Yes. You can use ChatGPT for commercial work, and OpenAI offers ChatGPT Business, a self-serve team workspace with centralized billing and administrator controls. Whether you should use it for a particular job depends on your employer’s policies, account setup, and data-handling requirements. Business is separate from personal ChatGPT workspaces, ChatGPT Enterprise, and the separately billed API platform.
Do you need ChatGPT Business to use ChatGPT for work?
Not necessarily. The key distinction is not simply “business use” versus “personal use”; it is which account and workspace you use, and whether that use complies with your organization’s policies. A company may provide a managed ChatGPT account, while a person may also have a separate personal workspace. A managed account is governed by the organization, so use it for work activity that should fall under company administration. Do not assume that signing in with a work address alone tells you which governance applies.
If your employer has not approved ChatGPT for the task or the information involved, check its policy or ask the responsible administrator before entering work material. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Business FAQ describes Business as a self-serve workspace plan for teams; a team subscription is not a substitute for an organization’s security, legal, or records-management decisions.
What ChatGPT Business includes, and what it costs
OpenAI’s 2026 FAQ lists two seat types and requires at least two paid seats. Prices below are USD per user and may vary by country and currency. Confirm the amount and terms shown for your location before purchasing.
#1 Best Overall
| Seat | Monthly billing | Annual billing | Usage noted by OpenAI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | USD $25 per user per month | USD $20 per user per month | Standard seat baseline; actual consumption depends on model and task. |
| Premium | USD $125 per user per month | USD $100 per user per month | Includes five times more usage than Standard and is not subject to a five-hour usage limit; actual consumption still depends on model and task. |
OpenAI’s FAQ says eligible usage beyond included limits may draw on workspace credits when flexible pricing and spend controls allow it. New paid seats are charged immediately on a prorated basis; seat reductions take effect at the start of the next billing cycle. Unused seats alone do not qualify for a refund after the workspace commits to the seat count for that billing cycle, subject to legal rights and approved exceptions. See the current Business FAQ for billing details.
The FAQ lists a maximum of 200 paid Standard and Premium seats per Business subscription starting August 24, 2026, for applicable workspaces. Workspaces created before that date retain their previous seat limit. Because this limit and prices can change, verify current terms before planning a rollout.

How Business data is handled
Training is excluded by default, but processing and retention still matter
OpenAI says business data—including inputs and outputs—from ChatGPT Business is not used to train or improve its models by default. It also says data is encrypted at rest with AES-256 and in transit with TLS 1.2 or higher. These are statements about training use and encryption, not a promise that data is never retained or processed. OpenAI says qualifying organizations can configure retention controls, and its Enterprise Privacy page says data can be opted in to improve services. Review the applicable settings, terms, and your company’s requirements rather than treating “not used for training by default” as a complete data-handling policy.
See OpenAI’s Business data privacy, security, and compliance information and Enterprise Privacy page for details. OpenAI also says it can execute a Data Processing Addendum with ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, and API customers in support of GDPR and other privacy laws. Certifications and regional data-residency options depend on plan eligibility and configuration; they should not be assumed to apply to every Business workspace.
Private chats are not automatically shared with teammates
OpenAI says each Business user has an individual chat history and chooses what to share. A user can share specific conversations through shared links, so review a conversation before sending its link. Business does not provide Enterprise’s workspace-wide control to disable shared links, and self-service data export is unavailable in Business. Read OpenAI’s guidance on data, sharing, and privacy in ChatGPT Business before relying on sharing or export controls.
Administrators may govern managed account data
Depending on setup and applicable law, an organization administrator may be able to access, export, audit, retain, or delete prompts, uploaded files, outputs, conversation history, shared content, and usage metadata. The organization may also restrict services and features. The specific access and controls depend on configuration and law; ask your administrator what applies to your workspace.
Personal and managed workspaces remain separate when you switch accounts: switching does not merge or move chats, files, or settings. For the account-boundary details, see How ChatGPT Business works.

Business, Enterprise, or API: which fits?
| Option | Best fit | Administration and data considerations | Billing and scale |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Business | A team seeking a self-serve, centrally billed ChatGPT workspace. | Includes roles, MFA, SAML SSO, and workspace settings. Business lacks a workspace-wide shared-link disable control and self-service data export. | At least two paid seats; the 2026 FAQ lists up to 200 paid seats for applicable workspaces. ChatGPT subscriptions do not include API usage. |
| ChatGPT Enterprise | A larger deployment or one needing additional contracted enterprise controls. | Includes Business features plus additional options such as custom role-based controls and SCIM; Enterprise can disable shared links workspace-wide. Additional retention and compliance controls depend on eligibility and configuration. | Assess when a deployment exceeds Business capacity or requires Enterprise controls; pricing is not stated in the cited plan material. |
| API platform | Developers integrating models into software or coded workflows. | Provides project controls, Admin API, and Audit Logs API. Qualifying customers may have API-specific data controls, including zero data retention. | Billed separately from ChatGPT Business; project usage and limits are managed separately. Business seats do not provide API credits or rate limits. |
These distinctions are based on OpenAI’s Business FAQ, business privacy information, and Business sharing guidance. They are product comparisons, not individualized legal or security advice.
Quick Recap

Practical checks before using ChatGPT for company work
- Confirm the account: identify whether you are in a managed organization workspace or a personal one, and use the company-managed account for work activity that should be governed by your organization.
- Check the policy: establish which work tasks and data types your employer permits, including whether prompts may contain confidential, personal, or regulated information.
- Ask about administration: find out what administrators can access, what retention settings apply, and which services or features are enabled.
- Review sharing and records needs: confirm whether shared links, export, retention, and audit controls meet the team’s requirements.
- Choose the right product: assess Business for a smaller centrally billed team, Enterprise for additional capacity or controls, and the API for software integration. Budget API use separately.
- Verify current terms: confirm prices, seat limits, eligible controls, and local availability in OpenAI’s current plan documentation before committing.
