Yes, a specially designed film can passively reject heat by reflecting sunlight and emitting thermal energy toward the sky. Researchers have demonstrated roll-to-roll production and promising tests, including a model-house study, but the evidence does not establish that the exact film is a readily available home product or that it will deliver a particular result in your house.
How the film cools without power
Daytime radiative cooling relies on two optical properties: a surface must reflect much of the incoming sunlight, while emitting thermal infrared radiation through the atmosphere’s relatively transparent 8–13-micrometre band. Some of that energy can then escape toward space. The surface does not need electricity to radiate heat.
The 2017 hybrid film combined a thin silver reflector with silica-glass microspheres dispersed in transparent polymethylpentene polymer. Much of the sunlight passed through the polymer and reflected off the silver; the microspheres helped the material emit in the mid-infrared. This selective approach differs from simply painting a roof white. Chemistry World’s 2017 report describes the design and its demonstration.
What researchers have demonstrated
The results below concern different designs and test arrangements. Their cooling-power figures are not directly comparable: the materials, conditions and measurement methods differ.

What these results mean for a home
A material surface below ambient temperature is not the same thing as an air conditioner. These results do not show that the film can maintain any chosen indoor temperature, replace mechanical cooling in all conditions, or deliver a known utility-bill reduction. The model-house findings are promising, but they come from one experimental setup; they do not establish performance for a particular house, installation details, durability or building-code status.
Outdoor field results also answer a narrower question than home performance. The Phoenix study measured cooling effects at a modified park shelter. Its results support the potential of radiative-cooling infrastructure in that setting, but do not quantify residential energy savings.

Weather, sky exposure and season matter
Performance depends on the optical design, access to the sky and local conditions. Clouds reduce the effectiveness described for the 2017 film. A field investigation under Hong Kong’s climate found that the different passive-cooler designs it tested did not provide daytime cooling in the examined weather, although some configurations cooled at night. This is a climate-related caution, not a direct test of the 2017 film. The Hong Kong field investigation reports those findings.
Seasonal control matters too: a roof that rejects heat in summer could be undesirable when heating is needed. Ronggui Yang, a researcher and mechanical engineer quoted in the 2017 report, warned: “You can’t just put this material directly on the roof because you don’t want to cool your house on a cold day in winter.” A practical roof system would need to account for when cooling is beneficial rather than assume that more heat rejection is always better.

Can you buy the film, and what can you use instead?
The cited reports document research films and demonstrations, but do not verify a generally available consumer roll of the exact film described in 2017. They also do not establish a supplier, current listing, installation method or product certification for a home installation.
A conventional cool roof is a separate, more established category: it typically uses a light-colored surface with high solar reflectance and thermal emittance to lower roof temperatures and reduce cooling load. It should not be mistaken for a selective radiative-cooling metafilm. For that adjacent category, “white elastomeric roof coating” is a useful search phrase; check that any product and installation are appropriate for your roof. What to check before considering a roof-cooling material
- Identify the product category. Confirm whether a claim concerns a selective radiative film or a conventional reflective coating.
- Ask what was measured. Surface temperature, indoor air temperature, heat flow and cooling power are different outcomes; a result for one does not automatically establish another.
- Match the evidence to the setting. A lab thermal test, model house and outdoor shade structure provide different kinds of evidence, and none alone predicts performance in every home.
- Consider climate and season. Sky exposure, clouds and the need for winter heating affect whether additional heat rejection is useful.
- Verify product-specific details. For a real installation, seek documentation for the exact product, its intended roof assembly, local requirements and maintenance. The cited research does not supply those details for a consumer version of the 2017 film.
