Power over Cable (PoC) is a broad phrase for sending electrical power through a cable, but it does not name one universal, interoperable standard. To know what a PoC product can do, you need to identify its cable, protocol and compatible equipment. Standards-based examples include Power over Ethernet (PoE) and Power over Data Lines (PoDL); “PoC” may instead refer to a vendor-specific system.
What is Power over Cable?
The NFPA electrical data summit workshop describes power-over-communications-cable technologies as “a general term for technologies that enable network cables to carry electrical power.” In that broad sense, Power over Cable is an umbrella term, not a specification that by itself tells you a system’s voltage, wattage, distance or compatibility.
The workshop distinguishes named technologies such as PoE and PoDL from Power over Cable systems it describes as non-standardized or proprietary. Because vendors may use PoC for particular implementations, the label alone is not enough to determine how a device works or whether it will work with another manufacturer’s equipment. How does PoC differ from PoE, PoDL and PoH?
These terms refer to different approaches to carrying power through communications cabling. They are not interchangeable names for a single electrical limit or interface.

| Term | What it refers to | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| PoC | Power over Cable; in the NFPA workshop’s usage, non-standardized or proprietary systems. | Check the specific vendor implementation, cable, source, receiver and electrical specifications. |
| PoE | Power over Ethernet, a standards-based way to deliver power over compatible Ethernet cabling. | Match the network source and powered endpoint to the supported PoE specification and power requirements. |
| PoDL | Power over Data Lines, an IEEE approach for single-pair data lines. | Confirm that both the port and the connected equipment support the required PoDL implementation. |
| PoH | Power over HDBaseT. | The HDBaseT Alliance describes PoH as based on IEEE 802.3at with modifications and reports up to 100 W over four Ethernet cable pairs. That figure applies to the Alliance’s PoH description, not to PoC generally. HDBaseT Alliance introduction to PoH |
The NFPA workshop also lists PoE+, PoE++, and Cisco Universal Power over Ethernet (UPoE) among communications-cable powering approaches. Their names identify particular approaches; “PoC” alone does not tell you which one, if any, a product uses. ATIS Protection Engineers Group presentation, March 24, 2022
Can one cable carry both power and data?
Yes. In the familiar Ethernet example, compatible equipment can send power and data over the same network cable to a powered endpoint. That can remove the need for a separate power connection at the endpoint, though it does not guarantee lower installation cost or eliminate other wiring needs.

- EXTEND YOUR ETHERNET CONNECTION THROUGH YOUR ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - This device is meant for individuals that are not able to extend their Ethernet connections where routers or range extenders do not work. Speed cannot exceed your internet plan’s limit.
- HOMEPLUG AV2 - Delivers AV2000 powerline speeds over existing electrical wiring, extending home network wired connectivity by up to 750ft through thick walls and other barriers. Ideal for multi-story homes, basements, attics, and garages.
- CHECK BEFORE YOU BUY - Adapters must be plugged directly into wall outlets on the same electrical circuit. Does not work with power strips, surge protectors, or extension cords. Place away from large appliances, such as washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners.
- ADVISORY - Performance may be limited or blocked in homes with AFCI breakers, which are standard in many homes built after 2000. Powerline may also not work with routers or gateways using modified, open-source (e.g., DD-WRT), or non-standard firmware.
- 2 GIGABIT PORTS - Provides a secure wired network for connected devices, such as desktops, smart TVs, game consoles, and more. Ethernet cables are included. Tip: Expand connections with an Ethernet switch (sold separately).
PoDL is a named single-pair data-line approach. The IEC TS 63444:2026 catalog listing describes Ethernet-SPE ports as either PoDL-capable or data-only, so a single-pair Ethernet connection should not be assumed to provide power just because it carries data. IEC TS 63444:2026 catalog listing
Why use power over communications cabling?
The NFPA workshop identifies potential benefits: combining power and data on one cable, easier installation, avoiding AC outlets at the device, and potentially lower cost than installing traditional power wiring. It cites IP cameras and wireless hotspots as examples where flexible equipment placement may help. These are possible advantages, not guaranteed savings or outcomes for every installation. What should you check before choosing PoC equipment?
Start with the actual interface and specifications rather than the product label. For a standards-based Ethernet installation, a PoE switch or injector may be appropriate only if it matches the powered device’s supported standard and power needs. A generic PoC adapter is not automatically compatible with PoE equipment.
- Cable and interface: Identify whether the connection uses multi-pair Ethernet, single-pair Ethernet, HDBaseT, coax or a proprietary cable arrangement.
- Standard and compatibility: Check whether the system follows a named standard or a vendor-specific design, and verify that the source and receiving device are designed to work together.
- Power requirements: Confirm the supported power specification or class for both ends. Do not infer voltage or wattage from “PoC.”
- Installation conditions: Check cable type and length, existing infrastructure, and the electrical, fire and safety requirements that apply to the installation.
- Data capability: Verify whether the connection carries communications data alongside power or uses a separate arrangement.
Without the exact implementation, there is no universal PoC voltage, wattage or cable-distance limit to apply. The relevant limits and safety requirements must come from the applicable product specifications and standard.
