Yes. Infostealers can expose AI accounts by stealing saved credentials or browser sessions, and they can also target API keys and configuration files used by AI coding tools. Reports document these tactics, but they do not establish how often AI accounts are compromised across all providers. Protect sign-ins with unique passwords and phishing-resistant MFA or passkeys where available; treat API keys as secrets; and, if exposure is suspected, revoke sessions and rotate keys through the provider’s controls.
Why AI accounts and developer credentials are targets
AI access can be valuable to attackers for reasons beyond taking over a personal account. Stolen credentials or API keys may let someone use a service under another person’s identity, bypass usage limits, or access AI tools anonymously. Check Point Research’s AI Security Report 2025 describes stolen ChatGPT accounts, OpenAI API keys, and credentials for other large language model platforms being offered in criminal markets. It identifies credential stuffing, phishing, and infostealer infections as ways credentials are obtained.
That report documents attacker interest and examples; it does not measure the rate of AI-account compromise among users or providers. Microsoft’s Digital Defense Report 2026 likewise calls AI “both a tool and a target for attackers,” but its identity statistics are not specific to AI accounts.
What an infostealer can take
Passwords and browser sessions
An infostealer is malware designed to collect information from an infected device. That can include saved account credentials and browser session tokens. A stolen password may be tried on other services if it has been reused; a stolen session token can expose an account without the attacker needing to sign in in the usual way. Microsoft’s 2025 explanation of infostealers describes credential and session-token theft.

- LONG-LASTING INK: The high-quality ink works on both glossy and standard paper and provides up to 330 feet of coverage.
API keys and AI developer configuration
AI coding environments can store credentials or model-routing details in local configuration files. Google Threat Intelligence Group’s 2026 report describes infostealer commands targeting Cline’s secrets.json and Continue AI’s config.yaml. Those files can contain plaintext API keys and custom routing endpoints. This is evidence of targeted collection in observed activity, not proof that every AI tool stores secrets the same way.
An API key is different from an interactive account password: it may authorize programmatic access without a browser sign-in. Changing the account password therefore does not, by itself, replace an exposed API key.

How AI-themed malware lures work
A familiar AI name or logo on an installer, browser extension, advertisement, or download page does not establish that it is genuine. ESET’s H1 2024 threat report documented a fake Midjourney installer that delivered Vidar malware, as well as a malicious extension campaign using Sora and Gemini as lures. ESET recorded more than 4,000 attempts to install the malicious Rilide Stealer V4 extension since August 2023; that figure counts attempts observed in its telemetry, not successful infections or AI-account theft.
To reduce the chance of installing a fake, navigate directly to the provider’s verified website or its official app-store listing. Do not treat a search advertisement, an unfamiliar download page, or AI branding in an installer as proof of authenticity.

Which defenses address which risk?
| Control | What it helps address | What it does not resolve by itself |
|---|---|---|
| Unique password | Reduces the chance that a password stolen from another service will work through credential stuffing. | Does not invalidate a stolen browser session or an exposed API key. |
| Phishing-resistant MFA or passkey | Adds resistance to sign-in attacks that rely on a stolen password, when the AI provider supports the method. | Does not remove a session already stolen from a device or rotate programmatic keys. |
| API-key limits and rotation | Constrains or replaces a programmatic secret that may have been exposed. | Does not secure an interactive account sign-in or clean an infected device. |
| Endpoint protection and trusted downloads | Can help prevent or detect malware and reduce exposure to fake installers. | Does not guarantee that copied credentials, sessions, or keys are invalidated. |
Microsoft’s 2025 article says phishing-resistant MFA can stop over 99% of the identity-attack type it discusses, even when an attacker has the correct username and password. That figure is scoped to the described attack type; it is not a guarantee against every account, malware, session-theft, or API-key scenario. Provider support also varies, so check the sign-in and security options for your own account.
How to protect an AI account and its keys
- Use a unique password for each AI service. This limits the usefulness of credentials stolen from another site.
- Enable phishing-resistant MFA or a passkey if the provider offers it for your account. Confirm support with the provider rather than assuming every sign-in method works everywhere.
- Install AI apps, coding tools, and browser extensions only from the provider’s verified site or official app-store listing.
- Treat API keys and developer configuration files as secrets. Avoid storing keys in plaintext where feasible, and limit key privileges to what a tool needs.
- For organizational accounts, monitor unusual usage, restrict privileged access, and include AI tools and developer systems in endpoint and identity security processes.
What to do if an AI credential may be exposed
- Use the provider’s account controls to revoke active sessions. A password reset alone may not invalidate a session token that has already been copied.
- Change the account password to a new, unique one, and review the account’s sign-in and security settings.
- Revoke and rotate affected API keys. Create replacements only where needed, and apply the narrowest practical permissions.
- Review usage, billing, and access history in the provider’s own controls for activity you do not recognize.
- Address the device or developer environment that may have been infected. Endpoint cleanup can reduce continued theft, but it does not invalidate secrets already copied off the device.
Provider-specific menus and procedures differ and can change. Use the controls and instructions for the service and account type involved.
