8 times higher. The harvest result was reported as similar to the full-sun comparison, with later maturity beneath the panels.

How much electricity did the panels generate?

The Cell Press announcement estimates 447.6 kWh of generation for the 50%-transparency system over the growing period. Separately, a ScienceAlert report scales output to about 224.7 MWh per hectare over the growing period and says that is roughly 100 MWh/ha below conventional panels of similar size. These are differently expressed estimates; the reporting available here does not provide enough detail to independently reconcile their calculation bases.

The key comparison is not simply whether a panel generates electricity or a crop grows beneath it. A fair assessment needs to consider crop yield and timing, electricity per panel area, the light spectrum and total light reaching plants, land-use productivity, farm access, local climate, crop type, and the economics of both outputs. This trial reports some of those dimensions, but does not establish a universal winner among solar designs.

Does the magenta color turn green light into electricity?

No. In the tested arrangement, the magenta filter transmits red and blue wavelengths and filters green light. The CdTe strips generate electricity; the green light blocked by the filter was not captured by those cells. The glass could in principle be neutral-colored: magenta was the glazing selected for the experiment, originally intended for building design. The color should not be mistaken for a mechanism that converts otherwise unused green light into power.

The experiment also does not isolate whether the crop response came from the spectral filter, reduced total light, or other conditions. ScienceAlert notes that the greenhouse effect from placing glass above the crop was not accounted for in the reported interpretation. The results therefore do not show that magenta glazing itself caused the crop outcome.

Is this ready for farms or greenhouses?

Not for broad deployment on the strength of this trial alone. The result is specific to broccoli, one Swedish site, one reported 2024 growing season, and the tested panel configurations. The researchers say further validation across growing seasons and system configurations is needed. A Phys.org report relays the study author’s view that similar configurations may currently suit smaller settings such as community gardens or greenhouse roofs rather than immediate installation over large agricultural areas.

For a farm or greenhouse operator, the practical questions are whether the structure preserves acceptable crop yield and timing, produces worthwhile electricity, and allows ordinary access and work. Panel density and mounting height are part of that decision, not minor engineering details: they affect the balance of light available to crops and cells.

One reported economic comparison puts the possible additional broccoli needed to offset the value of lost electricity at 1.2–3.2 tonnes per hectare, depending on electricity and broccoli prices. This is an expert’s conditional calculation, not a measured yield increase or a generally applicable break-even point. Actual economics would depend on local prices, the specific system, crop performance, and operating costs.

What the trial establishes—and what it does not

  • Established: In the 2024 Swedish trial, broccoli grew under two semi-transparent magenta CdTe configurations; harvest outcomes were reported as similar to full sun, with maturity 25 days later.
  • Established: The systems generated electricity, and the study reported different radiation-use-efficiency factors for the two transparency configurations.
  • Not established: That magenta panels increase broccoli yield, convert filtered green light into electricity, or perform similarly with other crops and in other climates.
  • Not established: That the design is commercially competitive or ready for large-scale agricultural use. That requires broader crop, season, configuration, and economic comparisons.
