Owning a cat may bring comfort and meaning to some people, but current research does not show that cat ownership reliably improves mental health. Studies report mixed associations across depression, loneliness, social isolation and psychosis-related outcomes. They also cannot establish that getting a cat causes a change in any one person’s mental health.
What the research can—and cannot—show
Studies can describe patterns among the people they examined. They cannot, on their own, tell us whether adopting a cat will improve an individual’s well-being or whether cat ownership caused an observed difference. Cat owners and non-owners may differ in other ways that also affect mental health, and studies do not all measure the same outcomes or define animal exposure the same way.
It is also important to distinguish a person’s experience of comfort from a measured clinical outcome. Someone may find a cat’s company reassuring; that experience is valid, but it does not establish that cats treat depression, anxiety, loneliness or psychosis-related conditions.
What studies have found by outcome
Depression
A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis reported a small association between cat ownership and depression compared with having no pet: odds ratio (OR) 1.06 (95% confidence interval [CI] 1.02–1.09). In a sensitivity analysis that excluded one study, the estimate was OR 1.06 (95% CI 0.999–1.12), which could be statistically non-significant. The result is uncertain and observational; it does not show that cats cause depression or that having a cat treats it. Read the 2025 meta-analysis in Annals of General Psychiatry.

Loneliness and social isolation
A 2022 systematic review of 24 studies found mixed results. Among adults, studies examining social isolation associated pet ownership with lower isolation, while findings on loneliness were inconsistent before the pandemic and more often suggested a possible contribution to lower loneliness during it. Most studies did not clearly distinguish cats from dogs or other pets, so these findings should not be treated as proof of a cat-specific effect. Schizophrenia-related disorders and psychotic-like experiences
A 2024 review screened 1,915 records and included 17 studies of broadly defined cat exposure. In 10 studies reporting unadjusted odds ratios, the pooled association with schizophrenia-related outcomes was OR 2.14 (95% CI 1.29–3.55); excluding one outlier study, it was OR 1.56 (95% CI 1.27–1.92) across nine studies. In five studies reporting adjusted estimates, the pooled OR was 2.44 (95% CI 1.59–3.73); after excluding a study with suboptimal exposure or design features, it was OR 2.40 (95% CI 1.50–3.86) across four studies.

These figures describe associations in the included studies, not an individual’s absolute risk. Exposure definitions were broad and included cat ownership, bites and contact; the review does not establish that living with a household cat causes schizophrenia. Evidence concerning psychotic-like experiences was mixed, and the authors called for higher-quality studies. As John J. A large UK longitudinal sample study published in September 2024 found no beneficial associations between living with a pet and measured mental-health outcomes during the pandemic. It examined pet ownership broadly, not cats alone, and reflects a particular period and study population; it is relevant counterevidence, not a universal conclusion about every cat owner or time period. Why findings differ
Results are easier to interpret when you check what each study actually measured and compared:
- Outcome: A diagnosed disorder, self-reported symptoms, loneliness, social isolation and general well-being are different measures.
- Exposure: Living with a cat, owning any pet, broad contact with cats and animal-assisted interaction are not interchangeable.
- Design and timing: Cross-sectional associations, longitudinal observations and pandemic-era studies answer different questions and offer different strengths of evidence.
- Population and circumstances: Age, living arrangements and social support may affect both pet ownership and mental health.
- Causation: An association does not establish whether pet ownership changed mental health, mental health influenced pet ownership, or other factors contributed to both.
What this means if you are considering a cat
It is reasonable to expect that a cat might become a valued companion, but the studies above do not support adopting one as a proven mental-health treatment. The decision should reflect whether you want and can care for a cat, not an expectation that ownership will reliably relieve symptoms. If you are dealing with depression, anxiety or another mental-health concern, these findings are not a substitute for professional care.
