A local AI can put the messages it thinks need attention in front of you, but one builder’s short experiment did not make Gmail safe to ignore. After about five days with a custom email client called Mira, Nimrod Aldea was still checking Gmail to see whether the AI had missed anything.
What Mira does—and what it does not replace
Aldea describes Mira as a custom, local AI email client built to act as an attention filter: read incoming messages and give him a concise bottom line about what matters or needs action. The goal was not to produce a polished summary of every email, but to help distinguish, for example, a school announcement that requires no response, a payment notice worth knowing about, and a meeting question from a boss that merits attention.
Gmail remains the underlying account in this setup. Aldea says Gmail handles spam and sorts mail into predetermined groups; Mira reads messages in those groups and tries to surface what deserves attention. It is therefore an additional layer over Gmail, not a replacement for the email service or its inbox.
Aldea contrasts Mira’s short action signal with Gemini’s fuller email summaries. That is his description of the difference, not an independent comparison of the tools.

Why he still opens Gmail
The workflow was a weekend build, and Aldea had used it for about five days when he wrote about it. He continued opening Gmail to check whether Mira had missed anything. That habit exposes the central challenge: an attention filter is useful only if its user trusts it not to hide something important, and this early experiment had not earned that trust yet.
The account does not report an accuracy rate, a miss rate, measured time savings, hardware requirements, or extended follow-up. Aldea names the local model as “Gemma4: e4b,” but gives no benchmark that would establish how reliably it handles other people’s inboxes or messages.

Where the human stays in control
Mira can prepare a draft, but Aldea says it does not send replies on its own. As he puts it, “The Send button is still mine, and will probably stay that way for a long time.” Keeping a person responsible for sending is a meaningful boundary: triage may influence what gets attention, while the consequential act of replying remains under the author’s control.
What Gmail integrations can do
Google describes the Gmail API as a RESTful interface for accessing Gmail mailboxes and sending mail. Its documented uses include reading mailbox content for extraction, indexing, or backup; sending messages programmatically; and organizing, filtering, or sorting mail. Gmail filters can match criteria such as sender, subject, or message size and trigger actions such as applying or removing labels or forwarding messages. Those capabilities make Gmail-based workflows possible, but they do not establish which API calls, permissions, or architecture Mira uses. The account of the project does not provide those implementation details.

A system that summarizes messages is not necessarily a system that can safely decide what you never need to see. Before allowing any filter to replace routine inbox checks, consider what it surfaces and what control remains with you:

- What it prioritizes: Does it flag messages requiring action, or merely summarize everything? A concise signal is useful only if it preserves the context you need to make a decision.
- How misses are handled: The account gives no measured evidence about missed important messages. Until an individual workflow has earned trust over time, keep a way to review the original inbox.
- Whether it can act: Mira is described as drafting without sending. Confirm whether a tool can send automatically before connecting it to an account or relying on its workflow.
- What human review remains: Aldea’s continued Gmail checks show that the person—not just the model—was still part of the safety net.
What this experiment establishes
Mira illustrates a plausible role for local AI: reduce the amount of email demanding immediate attention by presenting an action-oriented view. Aldea’s experience does not establish that local AI can reliably catch every important message, eliminate inbox checking, or replace Gmail. The lasting lesson is narrower: automation can change what you look at first, but confidence in what it leaves out takes more than a promising prototype and a few days of use.
