Yes—most home routers can stay on continuously. NETGEAR says its routers are designed for continuous operation and do not need to be turned off when you are not using the internet. That is manufacturer guidance for NETGEAR products, not a guarantee for every model: check your router’s manual and your internet provider’s instructions for model-specific advice. The decision to switch it off matters most when you are away for a long time and do not need remote access or connected devices.
Should you turn off your router at night?
For ordinary overnight use, there is generally no need to power down a router that is operating normally. A nightly shutdown interrupts the connection, and any cameras, smart-home devices, or other services that rely on the internet will be unavailable until the router reconnects.
Turning off only Wi-Fi, where the router supports it, is different from powering down the whole router: wired connections and router functions may remain active. Router-specific schedules vary, so consult the device documentation before setting one.

A router uses electricity while it is on, but actual consumption depends on the model and its operating state. NETGEAR says the consumption of the listed routers on its power page does not exceed the power adapter’s rating. That rating is an upper bound, not a typical-use measurement, so it cannot by itself establish the router’s usual wattage or annual running cost. NETGEAR’s router power-consumption information does not provide one general figure for typical household use.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
For a precise estimate, look for consumption information for your exact model or measure its use with a suitable power meter. To calculate a cost from measured energy use, you also need your local electricity rate; an estimate based only on an adapter label would be misleading.
Can a router overheat if it runs all the time?
Warmth alone does not establish that a router is overheating. TP-Link notes that some products that communicate continuously or perform intensive processing can become warm, and recommends clear airflow, distance from heat sources, and use of the supplied power adapter. It does not set one temperature limit for all routers. Follow your model’s instructions if you are concerned about its temperature. TP-Link support guidance

Give the router room to ventilate
- Keep vents unobstructed; avoid enclosed router boxes or cramped shelves.
- Keep the unit away from direct sunlight, heaters, and other heat-generating equipment.
- Use the supplied adapter, or confirm the exact required specifications in the router’s manual before replacing a damaged or suspect one.
Some models have active cooling. For example, ASUS says the RT-AX89X has a built-in fan that starts when powered and adjusts to the environment and system temperature; ASUS recommends its Auto setting. That model-specific advice should not be applied to routers with different cooling designs. ASUS RT-AX89X fan guidance
TP-Link Japan’s guidance for the products covered on its page says the described warmth is not a fire danger, and advises cleaning dust around outlets to reduce tracking-fire risk. This is not a universal guarantee about every router or electrical installation. TP-Link Japan support guidance

Does a router need routine reboots?
Not necessarily. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish that every router needs a scheduled reboot. Some models do offer the option. ASUS documents a scheduled-restart feature on supported routers; its instructions estimate a restart at about one to three minutes, depending on the model, with the network disconnected during that time. If you enable it, schedule it for a period when nobody needs the connection. ASUS scheduled-restart instructions
For supported GL.iNet routers, documentation describes separate schedules to disable Wi-Fi bands or lower transmit power, as well as a reboot schedule. Disabling Wi-Fi or reducing transmit power is not the same as turning off the whole router, and either may affect device connectivity or coverage. The controls are model-dependent. What to check if the router keeps restarting
Repeated unexpected restarts are a troubleshooting issue, not a reason to assume that all routers should be routinely switched off. Check the likely causes in a practical order:

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Check ventilation. Move the router to an open, cool location and make sure vents are clear.
- Check scheduled settings. Look in the router’s app or administration interface for an enabled auto-reboot schedule.
- Check the power connection. Try a different outlet and make sure the router uses its supplied adapter. Replace an adapter only if it is damaged or suspect, and match the exact requirements specified for the model.
- Update firmware. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your model.
- Consider power interruptions. If restarts coincide with outages, NETGEAR suggests using a UPS. Select one based on the router’s power requirements and the runtime you need; no universal capacity fits every setup. NETGEAR router troubleshooting guidance
- Factory-reset only as a last resort. A reset clears the router’s configuration, so make sure you can restore your settings before proceeding.
TP-Link also lists unstable power, use of the wrong adapter, poor ventilation, outdated firmware, and an enabled auto-reboot schedule among possible causes of unexpected restarts. Consult the support page for your specific router when these checks do not resolve the problem. TP-Link troubleshooting guidance

Should you switch the router off when you go on vacation?
Choose based on whether the property needs an internet connection while you are away:
| Choice | Electricity | Cameras, smart devices, and remote access | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leave the router on | It continues to use electricity; the amount depends on the model and cannot be inferred from the adapter rating alone. | Remain available if they also have power and working internet service. | A home where you need remote access or internet-dependent devices to stay connected. |
| Turn the router off | Stops the router’s electricity use while it is off. | Internet-dependent devices and remote access will be unavailable through that connection. | A seasonal absence when the home has no devices or services that need internet access. |
NETGEAR says that for a seasonal absence with no internet-dependent IoT devices, switching off may save power, while leaving the router on is also an option. Consider what depends on the connection before deciding; the manufacturer does not prescribe one choice for every household. NETGEAR guidance on leaving a router on
Can you turn off Wi-Fi without turning off the router?
Some routers let you schedule the Wi-Fi radios separately, reduce transmit power, or reboot the entire router. These are distinct controls: turning off Wi-Fi may disconnect wireless devices even while the router remains powered, while a reboot temporarily disconnects the network. Whether any schedule is available depends on the router model and firmware. Check the manufacturer’s documentation and consider whether wired or wireless devices need to remain connected at the scheduled time.
