Sometimes. A 65W charger can work with a laptop designed for a 150W adapter only if that laptop accepts the charger’s connector and USB Power Delivery (USB PD) profile. Even when it works, the 65W unit supplies far less power, so expect slower charging, a battery that drains during demanding tasks, or performance limits under load. Check your exact model’s manufacturer guidance before relying on a substitute. A USB-C plug alone does not prove the port will accept USB PD charging.

Why wattage is only one part of compatibility

A charger’s wattage describes the most power it can deliver. Whether a laptop can use that power depends on three things working together: the port, the charging protocol and the cable.

The port and connector

Many laptops use USB-C for charging, but not every USB-C port on a laptop is a charging input. Some are data-only, and some gaming laptops include a USB-C port that is certified to USB PD but is not intended as the main power input. Before assuming a 65W adapter will work, identify which port the original 150W adapter plugs into, and whether the manufacturer lists that port for charging.

The charging protocol and voltage profile

USB PD lets a charger and a device negotiate voltage and current. A 65W adapter advertises a set of output profiles, and the laptop must be able to request one that matches its needs. Some manufacturers use proprietary barrel connectors or require specific profiles, so a USB-C shape with a 65W label is not enough. Lenovo’s 65W USB-C Wall Adapter, for example, is documented with PD 3.0 and a 20V/3.25A output, which shows the kind of specification to compare against your laptop’s requirements.

The cable

The cable must also be suitable for the power level you are using. A cable that carries data well may not be rated for the current a given setup needs. Apple’s guidance covers USB-C and USB-C-to-MagSafe arrangements, so match the cable to the exact charging setup your Mac uses rather than swapping by connector shape.

What a lower-wattage charger does under load

A laptop does not draw a fixed amount of power. Its draw rises with processor and graphics load, and a charger that covers light use can fall short during gaming, video rendering or heavy multitasking. Three outcomes are common.

Slow charging or charging that stops

When the adapter cannot cover the system’s consumption, the battery charges slowly or not at all. Apple’s Mac charging guidance says a “Slow Charger” message appears when the delivered power is too low for the model.

Battery drain while plugged in

If the laptop uses more power than the adapter supplies, the battery makes up the difference. The laptop may stay plugged in and still lose charge during a demanding session.

Reduced performance

Some systems limit performance when power is insufficient. Lenovo’s Legion 5i documentation says the computer “may not operate at its full capacity” when the USB-C charger cannot supply enough power while the machine is operating.

What manufacturers say

Manufacturer guidance is the most reliable starting point because it is specific to the model. The following examples show how different companies frame the issue. They are not universal rules for every laptop.

Apple: any USB-C PD adapter may connect, but wattage matters

Apple’s support article “Use a power adapter with your Mac” states: “If your Mac uses USB-C to charge, you can charge your Mac with any USB-C power adapter or display, even if it provides higher or lower wattage than the adapter recommended for your Mac.” Apple also recommends at least the minimum wattage specified for the Mac for the best charging experience. Apple lists specific fast-charge adapter and cable combinations for certain models, so a lower-power adapter should not be assumed to enable fast charging.

Lenovo Legion 5i: a USB-C port that is not the primary input

The Legion 5i (16-inch, 10) guide describes a designated USB-C port that conforms to USB PD but is not designed as the primary power input. This is a reminder that a USB-C port on a laptop is not automatically a substitute for the main adapter.

Lenovo’s 45W adapter FAQ: system load decides

Lenovo’s 45W USB-C adapter FAQ says charging speed depends on system consumption. A system that draws more than 45W can charge slowly, and a 65W system may lose battery charge on a 45W adapter. The same FAQ says many systems rated 90W and above reject 45W input altogether. Lenovo’s product page describes certain compatible 65W systems that can run on a 45W unit, with the battery charging only when consumption falls below 45W. These figures come from Lenovo’s own products and are examples of how the math works, not thresholds that apply to every brand.

Lenovo’s battery guidance: the battery covers peaks

Lenovo’s battery FAQ notes that a lower-wattage adapter can leave the battery supplying supplemental power during peak CPU load. In practice, a short burst of heavy work may be fine, while sustained load on a weak adapter will drain the battery.

65W versus 150W at a glance

The table below sets out the points to compare. Where a value depends on your specific laptop, it is marked as not stated, and you should take it from the manufacturer’s documentation for your model.

How to decide before you plug in

  1. Find your laptop’s exact model number and open the manufacturer’s support page or manual for that model.
  2. Confirm which port the original adapter uses and whether that port is listed as a charging input.
  3. Check whether the laptop’s documentation names a USB PD requirement or a minimum wattage.
  4. Compare the 65W adapter’s output profiles with what the laptop needs, and confirm the cable is suitable for that power level.
  5. If the model’s documentation is silent or lists a higher minimum wattage, do not treat the 65W unit as a dependable replacement.
  6. If the substitute is compatible, test it during the workload you actually run and watch whether the battery charges, holds steady or drains.

For laptops that shipped with a 150W adapter, the original or a manufacturer-approved equivalent is the reliable choice for demanding work.

Warning signs that the substitute is not enough

  • A “Slow Charger” or similar low-power message appears on a Mac, or the operating system reports that the charger is not sufficient.
  • The battery percentage falls while the laptop is plugged in during normal work.
  • The laptop slows down, throttles its fans or drops performance when the workload is heavy.
  • The charger is recognized but charging stops or starts and stops repeatedly.
  • The laptop does not charge at all with a USB-C adapter that matches its stated port type.

If any of these appear, switch back to the original adapter and check the manufacturer’s guidance for your model before trying another substitute.

If you choose a 65W replacement

A 65W USB PD adapter can be a practical backup for light use on a laptop whose documentation lists USB PD charging at that level. Before buying, confirm the exact model, the port it supports and the output profiles the manufacturer lists. Buy only the adapter and cable your setup requires, and treat the product’s maximum rating as a ceiling rather than a guarantee that your laptop will draw that power.

Manufacturer pages were checked in October 2026. Support pages change, so confirm the current guidance for your model before you rely on it.
