A 2020 laboratory study found a chemical pathway by which wastewater treatment can turn certain drugs, including fluoxetine (Prozac) and methamphetamine, into precursors of chloropicrin, a disinfection byproduct. It did not show that these drugs caused harmful levels of chloropicrin in ordinary tap water or that anyone was exposed to a health risk through this pathway.
What the study found
In a 2020 study published in Environmental Science & Technology, University of Southern California researchers Jiaming Lily Shi and Daniel L. McCurry examined how ozone treatment affects N-methylamine drugs in wastewater. The drugs studied included fluoxetine, the generic name for Prozac, and methamphetamine, along with other compounds in the chemical class.
The researchers found that ozonation could form nitromethane from the tested N-methylamine drugs. In laboratory reactions, nitromethane formation was typically greater than 50% yield. That figure describes the reaction yield under the study conditions; it is not a measurement of drug levels, nitromethane concentration, or chloropicrin in drinking water. How the proposed treatment pathway works
- Ozonation: Ozone treatment of wastewater can transform certain N-methylamine compounds into nitromethane.
- Chlorination: If chlorination follows, nitromethane can react to form chloropicrin, also called nitrochloroform.
The study also found that nitromethane formed in ozonated wastewater effluent accounted for most—and in one tested case, all—of the subsequent chloropicrin formation. This supports nitromethane as an intermediate in the treatment process, not the claim that a particular drug was the source of a measured contaminant in a public water supply.

What this does—and does not—say about tap water
The work concerns a plausible chemical mechanism in wastewater treatment and potable-reuse contexts, including ozone and biologically active carbon treatment systems. It does not establish that Prozac or methamphetamine caused chloropicrin in finished tap water, quantify consumer exposure, or demonstrate a health effect from this pathway. Chemistry World likewise noted that the laboratory findings did not directly demonstrate that drugs were the source of nitromethane in real wastewater. The sources documenting this study do not provide a population exposure estimate or health-outcome statistic for this pathway, nor do they assess the water at a named utility. A local safety question therefore requires current information from the relevant water utility and public-health or environmental regulator; this study alone cannot answer it.

What treatment options the study points toward
The authors called for investigation of nitromethane’s fate during water reuse and ways to control it. Chemistry World described biologically active filtration as a promising research direction, while noting treatment tradeoffs. That is not a universal operating recommendation, proof of a deployed solution, or evidence that a household filter addresses this particular pathway.
The study does not validate consumer test kits or home water-treatment products for detecting or removing chloropicrin formed through this process. It provides no basis for buying a filter or test kit on the assumption that a household is affected.
