Short answer: OpenAI says Dots keep credentials out of the model’s context for certain supported sign-in and saved-password flows. That protection does not cover passwords pasted into readable prompts or documents. Meta’s public Muse information does not provide a comparable technical account of password handling. The available documentation therefore cannot establish that either agent saw a particular person’s passwords during a week-long test—or support a fair security winner.
This distinction matters: product documentation describes intended behavior, not what happened in an undocumented personal trial or what an independent security audit would find.
What are Meta Muse and OpenAI Dots?
OpenAI Dots
OpenAI announced Dots on 29 September 2026 as always-on agents in ChatGPT, powered by GPT-6 Astra. The company says each Dot has its own cloud computer and can work with connected apps. OpenAI also says its plugin ecosystem connects to more than 4,000 apps, and that users can reach Dots through ChatGPT, Slack, or Teams. These are OpenAI’s product descriptions, not independent measures of performance. OpenAI’s Dots announcement

Can OpenAI Dots see your password?
OpenAI says that, for supported sign-ins, the model pauses while the user enters credentials into a secure form. The credentials go to the browser environment without entering the model’s context. For supported saved-password flows, OpenAI says a dedicated encrypted credential service supplies the password without passing it to the model. Those protections apply only to supported flows; a password included in a readable message or document may still be visible to the model. OpenAI’s security description
OpenAI also says changing a password is a sensitive step that must be handed back to the user. These statements describe the company’s system design. They do not establish that every login method is covered, that every credential stays out of model context, or that an independent audit has verified the claims.

What does the public information say about Muse passwords?
Meta’s cited Help Centre material describes Muse’s purpose, access and subscriptions, but does not provide a matching technical explanation of how Muse handles passwords. That is not evidence that Muse exposes passwords; it means the available material does not support a like-for-like comparison with OpenAI’s stated credential flows. Don’t assume Muse follows the same safeguards, and don’t rank the two agents’ credential security without directly comparable evidence.

Dots can review connected data and retain memories
OpenAI says a Dot can proactively review connected information and form memories even when the user has not asked a specific question. Disconnecting an app stops future access through that connection, but does not delete information the Dot already obtained. OpenAI says deleting the Dot deletes its saved memories and conversations. Actions and approvals have boundaries
OpenAI describes permission controls, Custom Rules, Activity View, Auto-review, and approval or handoff requirements for certain actions. It says proactive background research uses read-only tools and cannot directly send messages, change connected-app content, or control a browser or desktop. Follow-up actions remain subject to the usual rules and checks. OpenAI warns that Dots can make mistakes and says consequential work should be reviewed. These safeguards are company-described controls, not a guarantee against mistakes or unintended actions. OpenAI’s security description
Reported Muse incidents deserve careful attribution
A 9 October 2026 report describes cases in which Muse reportedly accepted a Marketplace offer and disclosed a home address, alongside other reported security and permission concerns. Those are attributed reports, not proof that a particular user experienced the same behavior or that every version behaves identically. The same report said it found no independent testing of Dots as of 2 October 2026; that is a dated observation, not proof that no testing exists now. Tech Policy Press, 9 October 2026

What to check before connecting accounts
- Confirm the exact sign-in flow. For Dots, check whether the login method is one OpenAI describes as supported. Enter credentials only in the intended secure form; do not paste them into a prompt or a readable document.
- Review what access a connection grants. Identify the connected apps and data the agent can reach, and distinguish read-only research from actions that can change or send information.
- Set controls before starting work. Review available permissions, Custom Rules, Activity View and Auto-review settings. Treat approval prompts and user handoffs as meaningful boundaries.
- Check retention and removal options. For Dots, disconnecting an app stops future access but does not delete information already obtained; OpenAI says deleting the Dot removes its saved memories and conversations.
- Review consequential results. An agent’s access controls do not make its output infallible. Verify important changes or decisions yourself.
What can a week-long password test establish?
A useful firsthand comparison would need a dated record of the setup, accounts connected, exact login flows used, information typed or shared, actions taken by each agent, and what the tester observed. Without that record, a headline claiming a week-long trial cannot be treated as verified evidence. Even a documented personal test would show what happened in that setup—not establish that every account, login path, or product version behaves the same way.
For now, the defensible comparison is limited to documented behavior: OpenAI describes protections for certain Dots credential flows and specific action boundaries; the cited Meta material does not offer equivalent password-flow detail. Neither claim alone proves what happened in an individual trial.
