Yes. You can install and use multiple web browsers on the same device; installing another browser does not inherently replace the ones already there. Your operating system’s default browser is simply the one it normally opens when you click a web link in another app. You can still open any other installed browser yourself.
What does “default browser” mean?
The default browser is the app your device normally uses to open web links from other applications. It is a system setting, separate from the search engine chosen inside a browser. Making a different browser the default changes which app receives those links; it does not uninstall the other browsers. Mozilla Support explains the distinction, and Google says links open automatically in Chrome when Chrome is set as the default.
How to change the default browser on a computer
Menu labels can vary by operating-system version. If a path differs on your device, look in Settings for “Default apps” or “Default web browser.”

If some links still open elsewhere, check the relevant link and file associations, such as HTTP and HTTPS.
- Windows 10: Open Settings → Apps → Default apps → Web browser, then choose a browser.
- macOS: Open System Settings → Desktop & Dock → Default web browser. Older macOS Monterey versions use System Preferences → General.
- Linux: Choose a browser under Default Applications in GNOME or Default Applications in KDE System Settings.
These desktop steps are documented by Mozilla Support. Mobile installation and default-browser rules vary by operating system, version, and region; these desktop paths should not be assumed to apply to phones or tablets.

When is a second browser useful?
A second browser is optional, but it can help when you want to compare how a site behaves, use a browser-specific feature or extension, keep a separate browser for a workflow, or test a website in another browser. Consider which browsers support your devices and sites, which extensions or features you need, whether you want account syncing, and which browser should open links from other apps.
Could profiles or containers do the job instead?
If your goal is to separate work and personal activity, you may not need a second browser. The available options differ in what they keep apart:

- Microsoft Edge profiles: Separate personalized environments with their own settings, bookmarks, extensions, themes, and preferences. Microsoft’s profile documentation describes the feature.
- Firefox profiles: Separate profile data such as bookmarks, settings, and add-ons. Firefox Multi-Account Containers can separate cookies, logins, and site data within one profile. Mozilla says Firefox profiles are not currently supported on Android or iOS. See Mozilla’s profile guide and its Containers guide.
- Safari profiles on iPhone: Keep separate favorites, histories, tabs, and Tab Groups. Profiles created on iPhone can appear in Safari settings on other iPhone, iPad, or Mac devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Bookmarks and passwords in iCloud Keychain can be accessed from any profile, so profiles do not isolate every kind of data. See Apple’s Safari profile guide.
Choose based on the data you want separated, whether you want syncing, and whether the feature is available on your device. Profiles and containers are not interchangeable: for example, Edge profiles separate settings and extensions, while Firefox Containers focus on cookies, logins, and site data.
Windows S mode is an exception
On Windows 11 in S mode, Microsoft says Edge remains the default browser. You can use other browsers available in Microsoft Store, but installing a browser from outside the Store requires switching out of S mode. Microsoft warns that this switch is one-way. This restriction applies to S mode, not to all Windows PCs. Read Microsoft’s Windows 11 in S mode FAQ before making that change.

Does installing another browser make browsing safer?
Not by itself. Adding another browser does not establish that your browsing is safer. Security depends on the features you use and how the browser is configured. For example, Edge documents SmartScreen checks for known threats, tracking-prevention settings, and InPrivate behavior; those features are not guarantees that risk is eliminated.
