Sometimes—but it depends on what “lost” means. You may be able to restore access to a wallet or make an NFT visible again. If a transfer from a self-custodial wallet has already completed, however, a wallet provider or marketplace generally cannot reverse it or return the token. A marketplace may restrict a reported item on its own service, but that does not freeze the token on the blockchain.
First determine what is actually missing
An NFT can appear to be lost for four different reasons: you cannot access the wallet, the wallet app does not show the NFT, the token has been transferred to another address, or the artwork or metadata link is unavailable. Those problems have different remedies.
- Check the wallet address and network. Use the relevant blockchain explorer to inspect the address and its transaction history. Do not share your recovery phrase or private key with anyone offering to check it for you.
- Look for the token and any transfer. Confirm the NFT’s contract address and token ID, then check whether the address still owns it or a transfer transaction moved it. A completed transfer is different from a display problem.
- Check the wallet interface. If the address still owns the NFT, it may simply be hidden or not indexed in the app. MetaMask explains how to display an NFT by importing it with the correct contract address and token ID in its NFT viewing and management guide.
MetaMask’s cited guide supports displaying ERC-721 and ERC-1155 NFTs; it says sending is supported only for ERC-721. A display option should not be mistaken for proof that a transfer can be undone.

What can be recovered in each scenario?

If you lost access to the wallet
You still have the recovery phrase
For a self-custodial wallet that uses a Secret Recovery Phrase, restoring the wallet on a new device may restore access to the addresses and assets associated with that phrase. Follow the wallet provider’s official recovery instructions, and enter the phrase only in the genuine wallet setup or recovery flow—not into a website, chat, or form sent by a stranger.

MetaMask says it cannot recover a lost Secret Recovery Phrase. Its current onboarding options can vary, including configurations that link a Google or Apple account, so use the recovery method actually configured for your wallet. MetaMask’s basic security guidance explains its account-safety recommendations.
You do not have the recovery method
A wallet provider cannot supply a phrase it never controls. If neither the recovery phrase nor another supported recovery method is available, the provider may be unable to restore access. This is an access problem: it does not by itself show that an NFT has been transferred.

If the NFT no longer appears in your wallet
Start with the address and chain, not the wallet’s gallery. Check the NFT’s contract address and token ID on the relevant block explorer and review the address’s transactions. If the address still owns the token, use the wallet’s documented import or display process. MetaMask’s guide to viewing and managing NFTs describes manual import.

If the explorer shows a transfer to another address, importing the NFT into the old wallet interface will not bring it back. Preserve the transaction ID and token identifiers if you need to report suspected theft.

If your wallet was compromised
Prioritize protecting assets that have not been moved. MetaMask’s guidance for unauthorized transactions and scams recommends creating a fresh wallet on a clean device or browser profile, protecting its recovery phrase, and ceasing use of the compromised wallet and addresses tied to its exposed phrase.
- Move remaining assets to the new wallet only when it is safe to do so.
- If a sweeper script may be monitoring the compromised wallet, do not send ETH or other tokens there just to pay gas: the funds may be taken immediately.
- Do not reuse the exposed phrase for the replacement wallet, and do not give the new phrase to a support agent or recovery service.
- Keep transaction IDs and relevant wallet and NFT identifiers for reporting.
MetaMask states that transactions cannot be reversed and missing funds cannot be restored by its support team. Securing what remains is separate from recovering an NFT already transferred away.

If a stolen NFT was listed on OpenSea
OpenSea’s stolen-item policy, dated July 27, 2026, says a report must include a police report that identifies the wallet address, the item identifiers or links, and a statement that the items were stolen. After review, OpenSea may disable the items on OpenSea. The policy describes a standard restriction of up to 90 days unless law enforcement requests an extended hold. After re-enabling, the disputed-ownership tag may remain for up to 12 months, with possible earlier removal based on purchase history. These are OpenSea service restrictions, not an on-chain reversal. OpenSea says it cannot recover an NFT or funds transferred out of a wallet, and its controls cannot prevent transfers through another marketplace or direct blockchain interaction. If the NFT is listed elsewhere, use that platform’s official reporting process and do not assume a report there freezes the token on-chain.

If the artwork or metadata link is broken
The token and the image it points to are not necessarily stored in the same place. The Congressional Research Service’s report Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs), Report R47189 explains that NFT images and other underlying items are often hosted off-chain. If the file host or metadata endpoint becomes unavailable, the media may disappear even though the token’s on-chain record continues to indicate ownership.
That situation does not by itself mean the NFT was stolen. Whether the media can be restored depends on whether the project, host, or another party still has a working copy or a replacement link; an on-chain ownership record alone does not guarantee that the linked artwork is available.
Report suspected theft safely
- Preserve evidence. Record the wallet address, network, token contract, token ID, transaction ID, and relevant marketplace listing or item link.
- Use official channels. Report the incident through the marketplace’s own help center and follow local law-enforcement reporting procedures. OpenSea’s police-report requirement applies to its own stolen-item process, not automatically to every marketplace.
- Ignore unsolicited recovery offers. OpenSea says it will not ask for a seed phrase or for an ETH transfer to resolve a support issue. Treat messages requesting either as hostile. Its Web3 Security Guide covers common safety risks.
Legal remedies depend on the facts and jurisdiction. A report or law-enforcement inquiry does not guarantee that a particular NFT will be returned.

Prevent the next loss
- Keep recovery credentials private and store them securely; never enter them into a link sent in a direct message.
- Consider a hardware wallet as one security measure for assets you want to protect. It can help reduce some risks, but it cannot retrieve a token already transferred away.
- Use official wallet and marketplace support pages, and verify the address and transaction on the correct network before treating a missing NFT as stolen.
