Sometimes, but only if the charger’s manual allows it to power a load and its output matches the amplifier’s voltage and current needs. A charger’s advertised charging current alone does not show that it can run an amplifier reliably. For a home setup, a regulated DC power supply selected for the specific amp is the clearer option to evaluate.
When a battery charger can power a car amp
A charger may work if its manufacturer permits continuous load operation and it can maintain a suitable DC voltage while supplying the amplifier’s demand. Check the exact charger and amplifier manuals; there is no single rule that covers every charger or car amplifier.
For example, the Rockville RD1000.1 manual describes a 12-volt negative-ground system and instructs installers to check for 12–14.4 volts at the amplifier’s power wire. That range is specific to this model, not a universal voltage specification for car amps. See the Rockville RD1000.1 manual.
Check the charger and amplifier before connecting them
1. Confirm the voltage range
Find the amplifier’s required voltage in its manual, then confirm that the charger can provide a compatible output. Do not assume a charger is suitable because it is marketed for a 12-volt vehicle battery; the exact output and the amp’s permitted range matter.

2. Check continuous current capacity
The source must supply enough current for the amplifier at the volume and load you intend to use. A charger’s charging-current rating does not by itself establish that it can continuously power an amplifier. The manuals cited here do not support one current rating for all amps, so use the specific amplifier’s specifications and match the supply accordingly.
3. Verify that the charger permits powering a load
Some chargers are designed primarily to charge batteries and may use operating modes or output behavior that make direct load operation unsuitable. Read the charger’s manual for explicit permission and restrictions rather than guessing.
Inputs can also have different voltage requirements. The Crate TXB50 manual distinguishes a 12 V automotive-adapter input from a 15 V charger and warns against connecting its charger to the 12 V input. That is a model-specific warning about the TXB50, not a test of car amplifiers or a rule for every charger. See the Crate TXB50 manual.

A car amplifier typically needs a main positive supply, a negative ground and a remote turn-on signal. Follow the amplifier’s manual for the connection points, wire size and fuse rating. For the Rockville RD1000.1, the remote lead is required when using RCA inputs. The Orion HCCA manual specifies a +12 V remote turn-on lead and calls for a fuse close to the battery on the power wire. Use the fuse and wire specified for your amplifier, and place the fuse as directed. Do not improvise a connection or use an unfused power lead.

A regulated DC power supply sized for the amplifier is a more straightforward home-use option to consider. Compare the devices on these points:
- Load operation: Does the manufacturer permit continuous use as a power source, rather than battery charging only?
- Voltage: Does the output fit the exact amplifier’s stated range?
- Current: Can it supply the amplifier’s demand continuously at your intended use?
- Protection and connections: Do both manuals specify compatible protection and safe connection requirements?
The sources cited here do not establish a universal amperage recommendation, a particular suitable power-supply model or a charger ripple limit. Choose based on the manuals for your equipment; if the charger’s documentation does not clearly permit load operation, do not assume it is an appropriate substitute for a supply.
