Classroom lighting affects how comfortably students see, how much daylight they receive and whether sunlight creates glare. But current evidence does not show that a particular lighting design reliably improves students’ grades or wellbeing. Schools should treat lighting as one part of a healthy learning environment, not as a shortcut to better outcomes.

How does classroom lighting affect student performance?

Lighting can support the visual demands of learning by making printed material, screens and classroom activities easier to see. Poorly managed light can also cause discomfort: direct sun or reflections may create glare, while uneven light can make some tasks harder. Those are practical reasons to assess classroom lighting, but they do not establish that changing it raises test scores.

The National Research Council’s 2006 assessment put the performance question plainly: “Because of inconsistent results and the small number of well-designed studies, there is insufficient evidence at this time to determine whether or not an association exists between daylighting and student performance.” Read the report’s assessment.

Why an often-cited daylight study is not proof of better grades

A 1999 analysis by Heschong-Mahone covered more than 21,000 students in more than 2,000 classrooms. Its early report described faster test-score progress among students in brighter classrooms. However, the National Research Council later noted that the study’s daylight code explained just 0.3 percent of the variance in its regression model. The reported association does not establish that daylight caused the score differences or that installing a brighter lighting system would reproduce them. The NRC discusses the analysis here.

Does daylight improve student achievement?

Daylight has useful design qualities: it can provide high light levels and good colour rendering. Its amount and direction change, however, and direct sunlight can produce glare. Daylight is therefore an opportunity to manage, not an achievement intervention with proven academic returns.

In its review of green-school evidence, the National Research Council described the daylight-performance findings as inconsistent and insufficient to determine whether an association exists. The committee’s broader treatment of healthy school environments likewise emphasizes assessing the environment as a whole rather than treating a single feature as a guaranteed route to improved learning. See the 2007 report.

Can circadian lighting improve student wellbeing?

The circadian system responds to light differently from the visual system. That makes timing, intensity and colour relevant considerations when designing lighting, but a plausible mechanism is not the same as demonstrated benefit for children. The National Academies’ review found that direct evidence on lighting’s circadian effects on children’s health was lacking in the evidence it assessed. Its findings should be read in the context of that review, rather than as a statement about every study published since.

CIBSE describes circadian lighting as tuneable lighting that changes colour and intensity, and discusses research into how such systems work in real settings and how they are controlled. That overview is not proof that a particular installation improves student health, wellbeing or performance. Read CIBSE’s February 2020 summary.

What does broader indoor-environment research tell us?

A 2021 systematic review included 21 publications on indoor environmental conditions and learning in higher education. It found that indoor environmental quality can contribute positively to learning quality and short-term academic performance, but it could not determine long-term academic effects. The review also found that conditions supporting performance vary with the task. Because it covers college and university settings and multiple indoor conditions—not lighting in isolation for school-age children—it cannot establish a lighting prescription for primary or secondary classrooms. See the review by Brink and colleagues.

How should schools assess lighting options?

Assess the complete room and control system against the work students do, rather than selecting a lamp or colour setting on the assumption that it will improve outcomes. Useful questions include:

Manage daylight with usable controls

Accessible blinds or other window treatments can help teachers manage excessive sunlight and glare while retaining access to daylight when conditions allow. The National Research Council’s recommendations treat daylight controls as part of a complete lighting assessment, rather than an optional add-on. See the NRC report.

Consider tuneable electric lighting cautiously

Tuneable-white LED fixtures are one possible way to adjust electric light’s colour and intensity. Their availability does not demonstrate that they improve student wellbeing or grades. If a school considers them, evaluate controls, visual comfort, energy use and maintenance alongside the specific, evidence-supported goal for the project; do not treat purchase as a guarantee of academic or health benefits.

Is there a universal brightness or colour-temperature setting?

The evidence summarized here does not validate a universal illuminance or colour-temperature prescription for improving student performance. A suitable design depends on room conditions, tasks, daylight, glare management and user controls. Schools should avoid presenting a single setting as a proven academic or wellbeing intervention.
