Yes, in a limited, qualified sense. Meta says details you share with Meta AI, along with context from a conversation, can help personalize replies. It also says AI interactions may inform content and ad recommendations in most regions. That supports the conclusion that Meta’s systems can use conversational signals—such as an expressed interest in hiking—but it does not show that every inference is accurate or that Meta AI can freely read all your other chats.
What Meta AI can infer—and what that means
An inference is not necessarily a fact you stated outright. If you tell Meta AI that you prefer vegan meals, that is information you explicitly supplied. If you discuss hiking, Meta may treat the conversation as a signal that you are interested in hiking, even if you never say, “I like hiking.” Meta says it may use details from chats and context, as well as information people chose to share on Meta products, to make responses more relevant. Meta’s September 2023 privacy explanation describes chat information being retained and used to personalize responses; its October 2025 announcement gives hiking as an example of an interest signal.
Those examples describe intended personalization, not proof that an inference is correct. Meta’s public statements do not establish that Meta AI can reliably infer arbitrary personal facts, identify private facts about everyone mentioned in a conversation, or access conversations outside the interaction available to it.
Can a chat change the ads or posts you see?
Meta said that, beginning December 16, 2025, it would use interactions with its AI features to personalize content and ad recommendations in most regions. The hiking example illustrates how a conversation may be treated as an interest signal, much like engaging with a hiking-related Page or post. Meta also says discussions of certain sensitive topics are not used to show ads: religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs, and trade union membership. These are Meta’s stated policies; they are not an independent audit of how recommendations are implemented. Meta’s announcement describes the timing and stated scope.

Meta reported in that October 2025 announcement that more than 1 billion people used Meta AI monthly. That is a reported usage figure, not a measure of how often personal inferences are made or how accurate they are.
Does Meta AI remember what you tell it?
Meta distinguishes between using chat information to personalize a response and using interactions for other purposes, including improving products. In January 2025, Meta described a memory feature for certain one-to-one WhatsApp and Messenger conversations: it could remember selected details for later personalization, and users could delete memories. The announcement did not describe group chats as part of that memory feature, and its availability and scope were those of the rollout at that time. Meta’s memory announcement provides those details.

Memory, recommendations, and model training are separate uses. Meta says it uses information shared with AI features to improve products and for other purposes. It also says private messages between friends and family are not used to train its AIs unless someone chooses to share those messages with an AI feature. In a separate announcement about Europe, Meta said it would use EU users’ AI interactions and adults’ public posts and comments to train and improve models, and that people could object to use of public data. That statement is regional and dated, and should not be generalized to all users or all data. Meta’s Europe announcement explains that scope.
Can Meta AI read other messages in a group chat?
In a September 2023 explanation, Meta said that when users invoked Meta AI in WhatsApp, Instagram, or Messenger group chats, the assistant read messages that invoked “@Meta AI” or replies invoking it, rather than other messages in the chat. Because that is a dated explanation, it should not be treated as a guarantee of the current behavior of every product or feature. Meta’s explanation sets out the rule it described at that time.

How account links and controls affect personalization
Meta says that accounts in the same Accounts Center may have information, including AI interactions, used across Meta Company Products. It gives an unlinked WhatsApp account as an example of AI interactions that will not personalize experiences across other accounts. Meta also points users to Ads Preferences and feed controls for adjusting ads and content recommendations. Meta’s recommendation announcement describes account linking and those controls.
